Lewis Hamilton subject of scathing comment by ex-Ferrari F1 chief

Daily Mirrora day ago

Mattia Binotto was Ferrari team principal before Frederic Vasseur and previously spent more than 20 years serving the iconic Italian F1 team, but is now leading the Audi project
A former Ferrari chief has told the Italian team that they signed Lewis Hamilton"when he was already at the end of his career". Mattia Binotto hopes to see his former outfit succeed but suggested he didn't agree with the decision to sign Hamilton as a 40-year-old.
It has been a difficult season so far for the Brit, despite the early high of a maiden Ferrari victory in the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint race. He later added a podium in the second Sprint of the year in Miami, but his Grand Prix results have been underwhelming.

His best Sunday result so far in 2025 was fourth in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, a superb comeback drive which delighted the Tifosi gathered at Imola. But it has been difficult other than that and, after finishing sixth in Barcelona last time out, the seven-time F1 champion said it was one of the worst races he had experienced.

Hamilton also said the problem is "probably just me", hinting that he might himself be worrying about whether he remains at the top of his game. He turned 40 in January and will be nearly 42 by the end of the 2026 campaign, for which he is already contracted.
And former Ferrari team principal Binotto said he thinks the Brit's age is a problem. "Hamilton is of a certain age. Ferrari took him when he was already at the end of his career. The ideal would have been to have him a few years earlier," he told Italian publication Automoto.
Binotto was axed by Ferari at the end of the 2022 season after four years as team principal. It brought to an end nearly 30 years of his service to the Maranello squad, having joined in 1995 as an engineer and worked his way up the ranks.

In August last year, it was announced that he had joined the Audi F1 project as chief technical officer at Sauber. He then briefly served as interim team principal earlier this year until Jonathan Wheatley started work on April 1, and is now the official head of the whole project, leading the Audi outfit alongside Wheatley.

Binotto still wants to see his former employer do well as both an ex-employee and an Italian F1 fan. And, despite his obvious misgivings about Hamilton, the 55-year-old said he still has faith that the Scuderia can get back on track.
He said: "From the outside, perhaps one shouldn't even judge. It's clear that the performance on the track and the results are not good at the moment.
"However, I know every single member of that team very well and I know that they are good, strong and capable. They will be able to improve the car and do well in the future and I believe that Ferrari can get some satisfaction this year."

Where Rashford and four more England stars in limbo this summer may end up

Marcus Rashford looks set to leave Manchester United this summer, but the identity of his destination is unclear, with several teams eyeing a move for the England international This summer's transfer window is already set up to be an interesting one, with Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal all looking to spend heavily. But an overlooked aspect is on the players who could be leaving those clubs. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish are all expected to be moved on by their teams this summer. The trio, alongside Kyle Walker and Raheem Sterling, are out of favour as it stands. ‌ While they are all expected to be on the move this summer, so far there has been little concrete interest. Most of them have also been left out of their team's squads for the Club World Cup. ‌ That is the biggest signal that there is no future for them. Their current clubs, United, City and Chelsea will be hoping that interested suitors kickstart their pursuits when the second window opens. That opens on Monday and will run through to summer deadline day on 1 September. Here, Mirror Football looks at the future of the England quintet and where they could end up. Marcus Rashford - Barcelona Top of the list is Marcus Rashford, who has fallen out with United boss Ruben Amorim. There is no future for the Englishman at Old Trafford, with the attacker spending the second half of the season on loan at Aston Villa. While Villa have a £40m option to buy clause, they are yet to activate it. It appears unlikely they will do so, while United would accept a similar fee from any interested suitor. But like in January, Rashford's sights are set on La Liga champions Barcelona. He has already held talks with the Spanish side, who are eyeing a new attacker this summer. If he holds out until the final weeks of the window, he may well secure his dream move to Catalonia. Jadon Sancho - Borussia Dortmund ‌ Jadon Sancho's career has fallen flat since his big money move to Manchester United. Chelsea even paid a £5m penalty to return him to Old Trafford at the end of his loan spell this season. There are few obvious destinations for the winger. One team who are thought to be interested are Borussia Dortmund, where Sancho burst onto the scene. A third spell back in Germany currently appears to be the most likely. Kyle Walker - Saudi Pro League ‌ Kyle Walker time at the top level appears to be over, with the 34-year-old having been left out of Manchester City's squad for the Club World Cup. He spent the second half of the season at AC Milan. But it appears unlikely that the Italian side will be bringing him back permanently. He could well join a Premier League side further down the table. There is also a possibility though that he could end up being left with the Saudi Pro League as his only option. Jack Grealish - Newcastle ‌ While Walker is struggling for suitors, Jack Grealish has a number of teams interested in him. Grealish's form has dropped off a cliff since winning the treble and has fallen out of favour with Pep Guardiola. Former club Aston Villa have been linked, as have Everton. But Grealish may well wish to remain at a side in the Champions League, which could lead him to join Eddie Howe at Newcastle. Raheem Sterling - Fenerbahce The final Englishman whose future is unclear is Raheem Sterling, though he is certain to leave Chelsea. Blues boss Enzo Maresca has made it clear he will not be using Sterling at any point. He will not be returning to Arsenal and it is hard to see a Premier League club who would take him. Sterling has already rejected a move to the Saudi Pro League, leaving Turkish side Fenerbahce as the surprise frontrunners. A spell in Turkey appears likely for Sterling.

Audi's new Q5 e-hybrid will go 62 miles without its engine, yours from £56k

First Look Get ready to waft even further than before Skip 10 photos in the image carousel and continue reading The Audi's Q5 e-hybrid PHEV has arrived in both SUV and Sportback body styles, boasting a 295bhp powertrain and up to 62 miles of pure electric wafting. That new rear-mounted battery is 45 per cent larger (now 20.7kWh) than its predecessor, and signals a new 'cell-to-pack' approach for Audi. It means the cells are glued directly to the battery housing, as opposed to within the battery module; more power density crammed into a smaller space. Simple but smart. Advertisement - Page continues below It'll accept a maximum charge rate of 11kW at a three-phase AC charger, with a full juice taking around two-and-a-half hours. Not that many of us live in three-phase homes, mind. The engine is a 2.0-litre TFSI four-pot, itself delivering 248bhp and contributing to a total torque output of 332lb ft. 0-62mph is a not-at-all bad 6.2 seconds, with an 87mph top speed in EV-only mode and 155mph otherwise. You might like Aside from the sports suspension, seven-speed DCT gearbox and trusty Quattro all-wheel drive, the other main technical bits revolve around the regen braking. Audi says it has 'significantly' ramped up the Q5's performance, and will now harvest energy at up to 88kW. You can cycle through three levels of adjustment using paddles on the steering wheel. Speaking of which, the interior comes well furnished as standard. It'll have the same 14.5in central touchscreen and 11.9in Virtual Cockpit as the mild hybrids, with the option of an extra 10.9in display for the front passenger. There's a vented phone charger providing up to 15 watts of power, supplemented by a quartet of USB-C ports split between the front and back seats. Advertisement - Page continues below The Q5's rear bench also tilts and adjusts, so you can make small gains on the 438-litre boot space (433 litres in the Sportback) when necessary. Fold it down entirely, and this increases to 1,358 and 1,300 litres respectively. Prices start at £56,740 for the SUV, or you'll need to cough up an extra £2.5k for the Sportback. Deliveries are scheduled to start this September. Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter. Look out for your regular round-up of news, reviews and offers in your inbox. But this weekend Fabio Cardoso will take another step towards banishing the memory of Progres Niederkorn when he turns out in the all new Club World Cup against the likes of Erling Haaland. Caixinha ended up remonstrating with fans from a bush in Luxembourg - a fate from which he never recovered - and Cardoso didn't last too much longer. After agreeing to terminate his deal with the Gers after just 18 appearances for the Light Blues, he promptly signed on a permanent deal with Portuguese side Santa Clara. From there it was onto Portuguese giants Porto, with whom he won the league and three Portuguese Cups. Now 31, he spent last season on loan at Al-Ain in the UAE and has just been included in their squad for the Club World Cup in the US. They've landed in Group G, where they will take on Manchester City's fearsomely reassembled squad, Italian giants Juventus and Al-Wydad of Casablanca, Morocco. He's in action a week today against Juventus, as he joins another former Rangers star, Ryan Kent of Seattle Sounders, at the event. Kent's Sounders have found a tough looking group which includes new European champions Paris St Germain, Atletico Madrid and Botafogo of Brazil. £6m Rangers star Danilo spotted doing gruelling sessions on beach in Brazil as he gears up for make or break pre-season One of Cardoso's low points in Glasgow was suffering a broken nose against Motherwell in their Betfred Cup semi-final defeat courtesy of an elbow from the Larnakshire side's Ryan Bowman. The 24-year old even took aim at his former club in how they dealt with the situation. He said: "The negative part was to have broken my nose, because I took some time to recover and from there I played little. I used to say it was a year of learning. "It gave me a lot of stuff and if I have to go out again I'm going to be much more prepared." 6 Cardoso in action against Aberdeen Credit: Keith Campbell - The Sun Glasgow 6 Erling Haaland of Manchester City looks dejected Credit: Getty 6 Cardoso in the kit of Al Ain Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
