Artists behind Dudley's Sam Allardyce mural are 'glad the big man loved it'

Yahoo4 days ago
The mystery surrounding a Sam Allardyce mural in Dudley town centre has been solved as two artists have come forward to claim credit.
Dion Kitson and Adam Wynn collaborate on the 'Really Big Sam' piece which featured the former England boss tucking into a bag of orange chips.
Big Sam was a fan of the work and said he was "absolutely privileged" to be honoured in his hometown, adding: "I think it was a very good likeness."

In a video message shared with ITV News, Allardyce joked: "Chips look a bit hot, but I really enjoyed seeing it.
"Whoever did it, thank you very much."
The mural - and other bizarre artwork - appeared in the town last week, but the artists only revealed themselves on Sunday, July 20.
In a joint Instagram post, they clubbed together footage from ITV News and a clip showing the mural being pasted onto the wall in Union Street.
Passers-by were also caught on camera as they snapped pictures of the finished product.

The video was captioned: "Dion Kitson x Adam Wynn created the mural dedicated to Sam Allardyce in Dudley town centre. We're glad the big man loved it."
The duo were now selling A3 prints, which they have signed and dated, for £50.
Other artwork that appeared in the town centre last week included a 'Beware of the Cob' piece, which appeared around the corner from the Allardyce mural on High Street.
The humorous artwork was plastered on a boarded up store next to The Full Moon pub.
Another appeared on Castle Street - opposite Sofi's Plaice chip shop - showing bags of chips lying on a sunbed dubbed 'The Orange Chip Maker 3000'.
While it is likely the duo were also behind these pieces, they have not officially claimed responsibility.

Post-Wimbeldon, A New Generation of Tennis Stars Are Driving the Sport's TV Demand

While familiar legends have long dominated tennis fandom, recent demand data suggests the sport's fan base is increasingly rallying behind younger stars Following this year's Wimbledon Championships, a shift is becoming clear not only on the court, but in the hearts of global audiences. While legends like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have long dominated the tennis world, recent demand data for these players suggests that the sport's fan base is increasingly rallying behind a new generation. The final round of the Men's Singles tournament saw Carlos Alcaraz facing off against Jannik Sinner in a rematch of the French Open earlier this year, which Alcaraz won. Alcaraz was the defending Wimbledon champ, having bested Djokovic the past two years, so it was something of an upset when Sinner emerged victorious. The budding rivalry between these two players can serve as a compelling narrative that will draw attention to events like Wimbledon and the sport of tennis in general. More from TheWrap Post-Wimbeldon, A New Generation of Tennis Stars Are Driving the Sport's TV Demand 'Love Island USA' Season 7 Ends as Peacock's Most-Watched Original Ever With 18.4 Billion Minutes 'Live With Kelly and Mark' Sees Ratings Growth for 2nd Week in a Row With 2.1 Million Viewers | Exclusive As Skydance-Paramount Merger Closes, the 'South Park' Trump Takedown Shows the Fight Is On | Analysis While established tennis champs have historically captured the lion's share of attention from global tennis fans, the global demand for Alcaraz and Sinner has surged since their recent high-profile matchups. As of July 14, Sinner was the most in-demand athlete in the world, with Alcaraz a close second. This isn't to say Djokovic, Nadal or Federer have faded into irrelevance. All three continue to spark meaningful demand spikes around key moments. For example, Djokovic during the Australian Open and Federer during anniversary tributes and sponsorship appearances. However, the overall trend points toward a generational handoff. Today's fans are turning their attention to the athletes shaping the next era. This changing of the guard also appears to be shifting national interest in the sport. Parrot Analytics' Sports Demand shows that in Serbia, Djokovic's home country, tennis accounts for a sizable 21% of all demand for sports competitions. A national sports hero like Djokovic has the ability to drive interest in a sport like tennis in his home country. The share of demand for tennis in Italy so far this year (19.7%) is not far behind Serbia. As national pride fuels fan engagement, it is likely we're seeing the Sinner effect in real time, illustrating how the success of a local star can drive broader interest and growth for a sport in their home market. In Spain, France and Australia, traditional tennis strongholds, tennis still commands a healthy share of overall sports interest. In the U.S., tennis captures 8.6% of the country's sports demand, which is just above the global average of 8.1%. It serves as a reminder that even in a crowded sports ecosystem, elite talent and iconic tournaments like Wimbledon still break through. For marketers, rights holders and broadcasters, these audience signals matter. They suggest that while nostalgia for tennis legends remains potent, the business of tennis must increasingly be forward-looking. Rising stars like Alcaraz and Sinner aren't just winning matches, they are winning over fans, sponsors and entire countries. To fully capitalize on this momentum, platforms and advertisers may want to double down on storytelling around this generational shift. If demand is any indicator, the future of tennis is already here and audiences are tuning in. Duchess Sophie's Easy, Breezy Summer Uniform Is a Floaty Floral Dress With Designer Espadrille Wedges

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The heat wave sweeping the U.K. has finally died down, but Duchess Sophie effortlessly delivered a master class in dressing for sweltering temps while still looking regal. Her solution? A colorful floral dress and comfy espadrille wedges. The Duchess of Edinburgh has been seen in numerous variations of the warm-weather uniform over the past month, and it's a formula that works for so many summer events. On Tuesday, July 1, Sophie attended the Hertfordshire School's Food & Farming Day, bringing back the bright blue dress she wore to Wimbledon in 2019. The short-sleeved Peter Pilotto style was perfect for a day outside with students, and she paired it with her favorite Penelope Chilvers "Valencia" wedges, as seen in photos shared by royal photographer Tim Rooke on X. View Deal View Deal Earlier in the week, she turned to royally approved British label Me+Em—a favorite of Princess Kate's—while attending the RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival. Sophie's baby blue outfit was fitting for a flower show, with the duchess choosing the brand's "Wild Bloom" maxi dress with short sleeves, a keyhole neck and a pink and orange floral print. Once again, the Duchess of Edinburgh wore Penelope Chilvers espadrilles, walking through the festival in the brand's white leather Mary Jane wedges and carrying a summery crochet bag by Sophie Habsburg. And for an outing at a ballet school last week, the duchess wore a bright green maxi dress by Zimmerman. The loose wrap-style dress featured a white floral pattern, and what better to wear while watching dancers perform than a lace-up espadrille? Sophie wore—you guessed it—another pair of Penelope Chilvers wedges, repeating the same white peep-toe style she wore for an afternoon tea in Windsor last month. Micheal Ward charged with two counts of rape

Top Boy actor Micheal Ward has been charged with two counts of rape. The 27-year-old actor – who won the EE Rising Star BAFTA award in 2020 – will appear at Thames Magistrates' Court on Thursday, August 28 for two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault against a woman. Detective Superintendent Scott Ware, whose team is leading the Met Police's investigation, told MailOnline: 'Our specialist officers continue to support the woman who has come forward - we know investigations of this nature can have significant impact on those who make reports.' Catherine Baccas, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London South, said: 'Having carefully reviewed a file of evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Micheal Ward, 27, with two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault against a woman in January 2023. 'He will appear at Thames Magistrates' Court on Thursday, August 28. 'We remind all concerned that proceedings against the suspect are active and he has a right to a fair trial. 'It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in anyway prejudice these proceedings.' He has been dropped by UK agency Olivia Bell Management. When Deadline contacted the agency after the charges were announced, an employee said: 'We no longer represent him.' Micheal is best known for his role of Jamie in Top Boy, which he starred in between 2013 and 2022. He went on to work with well known actors including Olivia Colman, Colin Firth, Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone. His most recent film was Ari Aster's Eddington, which debuted at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
