Study: Portland metro area generates more than half of Oregon's economic output
The economic research firm — in partnership with Portland Metro Chamber, the City of Portland, and Multnomah County — found that the Portland metro area generates more than half of Oregon's total economic output.

The Portland metro area, which also includes parts of Washington and Clackamas Counties, is home to nearly 43% of the state's residents. However, it also accounts for more than 57% of the state's economic output, or GDP, nearly half the state's employment, and more than half of state tax revenue.
Multnomah County in particular — with 19% of Oregon's population — contributes nearly 24% of the state's tax revenue.
On the flip side, the Portland metro area has also been slower to recover from the effects of the pandemic — and job losses — than the rest of the state.
'If the state is trying to understand from an economic development strategy, what does growth look like in different ways, we can talk about the Portland economy and understand that growing in the county and in the tri-county disproportionately benefits the rest of the state,' Mike Wilkerson of ECOnorthwest said.

This report also comes amid an ongoing urban and rural divide in Oregon — as is the case in most states.
But Andrew Hoan said rural Oregon communities already concerned about the outsize influence of Portland also benefit from the tax revenues the tri-county region generates.
'This isn't an 'us versus them,' this is not 'we win, you lose' scenario,' Hoan said. 'This is, 'Everybody wins when Multnomah County and Portland is winning.''

Oregon Bureau of Land Management timber sales made more than $13.5M in revenue in July
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Oregon has made more than $13.5 million in timber sales in July, according to the Bureau of Land Management. Officials say the sales included 7.7 million board feet of timber from more than 1,670 public acres. That's enough wood to build approximately 3,000 homes. Mayor Wilson: Portland to comply with Trump administration's DEI demands BLM manages roughly 2.4 million acres of forest in western Oregon, an area claimed to be 'some of the most productive forests in the world.' Revenue from the state's timber sales goes toward the U.S Treasury and 18 of Oregon's western counties. 'Timber from BLM-managed forests is fueling jobs, industry, and economic growth across western Oregon,' BLM Director Bill Groffy said. 'These sales reflect our commitment to managing public lands in a way that strengthens rural communities, supports working forests, and ensures the responsible use of America's natural resources.' Burdoin, Snyder Canyon fires continue burning in Klickitat County
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two fires in Klickitat County, Wash., continue to burn Thursday as crews seek to close gaps in fire lines to prevent further spread. According to fire officials, on Wednesday, crews closed the ; however, they said it will still take time to contain the fire fully. Currently, the Burdoin Fire is listed at 11,248 acres and 13% contained. Trump approves FEMA funds for flood-hit Oregon communities To the northeast of the Burdoin Fire, the Snyder Canyon Fire, which broke out along Brewer Road Wednesday afternoon, continues burning, covering around 52 acres. On Thursday morning, officials said that the Complex Incident Management Team Northwest 13, which is in command of the Burdoin Fire, also assumed command of the Snyder Canyon Fire. Fire officials now confirm this fire has destroyed more than 40 structures. 'There are 44 structures, unofficially, that we were able to identify that were lost in the fire footprint,' Northwest 13 incident commander Brian Gales. One woman, Linda, told KOIN 6 News she watched her neighbors' house in Lyle burn from across the hill. 'Right above that was the Wilson's property; that was a life home for a guy here in town,' she said. With bags packed, Linda says for now she and her husband are staying put despite being some of the dozens under Level 3 'Go Now' evacuation orders. 'It's not devastating to us, but for some many people it is devastating, because it came so fast up Highway 8 they didn't have time,' Linda said. 'A few people did stay and save their homes but a lot were in danger.' From hand crews to engine teams and aviation assets, officials say 900 firefighters are working together to minimize the footprint and damage. There are two Red Cross emergency shelters — one at Grace Baptist Church in White Salmon and the other at the Dalles Middle School. All evacuations for both fires remain in place; evacuation maps for the Burdoin and Snyder Canyon fires are available online. Highway 14 still remains closed in the area of the Burdoin Fire.
