Wan Ahmad Farid named Malaysia's 17th Chief Justice, swearing in set for July 28
This followed an announcement by the Office of the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court in a statement released late yesterday.
Hailing from Kuala Terengganu, the 62-year-old jurist was appointed to the Court of Appeal on Nov 12 last year.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B Hons) from the University of West London, earned in 1985, and obtained a Certificate in Legal Practice (Hons) from Universiti Malaya in 1986. He began his legal career as an advocate and solicitor with Messrs Adnan & Wee in Kuala Terengganu, serving from 1987 to 2003.
Beyond his legal career, Wan Ahmad Farid has been active in public administration and politics. He served as political secretary to former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi from 2003 to 2008, before being appointed Deputy Home Minister from 2008 to 2009.
He returned to legal practice between 2011 and 2015 as a partner at Messrs Wan Farid & Surin in Kuala Lumpur.
Wan Ahmad Farid began his judicial career in 2015 as a Judicial Commissioner, serving in the High Courts of Shah Alam, Kuala Lumpur, and Kota Bharu until 2019.
He was then elevated to High Court Judge from 2019 to 2024, with postings in Kota Bharu, Shah Alam (Special Powers Division), and Kuala Lumpur (Special Powers Division 3).
In 2024, he played a key role in a landmark ruling involving a constitutional suit filed by lawyer Dr Syed Iskandar Syed Jaafar Al Mahdzar, which challenged the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in declaring a state of emergency.
In his judgment, Wan Ahmad Farid held that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's authority to declare an emergency under Article 150 of the Federal Constitution is a prerogative power that is non-justiciable and beyond the court's review.
Wan Ahmad Farid was also among the members of the panel of judges who heard a case involving a dispute over 263.272 acres of land dubbed 'Duta Enclave' involving Semantan Estate Sdn Bhd in the Federal Court. — Bernama

The appointment was made under Clause (1) of Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, with the King's consent, following the Prime Minister's advice and consultation with the Conference of Rulers. In addition, Federal Court Judge Datuk Abu Bakar Jais has been appointed the Court of Appeal president, while Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Azizah Nawawi will assume the role of Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, succeeding the outgoing judge. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : PKR's Taufiq Johari today urged all quarters to let the newly appointed judges carry out their duties without questioning their legitimacy. The Sungai Petani MP took aim at Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's detractors for playing up the end of Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat's term as chief justice as the 'mother of all judicial scandals'. 'I hope (the judicial appointments) bring to an end the cycle of politically motivated speculation and innuendo that cast unwarranted aspersions on the integrity of the judicial appointment process. 'Some even accused the prime minister of trying to place former attorney-general and current Federal Court judge Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh as the new chief justice. 'Now that that claim has been revealed to be false, the detractors will undoubtedly try a different tactic,' he said in a statement. Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh was appointed as the new chief justice, taking over the post from Tengku Maimun, who retired earlier this month. The office of the chief registrar said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had also consented to Abu Bakar Jais's appointment as president of the Court of Appeal, and Azizah Nawawi's appointment as chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak. Siti Kasim wins suit over unlawful arrest by Jawi officers
Siti Kasim was arrested during a 2016 raid at a transgender beauty pageant event. KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court here has ruled that the federal territories Islamic religious department (Jawi) and its officers unlawfully arrested and detained lawyer-activist Siti Kasim during a raid on a private fundraising dinner in 2016. Judge Su Tiang Joo said the court was satisfied that Siti had proven her case on a balance of probabilities. He affirmed that Siti had been present in her capacity as an assistant advocate when she was arrested at about 10.30pm on April 3, 2016, and held without basis until her release at about 2.30am the following day. Su said the religious officers involved had neither the lawful grounds to arrest Siti nor the authority to act on offences under the Penal Code. He awarded Siti RM160,000 in general and aggravated damages, along with RM100,000 in legal costs. Siti filed the civil suit against Jawi and the government in September 2019, claiming compensation for wrongful arrest and illegal detention. She contended that she suffered 'loss of freedom' for four hours after she was detained by the Jawi officers, as well as nervous shock, insult and mental anguish. She said she was only carrying out her duty as a lawyer during the raid, and insisted that she had not obstructed the officers from carrying out their duties. Siti was acquitted by the magistrates' court here on Aug 21, 2020, of a charge under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing Jawi officer Nor Jihan Saleh during the raid, which took place at a transgender beauty pageant event. Lawyer A Saha Deva represented Siti, while senior federal counsel Nur Irmawatie Daud appeared for the defendants.
