The blue-chip Dow briefly hit a record high on Friday, as UnitedHealth's shares jumped after Berkshire Hathaway raised its stake in the health insurer, while investors assessed mixed data to gauge the Federal Reserve's monetary policy path this year.UnitedHealth Group gained 11.6% to hit a more than two-month high after Warren Buffett's company revealed a new investment in the health insurer, while Michael Burry's Scion Asset Management also turned more bullish on the company.Rising costs in the broader healthcare sector and an about 40% slump in heavyweight UnitedHealth's shares this year have left the Dow lagging its Wall Street peers on the road to record highs. The price-weighted index last scaled an all-time high on December 4.This week, however, the healthcare sector is the top performer on the S&P 500 and is on track for its best weekly performance since October 2022.Other insurance stocks Centene and Molina gained 5.2% each.A report showed retail sales in July rose as expected, but the University of Michigan's index tracking consumer confidence fell more than expected to 58 as inflation expectations rise."As long as consumer spending holds up and companies are able to retain workers because of that robust spending, the flywheel can continue to spin, pushing corporate profits and stock prices higher," said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Northlight Asset Management, speaking on the retail sales figures. At 10:11 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 99.11 points, or 0.22%, to 45,011.45, the S&P 500 lost 7.39 points, or 0.11%, to 6,461.15 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 30.70 points, or 0.14%, to 21,681.10.Wall Street's main U.S. stock indexes are on track for their second week of gains, buoyed by expectations that the Fed could restart its monetary policy easing cycle with a 25-basis-point interest rate cut in September. The central bank last lowered borrowing costs in December and said U.S. tariffs could add to price pressures. However, recent labor market weakness and signs that tariff-induced inflation was yet to reflect in headline consumer prices have made investors confident of a potential dovish move next month.Still, Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee said recent data reports showed a stagflationary impulse from tariffs on the economy. On the trade front, U.S. President Donald Trump said he would unveil tariffs on steel and semiconductors next week.Applied Materials tumbled 11.3% after the chip equipment maker issued weak fourth-quarter forecasts.Intel rose 3% after a report said the Trump administration was in talks for the U.S. government to potentially take a stake in the chipmaker.Attention was also on a meeting between Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that markets hope could pave the way for a resolution to the Ukraine conflict. The meeting will take place at 1900 GMT.Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.22-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and a 1.31-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq. The S&P 500 posted 8 new 52-week highs and no new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 52 new highs and 45 new lows.(Disclaimer: Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own. Air Canada strike: Worldwide services hit as 700 flights grounded; 10,000 attendants walk off

Travellers wait in line for the next available agent at the Air Canada counter in Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Dorval, Quebec. (Picture credit: AP) Air Canada has suspended all operations after more than 10,000 of its flight attendants walked off the job early Saturday, plunging peak summer travel into chaos and leaving passengers stranded around the world. The strike began shortly before 1 am EDT after a deadline to reach a new contract passed, Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) spokesman Hugh Pouliot confirmed, as per news agency AP. The airline announced soon after that it would halt flights entirely, strongly advising customers 'not to go to the airport' and expressing 'deep regret' over the disruption, reported news agency AFP. The complete shutdown is affecting Air Canada's full schedule of about 700 daily flights, impacting roughly 130,000 travellers per day, including an estimated 25,000 Canadians abroad. By Friday night, the airline had already cancelled 623 flights affecting more than 100,000 passengers, according to AFP. Contract talks break down Negotiations between Air Canada and CUPE have been ongoing for about eight months but remain deadlocked over pay and compensation for unpaid ground duties. The union has refused to enter government-directed arbitration, which would have removed its right to strike, saying it wants to bargain directly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'We're here to bargain a deal, not to go on strike,' Pouliot said in an email cited by AP, adding that Air Canada had not countered the union's last two proposals since Tuesday. Air Canada's latest offer included a 38% increase in total compensation over four years, which it said would make its flight attendants the best paid in Canada. A Thursday statement from the airline detailed that, under the proposal, a senior flight attendant would earn about C$87,000 by 2027. The union has rejected the offer, calling it 'below inflation and below market value'. CUPE is also seeking pay for ground duties such as boarding, which are currently uncompensated, a standard practice in the airline industry but one the union says is unfair. Rafael Gomez, director of the University of Toronto's Centre for Industrial Relations, was quoted by AFP as saying that while unpaid pre-flight work is common globally, CUPE has successfully framed it as an issue of fairness in the public eye. 'That's a very good issue to highlight,' he said, noting that any gains here could influence other carriers. Travellers left in limbo With planes grounded, travellers have been left scrambling. Montreal resident Alex Laroche, 21, said he and his girlfriend had saved since Christmas for an $8,000 European vacation — now at risk. 'At this point, it's just a waiting game,' Laroche said, as per AP. He initially resented the strike but changed his mind after learning about the wage dispute, saying, 'Their wage is barely livable.' Air Canada says passengers can request full refunds via its website or app, and it will attempt to rebook travellers on other carriers where possible. However, the airline warns that alternative flights are already full due to summer demand. Canada's federal jobs minister Patty Hajdu urged both sides to 'work harder' to resolve the dispute, calling it 'unacceptable that such little progress has been made'. The Business Council of Canada warned before the strike that halting Air Canada's passenger and cargo services could cause 'immediate and extensive harm' to the economy. Industry experts expect the stoppage to be short-lived. 'This is peak season,' Gomez said. 'The airline does not want to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue… They're almost playing chicken with the flight attendants'. Winklevoss twins' Gemini reveals lower revenue and wider loss in US IPO filing

AP Cameron Winklevoss, left, and Tyler Winklevoss, founders of Gemini Trust Co. (AP Photo/Richard Drew, File) Gemini's revenue fell and losses widened in the first half of 2025, the cryptocurrency exchange said in a U.S. IPO filing, joining a wave of digital-asset firms seeking to tap public markets. Terms of the offering were not disclosed in the filing, made public on Friday. The company reported a net loss of $282.5 million on a total revenue of $68.6 million in the six months ended June 30, compared with a net loss of $41.4 million on a revenue of $74.3 million year earlier. U.S. IPO activity has rebounded in recent months following a slowdown earlier this year caused by uncertainty over trade policy changes, with several new listings drawing strong investor demand. Digital asset companies have also featured prominently in the IPO market in recent months, including blockbuster debuts from stablecoin issuer Circle and cryptocurrency exchange Bullish. Bullish's debut on Wednesday made it the second listed cryptocurrency exchange in the country after Coinbase Global . Gemini will become the third public crypto exchange once it goes public. "The question for investors regarding Gemini revolves around the business mix and moat of trading versus custody, how they differentiate on trust and growth, and what they do that Coinbase can't copy by Tuesday," said Michael Ashley Schulman, partner and CIO at Running Point Capital. Gemini said it will use IPO proceeds for general corporate purposes and to repay all or part of its third-party debt. The exchange also supports stablecoins on its platform, a segment that has drawn attention following last month's signing of the GENIUS Act, a new U.S. law establishing a regulatory framework for stablecoins. Gemini issues the Gemini Dollar (GUSD), a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar. The company, which also supports more than 70 cryptocurrencies and operates in over 60 countries, confidentially filed for an IPO in June. Gemini, which was founded in 2014 by billionaire twins Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, plans to list on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol "GEMI." Goldman Sachs and Citigroup are acting as lead bookrunners. The Winklevoss twins rose to prominence after suing Facebook, and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg, alleging he stole their idea for the social network. They settled in 2008 for cash and Facebook stock. Regulatory boost Regulatory clarity under the Trump administration, rising institutional adoption, and increasing ETF inflows have bolstered investor confidence and helped integrate crypto into mainstream finance. In a watershed moment for the industry, Coinbase became the first blockchain-focused company to join the S&P 500 earlier this year. Block, which facilitates bitcoin purchases, joined the index in July. The shift marks a turnaround for an industry that spent more than a decade under heavy regulatory scrutiny worldwide. "We've seen a shift from speculation to sustainability. Institutional investors are looking for proof points - real clients, regulated products, and long-term market alignment. This is how the sector matures, and it will likely set the stage for other crypto firms keen to list their shares," said Nick Jones, founder of crypto firm Zumo. S&P Global Upgrades Credit Ratings On 10 Indian Financial Institutions

New Delhi: In yet another significant development, the S&P Global Ratings has upgraded long-term issuer credit ratings on seven Indian banks and three non-banking financial companies (NBFCs). The banks are State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Union Bank of India, Indian Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank and the NBFCs are Bajaj Finance, Tata Capital and L&T Finance. The ratings of the 10 financial institutions have been upgraded from 'BBB-/Positive/A-3' to 'BBB/Stable/A-2'. The action comes after the global ratings agency raised sovereign credit rating on India. This marks the country's first sovereign upgrade by S&P in 18 years, the previous one being in 2007 when India was elevated to investment grade at BBB-. In May 2024, the agency revised its outlook on India from 'Stable' to 'Positive'. India's financial institutions will continue to benefit from the country's strong economic growth momentum, according to S&P Global. It expects India's banks to maintain adequate asset quality, good profitability, and enhanced capitalisation over the next 12-24 months. This is despite some pockets of stress. Along with raising the long-term issuer credit ratings of the 10 aforementioned financial institutions, S&P Global Ratings also revised upward its assessment of the stand-alone credit profiles (SACP) of seven of these entities – SBI, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Union Bank of India, Indian Bank, Tata Capital and L&T Finance. The ratings on many Indian financial institutions are capped by our sovereign rating on India. This is due to the direct and indirect influence that the sovereign has on financial institutions operating in the country, S&P said. On Thursday, S&P Global Ratings had also raised credit ratings on Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd. (ONGC), Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd., NTPC Ltd., and Tata Power Co. Ltd. to 'BBB' from 'BBB-' with outlooks as stable.
