Ahier appointed Jersey Privileges and Procedures Committee chair

BBC News08-07-2025
Deputy Steve Ahier has been appointed as the new head of Jersey's Privileges and Procedures Committee. The committee oversees the way the States Assembly works and helps formulate the island's election laws.Constable Karen Shenton Stone recently stepped down as head of the committee after three years in the role.Deputy Ahier said he wanted to work on getting more young islanders engaged in politics.
In a speech, Ahier told the assembly that he wanted to help young people discover the passion he had for politics as a child. He said: "When I was a child, politics was regularly discussed at home and, on the occasion of an island-wide election, my father would drive us around to the various polling stations to hear what the results were."This would commence in St Mary and would head east through the country parishes, ending in our then parish hall of St Saviour."Trying to revive that sort of enthusiasm would be difficult to invoke in this modern age. "But starting the conversation by reaching out to as many people of possible in all walks of life is one of the primary functions and, hopefully, we will be able to put up our voting figures."

Sir Keir Starmer must show that he is on side of strivers over skivers to avoid further voter resentment

Play fair before it's too late, PM LABOUR'S successes have so far been few and far between. But they have succeeded in one thing — uniting huge numbers of voters in a feeling that the Government is presiding over a country rank with unfairness and double standards. Accusations of the UK becoming a two-tier society started after last summer's riots. This week has shown how that has now morphed into other areas of British life. Chief among the furies of voters is the ongoing incompetent handling of illegal migration. Far from delivering on a promise to smash the gangs and stop the boats, Labour has let in 50,000 illegal migrants in record time. Hard-working but hard-up families who despaired at the £5.7 million a day bill for asylum hotels, now watch in horror as young single men are moved into blocks of flats next door, rent-free. Meanwhile, Labour-run Birmingham council lavishes money on celebrations of Pakistan Independence Day and allows the unfurling of thousands of Palestinian emblems across the city — while insisting English St George flags must be torn down. From taxing small farmers, to driving pubs to closure, Government economic policy has also been woefully unfair. Rachel Reeves's National Insurance rise has cost tens of thousands of ordinary people their jobs and stamped out growth. Yet Labour's union paymasters are handed inflation-busting pay hikes. Families face more massive tax rises in the Autumn — on their hard-earned savings, their pensions and their kids' modest inheritances — to fill the Chancellor's £50billion black hole. Small boat crossings under Labour are on brink of hitting 50,000 - one illegal migrant every 11 mins since the election The diminishing number of people who DO still have a job now must pay more than ever to fund EIGHT MILLION on Universal Credit — where half are under no obligation to look for employment at all. There is no plan for tackling this ruinous waste of money and human potential since ministers caved in to their Left-wing backbenchers over welfare reform. This all adds up to a highly damaging impression that Labour is not treating voters equally. We are told Number Ten now recognises just how important 'fairness' is to the electorate. Good. Now Sir Keir Starmer must show that he really is on the side of the strivers over the skivers. Does our former human rights lawyer Prime Minister have the courage to rip up or radically reform the ECHR, the only way to stop the boats? Will he put money back in families' pockets, or keep relentlessly taxing them to fund projects beloved by the hard-Left of his party? Labour has already squandered public goodwill from its landslide victory. It can ill afford to allow voter resentment to fester further.

Jared Kushner's firm buys 8% stake in UK lender OakNorth, source says

Aug 15 (Reuters) - A private equity firm founded by U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner has signed a deal to buy an 8% stake in British lender OakNorth, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday. The firm, Affinity Partners, was founded by Kushner in 2021 and has investments from funds in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. The investment company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Sky News, which previously reported the development, said that Affinity acquired the OakNorth stake from an unidentified existing investor. OakNorth declined to comment. The SoftBank-backed (9984.T), opens new tab group, founded by Rishi Khosla and Joel Perlman in 2015, has in the past leaned towards a U.S. listing to expand its business. The news also comes amid growing interest around Trump and his affiliates' business ventures and talks of the U.S. government possibly taking a stake in Intel. OakNorth reported pretax profit of nearly 215 million pounds ($291.5 million) last year as it continued its expansion in the U.S., where it began operating by mid-2023 and has received licenses for a representative office in New York. Sky News said the value of the Affinity-OakNorth transaction was unclear. Reports have said the British lender was valued at about $2.8 billion in its latest funding round in 2019. OakNorth runs a business bank in Britain with more than 7.5 billion pounds in assets and supplies its technology to lenders elsewhere. In 2024, it had lent more than 2.1 billion pounds to customers. Its clients include F1 Arcade and personalised training provider Ultimate Performance. "Despite ongoing macro-economic challenges, we are bullish for 2025," OakNorth co-founder and CEO Rishi Khosla said in March after the company's 2024 report was published. SoftBank did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. ($1 = 0.7376 pounds)

Thousands more Afghans affected by second data breach, ministers say

Thousands more Afghan nationals may have been affected by another data breach, the government has said. Up to 3,700 Afghans brought to the UK between January and March 2024 have potentially been impacted as names, passport details and information from the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy has been compromised again, this time by a breach on a third party supplier used by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). This was not an attack directly on the government but a cyber security incident on a sub-contractor named Inflite - The Jet Centre - an MoD supplier that provides ground handling services for flights at London Stansted Airport. 2:34 The flights were used to bring Afghans to the UK, travel to routine military exercises, and official engagements. It was also used to fly British troops and government officials. Those involved were informed of it on Friday afternoon by the MoD, marking the second time information about Afghan nationals relocated to the UK has been compromised. It is understood former Tory ministers are also affected by the hack. Earlier this year, it emerged that almost 7,000 Afghan nationals would have to be relocated to the UK following a massive data breach by the British military that successive governments tried to keep secret with a super-injunction. Defence Secretary John Healey offered a "sincere apology" for the first data breach in a statement to the House of Commons, saying he was "deeply concerned about the lack of transparency" around the data breach, adding: "No government wishes to withhold information from the British public, from parliamentarians or the press in this manner." 2:57 The previous Conservative government set up a secret scheme in 2023 to relocate Afghan nationals impacted by the data breach, but who were not eligible for an existing programme to relocate and help people who had worked for the British government in Afghanistan. The mistake exposed personal details of close to 20,000 individuals, endangering them and their families, with as many as 100,000 people impacted in total. A government spokesperson said of Friday's latest breach: "We were recently notified that a third party sub-contractor to a supplier experienced a cyber security incident involving unauthorised access to a small number of its emails that contained basic personal information. "We take data security extremely seriously and are going above and beyond our legal duties in informing all potentially affected individuals. The incident has not posed any threat to individuals' safety, nor compromised any government systems." In a statement, Inflite - The Jet Centre confirmed the "data security incident" involving "unauthorised access to a limited number of company emails". "We have reported the incident to the Information Commissioner's Office and have been actively working with the relevant UK cyber authorities, including the National Crime Agency and the National Cyber Security Centre, to support our investigation and response," it said. "We believe the scope of the incident was limited to email accounts only, however, as a precautionary measure, we have contacted our key stakeholders whose data may have been affected during the period of January to March 2024."
