Orlando Pirates players step up as Bafana Bafana prepares for friendlies
WITH Mamelodi Sundowns players not being included in the current Bafana Bafana setup ahead of two friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique, it is not a secret that a lot of the weight to lead the side will be carried by Orlando Pirates' stars.
Bafana play Tanzania at Peter mokaba Stadium on Friday night, 7.30pm kick-off before taking on Mozambique at Loftus on Tuesday.
The positive news coming from Polokwane, where the national team set-up camp, is that they - Pirates players themselves, seem to understand the duty upon their shoulders quite well.
Bafana coach Hugo Broos himself made it all clear on Monday when he named Pirates defender and one of the Betway Premiership side's leaders, Nkosinathi Sibisi, as his stand-in skipper in the absence of Sundowns goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams.
Leading the defence for Bafana alongside Sibisi is expected to be the likes of Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Deano van Rooyen, who both played crucial roles getting Pirates to the semi-finals of the Caf Champions League.
'It's an honour to be selected for the Bafana Bafana squad. For me, I have been working hard to get this opportunity. You have to keep working hard, you'll never know when the opportunity will come. Now for us the focus is to get a chance in the two games and give my best,' said Van Rooyen.
'We had a good season at Orlando Pirates and a lot of our players gained a lot of experience of playing in the Caf Champions League. For us now it is a chance to help the country achieve good results in the next two games.'
Van Rooyen and Sibisi are indeed among the experienced members of the squad.
'Yes we have a younger squad but as the coach has said, there is no pressure on us. So we must just go out there and perform and be ourselves,' said van Rooyen.
Commenting on Sibisi's leadership, Van Rooyen said of the man who has captained him many times in the colours of the Buccaneers:
'He is someone who does not speak a lot but his work on the field speaks for itself. I think he is that kind of a leader. His experience on the field, I think will be good for us.'
What should make the Pirates players' leadership duty easy, is the fact that other squad members themselves seem to be in unison.
One such squad member is AmaZulu forward Tshepang Moremi, who believes everyone will have to seize the moment regardless of age or even seniority.
'Whether you are young or you are old, the important thing for us to understand is that it is our time,' said Moremi.
'This is my first callup and it was my first time meeting with the coach (Broos) yesterday (on Sunday). He told me that I have been working hard and so I deserve to be in this team and I must keep on working hard.
'He told me that whenever I play I must do my best because you never know who is watching. Moremi
'I am looking forward to keeping on improving and working hard. My main goal is to play in the Afcon and Fifa World Cup.
'It is very important to me to keep working hard and contribute to the team, either by scoring and assisting. Even in the upcoming two games, when I get a chance, I will try to either score or assist.'

PSL promotion/relegation play-off drama set to begin with Citizens still favourites
Interim Cape Town Ciy coach Diogo Peral has a handful of upcoming matches to save the club's elite status during the PSL promotion/relegation play-offs. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix The Motsepe Foundation Championship encountered an unexpected hurdle when newly crowned champions Durban City were momentarily denied their spot at the summit, due to an ongoing case involving the alleged improper registration of a player earlier in the season. This matter forced the PSL to delay City's title celebrations, as a guilty verdict would have carried major consequences that could have reshaped the league's final standings. However, the club was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing and the player in question, Saziso Magawana was confirmed to have been transferred and registered properly. With that chapter now closed, all attention now turns to the highly anticipated PSL promotional/relegation play-offs, set to start next Wednesday between Casric Stars and Orbit College in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga. Here, Obakeng Meletse takes a look at the three clubs involved, which also includes Cape Town City, and assesses their chances heading into the mini-tournament. Video Player is loading. Reflecting on their inconsistent run in the 2024/25 campaign, they'll be left ruing the many missed chances, especially after losing more than half of their matches this past season. The appointment of Diogo Peral, supported by assistants Roger de Sa and Lebogang Manyama, has not delivered the intended turnaround. A side that ended the 2023/24 season in a respectable fifth place, has now found themselves in a desperate battle to avoid losing their top-flight status. Still, there is reason for optimism. City picked up a valuable four points from their final two matches, which gave them hope all the way to the closing moments of the season. Peral and his team will aim to build on that late surge and carry some momentum into the play-offs. Their opening match of the mini-tournament is next week Saturday in Cape Town against Stars. Orbit College The Rustenburg-based club were massively improved this season. From a ninth-place finish in the 2023/24 campaign, to ending just five points behind eventual champions Durban City, their rise has been impressive. The College side will be eager to maintain the form that has turned them from mid-table competitors into serious contenders for the title and a place in the top flight. They'll face a tough test from City and a Stars sides they failed to beat in both encounters this season. There is very little margin for error, and they'll know that these chances don't come around often and this could be their best opportunity in years to secure a place in the Betway Premiership. Full list of players released by Kaizer Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs have announced the departure of three players in the past few days. Despite claiming the Nedbank Cup, Amakhosi have had a tough season, finishing ninth in the Betway Premiership. With Nasreddine Nabi desperate to change the club's fortunes, Chiefs are offloading players to make room as they look to sign quality players for next season. The players released are Sabelo Radebe, Njabulo Blom and Ranga Chivaviro. Other players such as George Matlou are rumoured to be on their way out while Fiarce Ntwari has attracted interest from other teams. On Wednesday, the club released Chivaviro after two seasons despite the striker showing good form early in the season. 'Kaizer Chiefs will not be extending striker Ranga Chivaviro's contract when it expires at the end of the month. 'The Limpopo-born attacker joined Amakhosi from Marumo Gallants in the 2023/24 season on a two-year deal. He scored nine goals and provided one assist in 45 official matches wearing Chiefs colours over two seasons.' We thank Ranga for his positive contribution to the team and wish him all the best in his future exploits,' the club said in a statement. With only Tashreeq Morris and Ashley Du Preez remaining as the club's main strikers, Kaizer Chiefs will look to boost their attacking options when the transfer window opens. Mamelodi Sundowns could be set to lose on of their best players ahead of next season, according to reports. Already players such as Sipho Mbule and Rivaldo Coetzee have been released by he club. This after Sundowns made decided against exercising the option to renew their contracts for a further year. According to their agent Mike Makaab, the club made no indication they would take up the option. This allowing the deadline to lapse for them to exercise that option. Now, another player that will see his contract expire at the end of the season is Khuliso Mudau. The player has been a mainstay for Sundowns over the years, even for Bafana Bafana. He is also expected to go to the FIFA Club World Cup with the Brazilians. But now according to reports from Nessma in Tunisia, Esperance are in advanced talks to sign him!
