Ohio State football misses out on another 4-star edge rusher for the 2026 class
On Monday, four-star defensive end Landon Barnes chose Ole Miss over the Buckeyes, making it two days in a row OSU got bad news on one of its targets on the edge, joining Carter Meadows, who gave his verbal pledge to Michigan on Sunday. It's a bit of a troubling trend and might be a product of where things are with the new NIL and direct revenue payment model rolling out.
Barnes hails from Duncanville, Texas, and is ranked as the No. 139 overall prospect and 18th edge in the 2026 recruiting cycle according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Larry Johnson and gang would love to add another edge rusher to the class of 2026, but it's beginning to look like they might have to focus on the 2027 class to make that happen once all of the dust settles with all of the uncertainty. OSU still has some good defensive tackles with the potential of another one or two coming, but defensive end will likely become a priority now.
Ohio State still has a top-five class for 2026, but the momentum you would have thought coming off a College Football Playoff national championship run hasn't been as fast and frequent as many would like. There's still time, and it's still a very, very good class, but not what many would have predicted.
Let's hope Ohio State can turn up the temperature on recruiting and bring home another fantastic class when all the shouting and hand-ringing stops in December.

Ohio State Reacts to TreVeyon Henderson's NFL Preseason Touchdown
Ohio State Reacts to TreVeyon Henderson's NFL Preseason Touchdown originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New England Patriots bolstered their running back room in the 2025 NFL draft, selecting Ohio State standout TreVeyon Henderson with the No. 38 overall pick. As the start of the 2025 NFL season quickly approaches, Henderson continues to prove himself as a viable starting running back option at the next level. The second round pick currently sits No. 2 on the Patriots' depth chart, but could find himself in the starting position sooner rather than later. Henderson continued to impress in Saturday's preseason matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. The 22-year-old running back opened up the scoring with his first career rushing touchdown from inside the 10-yard line. The Buckeyes took to social media to react to this accomplishment on Saturday. "Touchdown Trey is back in action," the team wrote on X. While this touchdown marked Henderson's first rushing score, it's not his touchdown in the league. In the Patriots' preseason opener against the Washington Commanders, the former Ohio State running back notched a 100-yard kickoff return on his first NFL touch. He finished that 48-18 win with three catches for 12 yards and one carry for 18 yards. In his final collegiate season with the Buckeyes, Henderson notched 1,016 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground — leading the Big Ten with 7.1 yards per carry. He also reeled in 27 catches for 284 yards and one touchdown in Ohio State's national championship season. The Patriots will close out their preseason schedule with a matchup against the New York Giants on Aug. 21. New England's 2025 regular season will begin with a Week 1 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sep. 7. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 16, 2025, where it first appeared.

CJ Carr named starting quarterback for No. 6 Notre Dame over Kenny Minchey: ‘Their strengths are very similar'
CJ Carr will be Notre Dame's starting quarterback when the No. 6 Irish open the season at No. 10 Miami on Aug. 31. Notre Dame, last season's College Football Playoff runner-up, made the announcement Tuesday morning via its football social media pages on X and Instagram. Carr replaces Riley Leonard, who was a sixth-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the spring. Carr, in his second year with the Irish, hasn't yet thrown a pass in a collegiate game. The four-star recruit out of Saline, Mich., is the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr. He was in competition during fall camp with Kenny Minchey, a third-year Notre Dame player who completed 3 of 3 passes for 16 yards and rushed for 12 yards and a touchdown in four games. The pair split reps with the first team throughout camp. 'Their strengths are very similar,' Notre Dame quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli told reporters at the beginning of camp. 'Both guys are really good in terms of their routine and their preparation. Both have really high football IQs. It means a lot to both of them. Both have a lot of arm talent. 'CJ is probably a little bit more vocal than Kenny is. Kenny is probably a little more athletic than CJ is. But all in all, we've got two really good quarterbacks that are competing their butts off.' Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock said earlier this week that they saw positives from both quarterbacks during camp, with Denbrock declaring them 'both good enough to help us win football games.' Freeman said he thought both QBs worked hard, were coachable and were able to move on quickly from mistakes. He wasn't ready to name a starter Sunday morning when he met with reporters, but had laid out the criteria for the winner, including demonstrating consistency and sound decision-making. 'I don't want to just sit here and watch the outcome, good or bad, and blame the quarterback,' Freeman said. 'It's like, 'What decision was he supposed to make? Did he make the right decision?' Then you look and say, 'OK, was the ball good? Was the protection right?' All those different things that are on his plate. But that is more important to me than anything, the decision-making.' After winning the competition, Carr faces a big challenge in getting ready for the road opener against a ranked opponent. The Irish then host No. 19 Texas A&M in their second game on Sept. 13. Denbrock offered a word of caution to those observing. 'I hope everybody knows that no matter who we name the quarterback, it's no easy task going down to Miami and playing in a season opener,' Denbrock said. 'No matter who the starter is, there will be a learning curve involved in all of this. But we're confident we've got two guys who can compete at a very high level and do a really, really good job.'

Watch: Notre Dame's new starting quarterback CJ Carr's high school highlight reel
While we haven't seen much of Notre Dame football's new starting quarterback CJ Carr at this level, we can go back and look at what he did in high school. Coming out of Saline High School in Michigan, Carr was a nationally ranked prospect as the No. 68 overall recruit in the 2024 class according to the 247Sports Composite. Sure, we saw him during the past two years of Blue and Gold games, but those are set up for success for the quarterbacks. During his final season of high school, Carr would throw for 2,754 yards with 24 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, while running for 91 yards, but accounting for 9 other scores. Over his three years starting, he threw for a total of 8,135 yards with 78 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, while accounting for 312 yards rushing and 16 scores. Those are very impressive numbers from Carr, and hopefully he can replicate that success with the Irish. Check out below his senior year highlights, for a glimpse of what is to come when Notre Dame takes the field on the road against Miami at the end of the month.
