Tang Jie-Ee Wei break Japan Open curse to reach semi-finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei finally broke their quarter-final jinx at the Japan Open with a commanding performance to reach the mixed doubles semi-finals on Friday.
The world No. 4 made light work of Japan's Yuichi Shimogami-Sayaka Hobara, winning 21-14, 21-12 in just 32 minutes at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
It marks Tang Jie-Ee Wei's fourth World Tour semi-final of the season, having previously made the last four at the Malaysia Open, India Open and Indonesia Open.
Malaysian fans will now turn their attention to world No. 6 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai, who are bidding to make it an all-Malaysian semi-final.
The husband-and-wife pair will face defending champions and world No. 2 Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin of China later today.
Should they pull off an upset, Malaysia will be assured of a place in the final, boosting hopes of ending the nation's mixed doubles title drought at the Japan Open since Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying triumphed in 2012.

Badminton - Shi, Wang triumph in all-Chinese China Open finals as host dominates home tournament with four titles

China's Shi Yuqi celebrates after defeating compatriot Wang Zhengxing in the men's singles final at the China Open badminton tournament in Changzhou, in China's eastern Jiangsu province on July 27, 2025. -- Photo by AFP BEIJING (Reuters): Shi Yuqi and Wang Zhiyi lifted the men's and women's titles at the China Open on Sunday (July 27), prevailing in the all-Chinese finals to cap a golden week in Changzhou. It was another strong showing for world number three Shi following his Japan Open title last week. The 29-year-old came back from a game down to beat Wang Zhengxing 14-21 21-14 21-15 in little more than an hour. Wang had a narrow 7-5 lead early in the second game, but Shi took over from there, dominating the rallies and never trailing again. It was Shi's third Super 1000 title of the year after winning the Malaysia Open and the All England Open. In the women's final, defending champion Wang Zhiyi secured a dominant 21-8 21-13 win over Han Yue, who had advanced after South Korea's reigning Olympic champion An Se-young retired injured in the semi-finals. The 24-year-old world number two ended a frustrating run of three straight Super 1000 final defeats this year, all to world number one An. It was Wang's second title of the year, adding to her Malaysia Masters win, where she also beat Han in the final. Wang surged to a 13-4 lead in the opener and though Han tried to claw back in the second game, narrowing the gap to 17-13, Wang's sharp movement and relentless aggression helped her close out the match in just over half an hour. China's supremacy on home soil could not be questioned as foreign players fell at the semi-final stage in all formats except for the men's doubles, which was won by Indonesians Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri. The pair beat Malaysian second seeded duo Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi-Yik 21-15 21-14 and performed the viral "aura farming" Indonesian boat race dance in front of the Chinese crowd, much to their delight. It was the first time in a decade that an unseeded men's pair has won the China Open. In women's doubles, top seeds Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning overcame Zhang Shuxian and Jia Yifan 24-22 17-21 21-14. Top seeds Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping defeated second-seeded Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin 23-21 21-17 to clinch the mixed doubles title. Indonesian Scratch Pair Deny Aaron-Wooi Yik To Win 2025 China Open Title

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- Indonesian scratch pair Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Shohibul Fikri managed to defy all odds and beat national doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to win the 2025 China Open men's doubles title. World number two pair Aaron-Wooi Yik failed to match the synergy of the Indonesian pair and trailed 1-9 before losing 15-21 in the first game of their final match at the Olympic Sports Centre Gynmasium in Changzhou, China. Sensing a chance at victory, the Indonesians, who were put together only last week at the Japan Open, piled on the pressure in the second game, and confidently marched to a 21-14 victory against the Malaysians in 35 minutes.

Badminton: China make world ambition clear with four home titles in all-local finals

PETALING JAYA: China sent a warning to their rivals ahead of the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris by sweeping four titles in the home Open in all-local finals. Men's singles shuttler Shi Yuqi led the charge when he fought hard to beat surprise finalist Wang Zhengxing 14-21, 21-14, 21-15 in 64 minutes at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou on Saturday (July 26). World No. 2 Yuqi was the hot favourite against world No. 23 Zhengxing and duly proved his class and experience by capturing his first crown in the home Open and third World Tour Super 1000 title of the year after triumphing in the Malaysian Open and All-England. In the women's singles, world No. 2 Wang Zhiyi secured the title with a commanding 21-8, 21-13 victory over world No. 3 Han Yue in a one-sided final. Han Yue had made it into the title match after South Korea's world No. 1 An Se-young retired from their semi-final match while trailing 19-21, 6-11 due to a knee injury a day earlier. World No. 1 pairs Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning and Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping had earlier justified their top billings by claiming the women's doubles and mixed doubles titles respectively. Shengshu-Tan Ning overcame a stiff challenge from world No. 7 Jia Yifan-Zhang Shuxian, coming out on top 24-22, 17-21, 21-14 in a thrilling match which lasted 69 minutes. It was the duo's fourth title of the year after their wins in the Indonesian Open, Japan Open and Malaysian Masters and underlined their status as favourites for gold in the world meet. Yanzhe-Dongping also flexed their muscles by ousting world No. 2 Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin 23-21, 21-17, denying the latter back-to-back titles after their success in the Japan Open last week. Yanzhe-Dongping added to their victories this year in the Malaysian Masters and Thailand Open. China will now be in a confident mood ahead of the Paris showpiece with the pressure now firmly on their rivals in the world meet.
