Como defender prints CV on shirt to highlight post-career difficulties for female players

The Guardian12-05-2025

The former Italy defender Alia Guagni had her CV printed on the front of her kit for the final match of her career on Sunday before retiring from football, in an attempt to raise awareness of the uncertainty female players often face when seeking a job after their playing days are done.
The two-time winner of the Serie A women's footballer of the year award, and a Serie A champion with Fiorentina in 2017, says 'speaking up is the only right thing to do' to try to help other players, as she aims to shine a spotlight on the challenges female players face.
The 37-year-old, who won more than 100 caps for Italy, has spent the final campaign of her career with the top-flight Italian women's club Como. She is hanging up her boots and becoming a mother, and her unusual CV-jersey idea coincided with Mother's Day in Italy, 11 May.
'I've never been someone who seeks the spotlight,' she says. 'But there are times when speaking up is the only right thing to do – especially when it might help those who come next.
'I was fortunate to have a plan, but balancing preparation for the future with the demands of professional sport is never simple. A career on the pitch has a natural end. Ensuring there's a beginning after that end should be part of the journey. Why not help the champions of tomorrow start building their futures today?'
The match on Sunday ended in a 3-1 victory against Napoli, with Guagni playing the first 52 minutes. Como Women, who say they hope the CV-jersey encourages conversations and opens doors for change for women's players, have vowed to only accept sponsors who commit to hiring their players once they have finished their sporting careers.

'They're in a bit of a hole' - France star reveals why he rejected Man Utd move

Adrien Rabiot says he has received multiple offers to join Manchester United in recent years, but was reluctant to move to Old Trafford given the club are 'in a bit of a hole at the moment'. The 30-year-old midfielder was heavily linked with the Red Devils back in 2023, when he was nearing the end of his contract with Serie A giants Juventus. But Rabiot agreed to a one-year extension in Turin later that summer and went on to make 35 appearances across the 2023/24 season, helping Juve win the Coppa Italia. Twelve months on, United again explored the prospect of capturing Rabiot on a free transfer, only for the France international to return to his homeland and sign for Marseille instead. It has proven to be a great fit for both parties, with Rabiot racking up nine goals and four assists in Ligue 1 as Marseille secured Champions League qualification with a runners-up finish behind Paris Saint-Germain. Reflecting on what could have been in a wide-ranging interview with The Athletic, Rabiot – who was named Marseille's player of the season – lifted the lid on just how close he came to playing for United. 'It really could have happened two years ago, when I was coming to the end of my contract at Juventus and I finally decided to extend by a year,' Rabiot explained. 'We had great talks and there were written offers. But in the end, it didn't happen. 'Last year as well, when I was free, they came back in again. I had good talks with them again. But it's true that it was a bit tricky. 'The situation they're in at the moment… I felt a bit of reticence about whether United were going to be able to go on and achieve great things. Because they're in a bit of a hole at the moment.' Rabiot now shares a dressing room at Marseille with Mason Greenwood, who left United in 2023 following an internal investigation into his conduct. The six-month investigation was launched after Greenwood was arrested in early 2022 following allegations surrounding material published online. Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour before prosecutors dropped the case against him in February 2023. 'Mason is an incredible player,' Rabiot said of the English forward. 'If he hadn't had all of his problems, I think he'd have an image like [Jude] Bellingham. Mason would be the star. 'He's an exceptional player. He can score with his right foot and his left foot, he has an exceptional shot, he can dribble. More Trending 'We're very lucky to have him. When he's really focused, he does really great things.' It was widely reported last month that Greenwood was attracting strong interest from the Premier League, with at least two unnamed top-flight clubs said to be mulling over a proposed bid for the attacker. Greenwood's current contract with Marseille runs through to the summer of 2029. Rabiot, meanwhile, has just 12 months remaining on his deal at the Stade Velodrome. Inter appoint Romanian Chivu as manager

June 9 (Reuters) - Inter Milan appointed Romanian Cristian Chivu as coach on Monday on a two-year deal in place of Simone Inzaghi who left the role following the Italian side's 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris St Germain. Former Inter defender Chivu, who left Parma less than four months in charge, played as a defender for Inter for seven years and was part of Jose Mourinho's treble-winning side in 2010. "In February 2025, Cristian was given his first opportunity to coach a senior side as Parma... He led the Emilians to safety, with the team picking up 16 points from 13 matches under his guidance," Inter said in a statement. "Now, Cristian Chivu is beginning the third chapter of his Nerazzurri story. And he's doing so with the values that have always guided him: dedication, sacrifice and a tireless work ethic." Inter begin their Club World Cup campaign against Mexico's Monterrey on June 17 in Los Angeles. Inzaghi, who left the club last week after four years as coach, has joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.
