BET ‘monitoring' situation in Los Angeles ahead of Monday night award show
'BET remains committed to the safety of our guests and staff,' a spokesperson for BET told CNN in a statement. 'We are working closely with LAPD and monitoring the situation.'
Los Angeles has been the site of unrest over the weekend as protests broke out against recent immigration enforcement action in the city. President Donald Trump ordered National Guard troops to the region, against the wishes of both Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
The BET Awards are one of the network's biggest nights. Superstar rapper Kendrick Lamar leads nominees with ten nods, including album of the year for 'GNX' and video of the year for his viral hit, 'Not Like Us.'
Lamar is followed by the man he engaged in an epic hip-hop beef with, Drake, as well as fellow rappers Doechii, Future and GloRilla, who have six nominations each.
Comedic actor Kevin Hart is hosting.
The event is scheduled to take place at 5 p.m. PT at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, blocks away from several areas where protests have been taking place.

More than 200 leading photographersoffer images of hope to support global conservation
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Prints for Wildlife, the acclaimed fundraising initiative that unites many of the world's leading wildlife and nature photographers, will return on August 21, 2025, with a powerful new edition: Edition Hope. Since its launch in 2020, the initiative has raised more than $2.1 million for conservation projects, supporting frontline organizations across Africa and beyond. This year, the focus shifts to a pressing new challenge: the widespread withdrawal of funding for conservation programs, threatening hard-won progress in protecting biodiversity and the communities that depend on it. "In 2025, the crisis isn't a virus – it's a withdrawal of critical funding for wildlife and conservation," said Pie Aerts, co-founder of Prints for Wildlife. "Prints for Wildlife is more than a fundraiser – it's a platform for connection, consciousness, and hope in a time of crisis." More than 200 renowned wildlife photographers have donated limited-edition works for the sale, including Joel Sartore, Suzi Eszterhas, Florian Ledoux, Michael Poliza, Gurcharan Roopra, Björn Persson, Vicki Jauron, and David Lloyd, alongside emerging voices from around the world. Each print will be available for $125, with all net proceeds going directly to Conservation International, a global non-profit working in more than 100 countries to restore forests, protect oceans, conserve biodiversity, and secure sustainable livelihoods. "We need to re-establish our frayed connection to nature in order to value and protect it. This is where imagery is so powerful," said Dr. M. Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation International. "These stunning, unique prints from world-renowned and deeply committed photographers offer us a chance to bring nature into our homes, while contributing meaningfully to its protection for the benefit of all life on our planet." The fundraiser runs for one month only, closing on September 21, 2025. Image 1 of 4 Image 2 of 4 Image 3 of 4 Image 4 of 4 The photographic prints featured in this year's sale are nothing short of epic. They demonstrate the very best of wildlife photography, from all corners of the globe. What sets Prints for Wildlife apart is the sense of community it creates; hundreds of photographers unite under a single cause, and thousands of supporters contribute through the simple yet profound act of purchasing an image. There's something especially powerful about buying a print of the very wildlife and ecosystems that the sale helps to protect. The initiative is also a reminder of photography's ability to do more than document, but inspire, connect, and drive tangible change. In an era when conservation faces mounting threats, Edition Hope offers a way for people to act, collectively, through the power of images. Find out more on the official Prints for Wildlife website. Metallica's Lars Ulrich salutes one of the greatest live albums ever, a record he says he's listened to "about 18,000 times"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Metallica's Lars Ulrich has recorded a video saluting the timeless majesty of Deep Purple's Made In Japan album, a record he describes as "the best hard rock live album ever". Recorded over three nights on the English band's first Japanese tour - two shows at Osaka's Festival Hall (August 15 and 16, 1972) and one night at Tokyo's famous Budokan venue (August 17, 1972) - Made in Japan was originally released in the UK on December 22, 1972, and on March 3, 1973 in the US. On August 15, the 53rd anniversary of their first Osaka concert, Deep Purple released a 50th anniversary edition of the classic album, remixed by Stephen Wilson. And Lars Ulrich reckons it's well worth your time, as he explains in a video uploaded yesterday (August 19) to Deep Purple's official YouTube channel. "Hey, everyone, Lars here," the drummer says by way of an introduction. "I just wanna take a brief second and say... 53 years ago, this very weekend, Deep Purple were in Japan for the very first time, and those three concerts were recorded - two nights in Osaka, one night in Tokyo were recorded - and eventually became the Made In Japan album, in my humble opinion, hands down the best hard rock live album ever. "I have heard it just about 18,000 times, and every time I hear it, it just gets better and better and better, and it's so crazy cool. It's so lively, it's so energetic and just, Duuuurrrghhh! You know what I mean? You know what I mean? "Now, there is a reissue, remaster, all that 're' stuff, version of the album that includes — let me get this right — all three nights of the three concerts," he continues. "So not just one version of each of the songs, but three different versions of each of the songs. And it's coming out right now and it's got, obviously, everything else, depending on what package you get. It's got the kitchen sink, and more of the kitchen sink, and a bigger kitchen sink and all that stuff in it."But just going back to the music, the crazy thing about hearing this, and like I said, I've heard it a lot, is that when you hear the three nights of the three different concerts, the versions of the songs, they're all fucking so crazy cool, but they're different from each other. So, like, one night Child In Time is this long, and the other night Child In Time is that long and the third night Child In Time is that long, because the solo is a different length, [Ritchie] Blackmore is in a different mood, Ian Paice is playing against him in this kind of way, and it sets up these vibes. And then Ian Gillan goes over here, and then Roger Glover's holding this down, and Jon Lord goes here on the keyboards and over there, and it's all sso crazy fucking cool." The drummer finishes up his tribute by saying, "So maybe this is the longest video honouring and saluting this great piece of work. I promise you I'll shut the fuck up now. But Made In Japan, people, Made In Japan, Made In Motherfucking Japan is coming out again as a reissue and all that good stuff. Check it out. Just check it out. Maybe you've already heard it 9,000 times. Maybe you've never heard it. Wherever you fall, just check it the fuck out, 'cause in terms of live hard rock and roll, this is as good as it gets. Thank you for listening to this babble. Lars saying over and out." Watch the video below: Reviewing the new edition of the album, which he awards 10/10, Classic Rock's Neil Jeffries writes, "Incredibly, [Stephen] Wilson has revealed subtleties hidden for more than 50 years. And with the source sets from all three nights newly remixed by Richard Digby Smith, this is Made In Japan not only expanded, but also supercharged. No edits, no overdubs, just the real deal."
