
Audi A5 Review 2025
Where to start. This is the new A4, except it's actually the new A5. The old A5 (three-door Coupe and four-door Sportback) is no more, and the eventual replacement for the A4 will be almost the same car, but electric.
But wait, it's not even that simple. Audi changed its naming structures so that even-numbered models would be electric and odd ones combustion engined... but then it changed its mind again, not long after first launching the A5. So it's gone back to the old way. But the A5 will stay the A5 for this generation at least.

My head hurts.
That'll pass. Audi bills the new A5 as a saloon with coupe stylings. Scurry around to the boot and it's actually an electrically assisted hatchback ('a completely new sedan concept' if you believe the press release). Or a liftback, if you want to get technical. The estate remains an estate, mind. Well, an Avant in Audi parlance. My head still hurts. Has anything else changed?
Apart from the name, it's mostly business as usual. Although the car has taken on some of the old A5's swoopier coupe leanings, the windows are narrower than before and you feel very low sitting inside it. Though maybe we've just been hanging out in too many SUVs recently.
The new car is longer, taller and wider than its predecessor, and both the saloon and estate are exactly the same length at just over 4.8 metres. It's sleeker, fancier, and the interior is loaded with tech (you can read more detail on the Interior tab). Come on then, what's it like to drive?
It's not fun as such (even the warmer S5 isn't particularly exciting), but you can appreciate that Audi has put a lot of effort into making the car neutral and reassuring.

The entry petrol actually makes for a relaxed run over country roads, even if its 148bhp/207lb ft and 9.8-second 0–62mph run won't set any records. There's a more powerful 201bhp/251lb ft version of the 2.0-litre petrol that offers more verve and gets the 0–62mph time down to 7.8s.
All of the cars in the A5 range come with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic as standard, which has to work a bit harder in the entry petrol to keep the car going.
The 2.0-litre diesel isn't operating at the heady level of old, but why would Audi invest in it when diesel's sinking away into oblivion? Shame really, as its 201bhp/295lb ft offers 7.7s 0–62mph pace and decent economy. The quattro all-wheel-drive option gets that down to 6.9s thanks to the extra grip.
The PHEV adds an e-motor and 20.7kWh (usable) battery to the 2.0 petrol for a combined power output of 295bhp and 332lb ft, which is good for 0–62mph in a heady 5.9s. It's better driven a little more cautiously, though, especially if you're to hit the official 141.1mpg and 61 miles of e-range.

Why this and not an SUV?
The German premium carmakers have long relied on a mixture of habit and nostalgia to shift their heartland saloons, but the A5 isn't the ubiquitous car it once was. If you prioritise the drive over practicality then the A5 is leaps ahead of any of the SUVs in the Audi camp, but it doesn't have the same cabin and luggage space of a taller 4x4.
The petrol engines at launch are rated around 40mpg and the diesel option at just over 50mpg, so the A5 at least has reasonable economy and running costs in its favour. There's decent space in the back for a couple of passengers (the saloon's stingy for headroom, mind) and a solid amount of clobber.
And of course, at £42k to £55k, the A5 range works out a solid chunk cheaper than Audi's Q5 SUV. And why this and not... a 3 Series?
Good question. The BMW - along with the Mercedes C-Class and Alfa Romeo Giulia - are the A5's main rivals, and as the newest entry you'd expect this to topple all three.
We're not sure it does. As you'll discover on the Driving tab, the A5's dynamics simply aren't as sorted as a 3 Series or Giulia's, and although it's certainly more spirited than a C-Class, the Merc at least has the excuse of going all-in for comfort. And it's a better car for it. This tries to straddle both extremes at the same time, and instead of striking a nice balance it drops through the chasm in between. Pity.

What's the verdict?

Audi's new A5 is a known quantity in every way except for the name, and you have to assume (or at least hope) that the logic on that front will catch on in due course. This car's predecessor was always a rock solid runner that could notch up the miles like nothing else, and the A5 carries that on.
It's not all rosy though: Audi's drift towards overbearing levels of tech is a worry, and you'll need the Avant if you've got lanky teenagers to ferry around.
More concerning is the lack of verve to the handling, which means it trails its main rivals despite being the newer entry. Ultimately the A5 suffers for trying to sit in the middle of that Venn diagram, depriving it of a proper USP.

Mattia Binotto was Ferrari team principal before Frederic Vasseur and previously spent more than 20 years serving the iconic Italian F1 team, but is now leading the Audi project A former Ferrari chief has told the Italian team that they signed Lewis Hamilton"when he was already at the end of his career". Mattia Binotto hopes to see his former outfit succeed but suggested he didn't agree with the decision to sign Hamilton as a 40-year-old. It has been a difficult season so far for the Brit, despite the early high of a maiden Ferrari victory in the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint race. He later added a podium in the second Sprint of the year in Miami, but his Grand Prix results have been underwhelming. His best Sunday result so far in 2025 was fourth in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, a superb comeback drive which delighted the Tifosi gathered at Imola. But it has been difficult other than that and, after finishing sixth in Barcelona last time out, the seven-time F1 champion said it was one of the worst races he had experienced. Hamilton also said the problem is "probably just me", hinting that he might himself be worrying about whether he remains at the top of his game. He turned 40 in January and will be nearly 42 by the end of the 2026 campaign, for which he is already contracted. And former Ferrari team principal Binotto said he thinks the Brit's age is a problem. "Hamilton is of a certain age. Ferrari took him when he was already at the end of his career. The ideal would have been to have him a few years earlier," he told Italian publication Automoto. Binotto was axed by Ferari at the end of the 2022 season after four years as team principal. It brought to an end nearly 30 years of his service to the Maranello squad, having joined in 1995 as an engineer and worked his way up the ranks. He then briefly served as interim team principal earlier this year until Jonathan Wheatley started work on April 1, and is now the official head of the whole project, leading the Audi outfit alongside Wheatley. Binotto still wants to see his former employer do well as both an ex-employee and an Italian F1 fan. And, despite his obvious misgivings about Hamilton, the 55-year-old said he still has faith that the Scuderia can get back on track. He said: "From the outside, perhaps one shouldn't even judge. It's clear that the performance on the track and the results are not good at the moment. "However, I know every single member of that team very well and I know that they are good, strong and capable. They will be able to improve the car and do well in the future and I believe that Ferrari can get some satisfaction this year."

Refreshed Land Rover Discovery Sport comes with plug-in hybrid tech
While much of JLR's recent focus has been on its Jaguar, Range Rover and Defender brands, the Discovery range has also been given some love with the compact Discovery Sport getting a mild makeover and special editions offering more value. The Discovery Sport, which is available as a plug-in hybrid model with an all-electric range of up to 36 miles, now starts with a Dynamic S model costing from £51,320 for the PHEV model. The S gets sporty gloss black panels on the lower body sides, the front grille, around the wheel arches and lower bumpers. New alloy designs complete the new look outside, while inside there's a digital instrument cluster and a floating 11.4-inch curved glass touchscreen, with software that allows users to access up to 90 per cent of tasks within just two taps of the home screen. The Landmark model hints at the original 1990s Discovery with is mountain range logo, but also adds family-friendly features like 'click & go' media holders for back seat passengers and a panoramic roof. The Landmark plug-in hybrid model costs £54,160. Finally, a new Discovery Sport Metropolitan version mirrors the Metropolitan trim level recently launched in the full-size Discovery model with posher silver elements around the outside of the car, leather trim inside, powered front seats and a Meridian surround sound system. This new range-topper costs £59,545 for the PHEV version. In addition to the new models, Discovery has also added a selection of curated accessory packs. Beach Days offers a cooler for food and drink in the centre armrest, tailored sunshades and a boot organiser. Road Trip includes the Click & Go media holders, plus a roof box for extra luggage capacity. And Snowy Days is aimed at skiiers with a ski and snowboard carrier for the roof, plus rubber floor mats to keep the car protected and a Snow Traction System for extra grip in slippery conditions. These accessory packs join existing Discovery packs called Biking Adventures and For Dogs, which add suitably curated accessories. Discovery has analysed data from existing owners in 30 markets across the world finding that the average daily journey length is 32 miles. That means its PHEV models can cover up to 90 per cent of average daily journeys in EV mode assuming the battery is fully charged. Charging at a DC rapid charger can give a zero to 80 per cent charge in 30 minutes.

EV battery makers could create 18,000 jobs in the UK by 2030
The UK stands to benefit from 18,500 battery manufacturing jobs by 2030 with up to a quarter of a million jobs created across Europe, according to research from New AutoMotive. With an estimated 62,274 people already employed across Europe in the battery supply chain, total jobs could top 300,000 by 2030 assuming the EU and UK maintain their current targets for electric vehicles. The analysis in new energy focus group New AutoMotive's Battery Supply Chain Tracker focuses on the growth of Gigafactories, where new batteries are made, and battery recycling. The job numbers could be even higher when the wider supply chain is taken into account. The Battery Supply Chain Tracker comes in the form of an app with an interactive map which gives a view of existing and future projects cataloguing mining, refining, electrodes, gigafactories, and the recycling sectors. Ben Nelmes, CEO of New AutoMotive said: 'Jobs in gigafactories and electric car manufacturing are not just a vague promise of the future, they are today's reality. We found that behind the headlines, Europe has a thriving and rapidly growing battery supply chain, creating jobs and contributing to economic growth. 'But this growth is not guaranteed. The development of this exciting and innovative sector depends on growing electric car sales. Europe needs ambitious policies that encourage carmakers to boost their electric car production, so that Europe can take its place in the global economy as a significant producer of the technologies that will deliver clean, cheap, modern transport.' New AutoMotive's research comes days after former defence secretary Lord Hutton launched a Policy Commission to address the UK's need for battery manufacturing across the energy, defence, transport and tech sectors. The cross-party Commission will consult with stakeholders from across industry, government, academia, and investors, and is set to publish its findings and recommendations early in 2026. Lord Hutton said: "Batteries are no longer just a tech issue or an energy issue – they are a national strategic imperative. The UK cannot afford to remain dependent on foreign supply chains for such a vital component of our economic and energy future. This Commission will ask the difficult questions and provide bold but realistic and politically deliverable recommendations to put Britain on the front foot." Both New AutoMotive's latest tracker and the new Policy Commission come as the government is expected to launch its Industrial Strategy in the coming weeks, and at a time when the UK is still negotiating new trade deals. Commenting on the potential jobs highlighted by the Battery Supply Chain Tracker, Chris Heron, Secretary General of European e-mobility trade association E-Mobility Europe, said: 'Hundreds and thousands of jobs are still to play for, across Europe's battery value chain. 'But we need Europe to level up its political support for scaling-up local projects. We can guide policymakers to act with a clear quantification of where investments are happening across their territories. Today's new battery map is a valuable tool here.' Simon Smith, CCO of UK public charging company InstaVolt which recently opened the UK's largest charging superhub, said: 'The sector, from batteries to charging infrastructure, is a huge, huge, opportunity to deliver the jobs of the future across the continent. This interactive map shines a spotlight on just how big the opportunity is.'
