Cape gin crowned South Africa's best!
Whether you like yours shaken in a martini or mixed with a tonic, here in Cape Town, we have certainly enjoyed the fruits of the craft gin revolution. Take a look at the shelves of your favorite liquor store (Liquor City in Claremont is my go-to, and hard to beat) and you'll find dozens of options. From Karoo-inspired infusions to fynbos-forward flavor bombs, distillers are pushing boundaries each and every day.
But, with choice comes a dilemma: which of them is any good? Well, here's a good place to start.
At the recent 2025 World Drinks Awards, KWV walked away with two top honors in the gin category. KWV? The people who make brandy and wine? Yes, the very same.
At the awards KWV's XXO 20-Year-Old Brandy was also named the world's highest-scoring aged wine brandy. But let's keep our eyes on the juniper-infused prize, as it turns out that KWV's Master Distiller, Pieter de Bod, is a dab hand at gin too.
So much so that the KWV Imagin Classic London Dry Gin was crowned South Africa's best gin in the Classic category. Crafted in small batches, this citrus-bright, juniper-forward gin is as classic as you could hope for. It's no stranger to the podium, either: this is its sixth international gold in three years.
Not content with just one award, the Cruxland Black Winter Truffle Gin won the same for the Contemporary Style Gin category. This bold and earthy statement gin is made with Périgord truffles grown in South Africa. It's a modern favorite and an eight-time international gold medalist.
Both gins bagged 'Gold – Country Winner' titles.
"These awards reflect a brand that honors its history while continuously evolving," says Pieter de Bod. "It shows our ability to blend tradition with relevance - and create spirits that speak to both heritage and today's global palate."

Amid speculation both Max and Lauren's brother Oscar Branning will head to Walford, Jacqueline remained coy over the rumours. She commented: "I have seen the rumours. I feel like you would have to ask Ben [Wadey], I'd love it. They tell us nothing. I feel like they tell me nothing because if they tell me, I will tell the world by accident. "I know nothing. It's Max Branning. I'd love him back but he's super busy. We'll ask Ben, we'll beg Ben. Where is he?" It's then that the star revealed there were huge things to come on the show, with "exciting" plots unfolding around December time. Jacqueline revealed: "I'm a massive fan of the show. I am so excited for [what's happening], cut to 6 months time, where the show will be [in six months time]. It excites me. You don't know but we know, it's very exciting." Her co-star Kitty Castledine, who plays Lauren's cousin Penny Branning, also teased the big things ahead and promised the show would "keep getting better" from here. Responding about the scenes later this year, the actress spilled: "Yes, it's good. "You don't know." Adding the show was in a really good place, she told us: "It really is and it's only gonna keep getting better."

Lorraine Kelly's health battles over the years as ITV replacement gives update
Sian Welby stepped in to replace Lorraine whilst she recovers from surgery. Lorraine Kelly is currently absent from her ITV show after undergoing keyhole surgery. On Monday morning (May 5), viewers tuned in to find Lorraine had been replaced with This Morning 's Sian Welby. Welby told viewers that she felt "very lucky" to be hosting while Lorraine recovers from surgery. Sian said: "First though, before we get started obviously we want to wish Lorraine a speedy recovery." She added: "You might have seen her post over the weekend. She's been in hospital for an operation; I know she's planning to be back here as soon as she can." We take a look at the Scots star's health woes over the years... Preventative surgery Over the weekend, the 65-year-old revealed she had her ovaries removed during "preventative" keyhole surgery in a video taken from her hospital bed. Lorraine admitted she hasn't been feeling well for a while and will undergo the procedure following recent scans and tests. She said: 'I've not been feeling all that well for a little while. So I had some scans and tests and I have to have my ovaries and my tubes taken out. It's purely preventative. 'It's going to be with keyhole surgery, which is incredible. I've been very well looked after, and I'll see you really soon, and I'm going to be totally fine.' She shared the video to Instagram and thanked her surgeon Dr Raafat ahead of the operation. Shoulder surgery In 2023, Lorraine returned to her ITV sofa after the Christmas break where she revealed she had surgery on her shoulder. The Scots TV presenter spoke about her time off with Dr Hillary and said she spent the festive period recovering from keyhole surgery. She said: "I had the most quiet one ever, I did because I had a wee operation on my shoulder it's been annoying me for ages." As a picture of her in a sling flashed up on the screen, Lorraine added: "There I am celebrating Christmas! Thank you to professor Levi and his team because oh my goodness me, keyhole surgery is incredible! "They just had to remove some calcification and some bone and yeah, I'm doing my physio and I'm all fine, but we had a really quiet Christmas and New Year, Rosie and Steve looked after me." Horse riding accident Back in 2012, Lorraine had to undergo surgery after she fell off a horse and it stamped on her thigh. At the time of the accident, she told her followers: "Unfortunately the horse stamped on my thigh. As a result - deep wound and lots of blood. Was treated by fab paramedics in ambulance - then given an op under general anaesthetic at hospital." Following her surgery, she was left with a massive scar after the traumatic incident. She said: "After being rushed into A&E, I had emergency surgery on my leg for four hours. There was a lot of muscle and nerve damage but the surgeon managed to repair the wound and spent hours stitching it so he could avoid giving me a skin graft. "I had to have a blood transfusion as I lost about three pints of blood. At first, I couldn't face looking at my leg. There were hundreds of stitches and it was very swollen. For a year after the accident Lorraine had to attend physio therapy and has since been left with an eight-inch scar on her leg. Although left scarred, Lorraine said she was very lucky: "Doctors told me I was lucky as the cut missed the main artery by millimetres. If that had happened, I could have died."
