Unemployed man charged with trafficking over six kg of drugs
PONTIAN: An unemployed man was charged in the Magistrate's Court here today with four counts of drug trafficking and possession in Taman Mutiara, Pontian, last month.
The accused, Lau Keat Lim, 35, only nodded to indicate understanding after the charges were read before Magistrate Arina Azmin Ahmad Marzuki. No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
For the first charge, Lau is accused of trafficking in approximately 6.4 kilogrammes of MDMA (3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine), under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
If convicted, he faces the death penalty or a maximum of 40 years' imprisonment and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane if the death penalty is not imposed.
The second charge involves possession of 20.04 grammes (gm) of methamphetamine, framed under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39A(1) of the same Act.
The offence carries a jail term of between two and five years, and not fewer than three and not more than nine strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
The third and fourth charges relate to possession of 5.66 gm of ketamine and 1.06 gm of methamphetamine, respectively. Both charges were made under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and are punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act.
If found guilty, the accused faces a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
All the offences were allegedly committed at a house in Taman Mutiara, Pontian, at around 6.10 pm on May 21.
Deputy public prosecutor Anis Sahira Rosley prosecuted, while the accused was unrepresented.
The court denied him bail and set Aug 5 this year for mention to obtain the chemistry report.

The charge is punishable under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960, which provides for a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nurameera Shahrul Azrin appeared for the prosecution while the accused was represented by lawyer Khaliq Mehtab Mohd Ishaq. During proceedings, Nurameera proposed bail of RM16,000 for both charges with one surety, along with the additional condition that the accused must not interfere with prosecution witnesses until the case concludes. However, Khaliq Mehtab appealed for a lower bail, citing that his client works as a delivery rider earning only RM1,300 per month, and has to support two young children aged two and three, as well as a sick mother.

Selangor cops bust Alstonia Gang in Klang Valley, seize RM5.11m worth of drugs, arrest nine
SHAH ALAM, June 6 — Police busted a drug trafficking syndicate known as the Alstonia Gang after arresting nine suspects, including a foreign woman, and seizing various types of drugs worth RM5.11 million in five separate raids around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor on Tuesday (June 3). Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said among those arrested were the gang leader, a local man working as an e-hailing driver and his foreign lover, who are believed to have been actively carrying out drug trafficking activities for the past eight months. He said that in the first raid on a house in Bukit Jalil at about 5.50 pm, they nabbed a man and a foreign woman and seized MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine) powder and juices suspected of containing drugs, each weighing 4,656 grammes and 3,000 millilitres. 'The second raid was conducted on a house in Semenyih and led to the arrest of a man and the seizure of powdery substances believed to be MDMA drugs weighing 230 grammes, followed by a third raid at 6.10 pm in Puchong where a male suspect was held and 966.10 grammes of ecstasy seized. 'At 10.30 pm, we conducted raid number four on a house in Kajang and arrested a man and seized 110 vape cartridges suspected of containing 2,880 grammes of drugs,' he told a media conference here today. Hussein said the suspect then led police to a house in Kajang, where they seized MDMA powder weighing 21,452 grammes, ketamine (4,722 grammes), ecstasy pills (641 grammes) and erimin 5 pills weighing an estimated 1,960 grammes.
