Police in Northeast Ohio Arrest Man Who Allegedly Menaced GOP US Rep. Max Miller on Interstate
Police in Rocky River said Feras S. Hamdan, 36, of Westlake, voluntarily turned himself in with counsel present and is awaiting an appearance in municipal court. A message was left with his lawyer seeking comment.
Miller, who is Jewish, called 911 while driving on Interstate 90 on his way to work Thursday. He reported that another driver was cutting him off, making profane hand gestures, showing a Palestinian flag and shouting death threats targeted at him and his 1-year-old daughter.
After an interview with police, Miller filed a complaint against Hamdan alleging aggravated menacing and sought a criminal protective order. Local police continue to investigate with assistance from the US Capitol Police, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the US Attorneys' office and the Rocky River prosecutor.
The Ohio Jewish Caucus praised Rocky River police and extended their thoughts to Miller and his family, noting the incident followed by just days the politically motivated shootings in Minnesota, which left two people dead and two others injured.
'Enough is enough,' the all-Democratic legislative alliance said in a statement. 'There is no place for this type of violence– whether it be political, antisemitic, or ideological– whatsoever. We believe we can solve our differences with humility, not hatred.'

Trump bought more than $100 million in bonds in office, disclosure shows
US President Donald Trump has bought more than $100 million in company, state and municipal bonds since taking office in January, his disclosures showed this week. The forms, posted online on Tuesday, show the billionaire Republican president made more than 600 financial purchases since January 21, the day after he was inaugurated for his second term in the White House. The August 12 filing from the US Office of Government Ethics does not list exact amounts for each purchase, only giving a broad range. They include corporate bonds from Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, and Wells Fargo, as well as Meta, Qualcomm, The Home Depot, T-Mobile USA and UnitedHealth Group. Other debt purchases include various bonds issued by cities, states, counties and school districts as well as gas districts, and other issuers. The holdings cover areas that could benefit from US policy shifts under his administration. Trump, a businessman-turned-politician, has said he has put his companies into a trust managed by his children. His annual disclosure form filed in June showed his income from various sources still ultimately accrues to the president - something that has opened him to accusations of conflicts of interest. The White House on Wednesday did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gold Hovers Near Three-week Lows before Jackson Hole Summit
Gold ticked up on Wednesday but hovered near three-week lows, as investors looked towards the minutes of the Federal Reserve's July meeting and the Jackson Hole symposium of central bankers this week for cues on further rate cuts. Spot gold was up 0.4% at $3,329.89 per ounce, as of 1140 GMT, after reaching its lowest level since August 1. US gold futures for December delivery rose 0.4% to $3,372.80. The US dollar index was steady after climbing to a more than one-week high earlier in the session, making gold more expensive for holders of other currencies. "Spot gold is likely to adhere to its sideways range until the Fed can resume its rate-cutting cycle, while the dollar's month-to-date resilience is also making it harder for it to embark higher," said Han Tan, chief market analyst at investment trading platform Reuters reported. Minutes of the Fed's July meeting, due later in the day, were anticipated to offer further insights into the central bank's economic outlook. "Markets will be looking out for further clues about the dissenting voices from the last FOMC meeting. Gold could even see a slight lift prior to Jackson Hole, should the FOMC minutes show that the dissenting voices at the previous Fed policy meeting were louder than envisioned," Tan said. Fed chair Jerome Powell is due to speak at the central bank's annual research conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday. Gold typically performs well when interest rates are low and during times of economic and geopolitical uncertainty. On the international front, US President Donald Trump ruled out deploying ground troops to Ukraine on Tuesday but suggested air support could be part of a deal to end Russia's war in the region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the White House talks were a "major step forward" towards ending the conflict and setting up a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump. Elsewhere, spot silver fell 0.6% to $37.13 per ounce, platinum gained 1.1% to $1,319.81 and palladium was down 0.4% at $1,111.17.

Israel-France Row Flares Over Macron's Move to Recognize Palestinian State
A row between Israel and France over Paris's plan to recognize a Palestinian state next month escalated to crisis level on Tuesday when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused President Emmanuel Macron of fomenting "antisemitism". The Elysee hit back, calling Netanyahu's allegation "abject" and "erroneous". "This is a time for seriousness and responsibility, not for conflation and manipulation," the French presidency added. Netanyahu's accusation was sent in a letter addressed to Macron, seen by AFP, which said that antisemitism had "surged" in France following the French president's announcement last month that he will recognize Palestinian statehood. Macron said France would formally recognize a Palestinian state during a UN meeting in September -- a move that at the time drew a swift rebuke from Israel. In his letter, Netanyahu said to Macron: "Your call for a Palestinian state pours fuel on this antisemitic fire. It is not diplomacy, it is appeasement. It rewards Hamas terror, hardens Hamas's refusal to free the hostages, emboldens those who menace French Jews and encourages the Jew-hatred now stalking your streets." By announcing the move to recognize statehood for Palestinians, France is set to join a list of nations that has grown since the start of the Gaza war nearly two years ago. France is among at least 145 of the 193 UN members that now recognize or plan to recognize a Palestinian state, according to an AFP tally. France has long advocated for the two-state solution. It has said its move to recognize a Palestinian state goes against Hamas, which rules Gaza and has excluded a two-state solution. In the West Bank, the Palestinian Authority's foreign ministry condemned Netanyahu's remarks, calling them "unjustified and hostile to peace". "The old record of confusing criticism of the Israeli occupation and its crimes or support for the Palestinian people's rights to freedom and independence with antisemitism... has become cracked and exposed, and no one is fooled," the ministry said. - Anti-Jewish violence 'intolerable' - In its response to Netanyahu's antisemitism allegation, the French presidency said that France "protects and will always protect its Jewish citizens". "Violence against the (French) Jewish community is intolerable," it added. "That is why, beyond criminal convictions, the president has systematically required all his governments since 2017 -- and even more so since the terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023 -- to show the strongest action against perpetrators of antisemitic acts," it said. Macron's office added that the allegation in Netanyahu's letter "will not go unanswered". Macron's minister for Europe, Benjamin Haddad, separately said that France has "no lessons to learn in the fight against antisemitism". The issue "which is poisoning our European societies" must not be "exploited", Haddad added. France is home to Europe's biggest Jewish community. Reported antisemitic acts in France surged from 436 in 2022 to 1,676 in 2023, before dipping to 1,570 last year, according to the interior ministry. Netanyahu on Tuesday also criticized Australia, which has similarly said it plans to recognize Palestinian statehood next month. The Israeli leader, on his office's official X account, called his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, a "weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia's Jews". The personal attack came amid a diplomatic spat between the two countries after the Australian government on Monday cancelled the visa of far-right Israeli politician Simcha Rothman. Hours later, Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said he had revoked the visas of Australia's representatives to the Palestinian Authority.
