Sacked coach Simon Goodwin meets with GWS Giants about new job for 2026 season

7NEWS13 hours ago
Just eight days after he was sacked by Melbourne, Simon Goodwin is already looking ahead to his next move.
7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary has exclusive details of the meeting that is certain to keep the premiership coach in the AFL industry next year.
'Simon Goodwin has met with GWS over a role for next year,' Cleary said on 7NEWS.
'The link ... his wife is based in Sydney and Goodwin is expected to spend extended periods in the Harbour City.'
Goodwin's wife Kristine Brooks is a high-flyer in the Sydney finance world.
And the move makes sense, with both Sydney clubs having long spoken about the challenges in convincing big off-field names to the city.
'There's been a significant increase to the soft cap for football spending for 2026, so the Giants could afford it too,' Cleary said.
Meanwhile, Cleary said Collingwood legend and former coach Nathan Buckley was the raging favourite to replace Goodwin at the Demons.
And premiership hero Dale Thomas (who was coached by Buckley) backed his former mentor to do a great job with Melbourne.
Thomas said the situation Buckley would be walking into was not too similar to the situation he faced when took over Collingwood after Mick Malthouse.
'He certainly ... learnt some lessons in that first part of his year (as coach) ... it ended up being 10 years coaching Collingwood,' Thomas said on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters.
'If he comes in now and he gets his opportunity at Melbourne, he can go, 'Right, this is what we're going to look like from the top down.'.
'There's still enough pieces of that puzzle that I think he (Buckley) can have a real impact.
'If (the Dees) do go and get him, I think he'll be a great fit.'

Ex-girlfriend seemingly rips Bailey Smith to shreds: ‘Good riddance'

The ex-girlfriend of Bailey Smith has seemingly torn the AFL superstar apart with a stinging rant on her podcast. Content creator Izzy Armitage didn't use Smith's name, but suggested that the 24-year-old heart-throb cheated on while in Adelaide for a football game, and that he had put her 'through the f****** wringer 100 times over'. 7NEWS is not suggesting any of the accusations are true, merely this is what Armitage said on her podcast Hear Me Out. Armitage opening up on her past relationship comes just days after Smith's love life has been suddenly thrusted into the spotlight, following a close encounter with fitness influencer Tammy Hembrow on the Gold Coast. Witnesses claimed they saw Hembrow and Smith holding hands and kissing for hours, while another report said they were seen together again after Geelong defeated Essendon last Friday. Armitage said: 'Obviously I was previously tied to him and it is going to be something people are aware of and a lot of the time it's my search history. Fitness influencer Tammy Hembrow and Bailey Smith have set tongues wagging. Credit: Instagram 'But I'm not out here regularly constantly making videos about this man. 'I spent a really long time trying to protect him in the sense of not being fully open on here about what he'd done to me. And how it all went down. Just because there is still that level of respect for someone you loved. When did I get any of that respect back even when we were together? 'The gloves are off. Game on.' She also said she had been told that Smith believed that she was using him for 'clout'. 'It's been a really long time and I just want people to know it's not (about) clout for me, it's more just this is my experience of what I went through and, honestly, I think it plays a huge part as to why I'm still single,'' she said. She said she wanted 'everyone to know that boy put me through the f****** wringer 100 times over ... 'Because I'm an empathetic person, they could just cry and apologise and you put it up to mental health (issues), them being in a bad place, and you're like, 'It's OK, I forgive you.' Because someone you love is convincing you of all these things. 'The manipulation was on a level I've never had. 'I'm like he's in a bad place, that's why he's done these things. OK I'll try again.' And after friends convinced her that Smith had cheated on her in Adelaide, she said he heart sank and 'it's very much in denial at this point'. Smith and Armitage were once a loved-up item. Credit: Instagram 'I could have probably just believed it at that moment in time, but I'm so in love at this point, I need more (time) to allow myself to believe this,'' she said. 'In hindsight never in my life growing up did I think I'd be in a relationship where I would potentially accept someone cheating on me until you're faced with it head on. 'It's a really scary moment for me that I wasn't as strong as I thought I was. '(My friends) didn't want to tell me or call me because they know I would freak out. '(I said to him), 'You f****** cheated on me,' (and) he's like, 'No I didn't'. 'It ends up being a 'me' problem. The way it ends up being spun, I'm in the wrong here, I ended up probably ... apologising. He just got angry, it was a sh**show, he ends up crying …' She said he would claim that people lied about him 'all the time'. 'In my heart of hearts I didn't (believe him) but I didn't know what to do and I didn't yet know in that moment whether I was ready to let it go.' Armitage said she had gone through 'two really hard relationships' where her partner was not loyal to her. But she said she kept her dignity. 'Never once have I named the guy. Even now I'm still not saying his name,' she said. 'Even now all the submissions I get are what happened between you and so and so. That is constant and always will be. 'I only have so much give in me before I snap. After what I've done for that guy, there you go. That is exactly how it went down. This makes no difference in my life. Good riddance, wish you the best. 'Moving forward I have learnt so much in those relationships and I believe I will not make the same mistakes again. Everyone was like why would you date him. I knew him as kids, we grew up together. I've known him for so long, it's going to be different. It never is.' Smith has had a history of mental health issues. 'It's (mental health issues) obviously very topical at the minute, and I think always is in sport and life in general. So it's good that we're starting to shed more light on it, even though it's probably coming to the floor because of some pretty tragic stuff happening,' Smith said in May this year. 'I've worked on myself a lot to where I sought out some professional help; I still see my psych to this day ... but yeah, it was a pretty tough time, especially when you've got (the) media burning some of your relationships, even though they shouldn't be burnt, and continue to be burnt. 'I wouldn't change anything (and) how it all happened, but it was a pretty lonely period (when he went through rehab after an ACL injury).'

Key gear change has Evaporate primed to swamp rivals in 2025 PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield

Trainers Ben, JD and Will Hayes have moved to curb Evaporate's aggression when the smart galloper resumes in Saturday's Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield. Punters immediately started backing Evaporate when 'all-in' betting opened on Saturday's $300,000 feature on Monday afternoon, pushing the four-year-old's quote as short as $3. However, Sydney galloper Private Eye is the $3.70 favourite in the first final field markets ahead of Evaporate at $3.80. Drawing barrier three will give jockey Blake Shinn the chance to give Evaporate the perfect run for his bid to give Lindsay Park its fourth straight PB Lawrence Stakes success. Ben Hayes said a gear change would help Shinn settle the Group 2 winner early in the weight-for-age contest. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'It's probably his one little vice. He does get a bit aggressive in his races and we trialled him with the earmuffs on and he was excellent. 'I think they're going to be a real bonus to him.' Despite having imperfect racing manners, Evaporate won five of his 14 starts and more than $1.4 million in stakes in his two and three-year-old seasons. Evaporate extinguishes his rivals in the G3 HKJC @WorldPool Carbine Club Stakes! 🙌 @lindsayparkrace | @blake_shinn | @aus_turf_club — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) April 5, 2025 The son of Per Incanto ran an honest fourth in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes in February and second in The Kiwi in New Zealand in March. Hayes said the $10 million Golden Eagle would be the irresistible spring aim for Evaporate with the shift from Rosehill to Randwick to help his charge, who won the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes at Randwick in April. 'I think we're going to stick to the mile for this prep because of the Golden Eagle. That's his Grand Final,' Hayes said. 'You only get one chance to run in it and it's worth $10 million so it's worth aiming for as he's won on that track and distance.' Two jumpout wins at Flemington have primed Evaporate for his first-up crack at the early season feature. Evaporate's stablemate Here To Shock shares the third line of betting with the Cliff Brown -trained Sepals at $7.
