Yahoo17-07-2025
We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2025 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 12 to June 23, with the official Emmy nominations announced Tuesday, July 15. Afterwards, final voting commences on August 18 and ends the night of August 27. The 77th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, September 14, and air live on CBS at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.
The State of the Race
The Outstanding Comedy Series nominations have been the most consistent among the main series categories, so it feels really easy to say that 'Abbott Elementary,' 'The Bear,' 'Hacks,' and 'Only Murders in the Building' are all set for their third or fourth nominations in the category. 'What We Do in the Shadows' also feels like a safe prediction, even though it was not nominated every season it was on, because it made the cut last year, and is in its last eligible year.

In terms of new contenders, Netflix has uncharacteristically entered this season with the most comedies, which could be seen as a good thing or a bad thing for the streaming service. The consensus is that romantic comedy 'Nobody Wants This' is a shoo-in for a nomination, as it has had a long runway of campaigning that includes some winter TV award wins, but it has been harder to parse whether voters preferred 'The Four Season' over 'The Residence,' or 'A Man on the Inside' over 'Running Point.' All the shows have run strong campaigns, to the point where an Emmy voter would have a different answer on which ones they're voting for any given day.
Apple TV+ has been more succinct. 'The Studio' is its big new comedy, and although people have questions about who the show is for outside of people who work in Hollywood, the Emmys are importantly voted on by people who work in Hollywood. 'Shrinking' also stands out as a strong candidate for a nomination, even though it did not receive one for Season 1, because it is one of the series that has leaned heavily into being shot in Los Angeles, even having voters come visit the set as part of its official For Your Consideration event. The devastating wildfires in January have really put that element into focus, as the influential Television Academy members that are going to all these shows' FYC events are largely LA-based creatives that want to keep more work inside the city.
Surprisingly, the big wild cards in the comedy race are HBO series. While 'Hacks' has helped the develop the identity of HBO Max as this hub for broader shows with an edge that comes from not having to worry about standards and practices as much, HBO proper has seen its comedies get darker and weirder in the past couple years. Ultimately, that has led to continued critical success, but on the Emmys front, voters have not been as welcoming to 'The Righteous Gemstones' or 'The Rehearsal,' which is a shame, because they are two contenders that have made their audiences laugh the hardest.
With this being the last season for 'The Righteous Gemstones,' and 'The Rehearsal' becoming a bigger hit that does not have to deal with comparisons to 'Jury Duty' this time around, there is a glimmer of hope that the Emmys will embrace both shows this year, or the small but adored 'Somebody Somewhere.' After all, this is the network that absolutely dominated this category with 'Veep' less than a decade ago.

Loni Anderson, of WKRP in Cincinnati Fame, Dead at 79

Loni Anderson, who turned heads as the office bombshell on the CBS sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, has died at the age of 79. Anderson passed away Sunday in Los Angeles after 'an acute prolonged illness,' her publicist Cheryl J. Kagan tells The Hollywood Reporter. More from TVLine Junior Edwards, Swamp People Star, Dies R.I.P., Ozzy Osbourne: Kelly Osbourne Pays Tribute to Her Rock Legend Dad ('I Lost the Best Friend I Ever Had') Chuck Mangione, Jazz Musician and King of the Hill Guest Star, Dead at 84 Born and raised in Minnesota, Anderson went to Hollywood and booked guest-star roles on S.W.A.T., Police Woman and Three's Company (where she actually auditioned for the role of Chrissy Snow, later played by Suzanne Somers). Her big break came in 1978, when she won the role of receptionist Jennifer Marlowe on CBS' WKRP in Cincinnati. Jennifer was beautiful, yes, but she had brains, too, using her sex appeal to her full advantage. WKRP in Cincinnati ran for four seasons and earned three Emmy nominations for best comedy series, but a number of time slot changes led to a steep drop in ratings, with CBS deciding to pull the plug in 1982. WKRP became a hit in syndication, though, with repeats earning big viewership throughout the '80s. Anderson herself earned a pair of Emmy nominations for her work on WKRP, and when it ended, she did more film work, including co-starring in 1983's Stroker Ace with Burt Reynolds, whom she later married. Anderson reprised her role as Jennifer in The New WKRP in Cincinnati, a revival that ran in syndication from 1991 to 1993. She also joined the cast of the NBC sitcom Nurses in 1993 and guest-starred on Melrose Place and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Loni Anderson, star of ‘WKRP in Cincinnati,' dies at 79

As a young woman, Anderson's fresh face, dimples and big, sparkling eyes epitomized the American beauty standards of her time. She got her start in acting on television shows in the mid-1970s. Her big break came in 1978 when she was cast as Jennifer Marlowe, a receptionist, on 'WKRP in Cincinnati.' Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Her role earned her three Golden Globe nominations as well as two Emmy Award nominations. She later appeared in two episodes of a sequel, 'The New WKRP in Cincinnati,' which aired from 1991 to 1993. Anderson's seemingly ditsy, bombshell character was anything but, and her performance as Jennifer showed that looks and smarts could go together. 'I was against being like a blonde window dressing person, so I made my feelings known,' she said on Australian television in 2017. 'And as we know, Jennifer was the smartest person in the room.' 'She just turned into a great groundbreaking kind of character for women to be glamorous and smart,' Anderson added. Advertisement Her trademark blond locks were not her natural hair color, and she initially had conflicted feelings about them. Anderson had been a brunette for most of her life, including during her early acting career, and worried that she would not be taken seriously as an actress if she dyed her hair. 'I was very much on the fence about it,' she said in the interview. She entered into a relationship with actor Burt Reynolds, who would become her third husband, in 1982 when they were filming 'Stroker Ace,' a comedy surrounding car racing. Anderson played a 'rather sweet, Marilyn Monroe-like turn as a virginal public relations woman' who was the love interest of Reynolds' character, according to The New York Times' review of the film. The couple married in 1988 and adopted a son, Quinton Reynolds. The union ended in 1993, in one of the most acrimonious splits Hollywood had seen, and one that would serve as tabloid filler for decades to come, with both Reynolds and Anderson jabbing at each other over the years in interviews. In 2015, the gossip website TMZ reported that Reynolds had finally paid off his settlement to Anderson. 'It was one of the longest and nastiest divorces in Hollywood history,' the website wrote. 'The truth is,' Reynolds wrote in a memoir released that same year, 'I never did like her.' The two seemed to have patched things up before Reynolds' death in 2018. 'We were friends first and friends last,' Anderson said in 2019. 'It's time to move on.' In 2008, Anderson married her fourth husband, musician Bob Flick, who was a founding member of the 1960s folk group the Brothers Four. Advertisement The pair had met more than four decades prior, as part of a fan photo opportunity for Flick's band on May 17, 1963. Exactly 45 years later, they cut into a wedding cake decorated with that first photo of them. In addition to Quinton Reynolds and Flick, Anderson is survived by her daughter, Deidra Hoffman, her stepson, Adam Flick, two granddaughters and two step-grandchildren. Over the decades, Anderson amassed more than 60 acting credits. In 1980, Anderson starred in the biographical drama and made-for-TV movie 'The Jayne Mansfield Story' about the actor of the same name opposite a young Arnold Schwarzenegger as Hungarian actor and bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay. She continued working well into her 70s. In 2023, she appeared in the Lifetime movie 'Ladies of the '80s: A Divas Christmas,' which follows five soap opera actresses who reunite to shoot a Christmas episode. Anderson remained true to her early television persona well into her later years, still donning a well-kept head of bleach-blond hair. At the premiere for the 2023 film, she reflected on acting in the 1970s and '80s versus in more recent times. Young actors in the 21st century could be 'chameleon-like,' she said, whereas in her generation, 'everybody had an image and you stuck with your image.' She added: 'We were kind of put into our image. Into our Loni-suit.' This article originally appeared in
