Bears LB Noah Sewell discussed goal-line stop vs. Dolphins

Yahoo3 days ago
Early in Sunday's preseason matchup against the Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears linebacker Noah Sewell, competing for a starting job, made a statement with his play.
In the first quarter, as the Dolphins were threatening at the goal line and knocking on the door of scoring a touchdown, Sewell fired through the gap on fourth down and logged a tackle for loss, forcing a turnover on downs.
Sewell's play kept the game scoreless early on and put an emphasis on his performance as he competes for the third linebacker spot alongside veterans T.J. Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds. Ending the game with six total tackles, Sewell's one tackle for loss came in one of the most crucial moments in the early stages of the game as he slammed the door on Miami's offense.
Following the game, Sewell discussed his goal line stop and how the defense's mentality helped prepare him for that moment.
"I knew what kind of situation we were in," Sewell said, via Bears on CHSN. "I was like somebody has to step up, why can't it be me? I just saw the gap open up and I shot my shot. After that play happened I just blacked out and celebrated, everyone was telling me good play, and then I remembered that it was a fourth down stop. Day in and day out, we attack the day the same. Physicality is highly preached in our defensive room so I just try to uphold that."
Sewell's performance should give him an upper hand in the battle for the third linebacker spot early in preseason, and his development could be a fun surprise throughout this season.

Green Bay Packers Key Player Could Request a Trade

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Green Bay Packers already had a loaded wide receiver room going into the offseason, but they still decided to double down on it by selecting Matthew Golden and Savion Williams in the NFL Draft. This has created one heck of a glut at the position for the Packers, who feature Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks and Christian Watson (who is recovering from a torn ACL) on their depth chart. More news: Packers Could Cut 3x Super Bowl Champion Following Brutal Preseason Showing Surely, there won't be enough touches to go around for the entire group. Heck, last year, Doubs expressed some displeasure over his role. For that reason, Green Bay seems to be a candidate to make a wide receiver trade. Bleacher Report's Alex Kay seems to believe that Doubs himself could get the process going, naming him among four players who could be next to request a trade before the start of the season. More/Getty Images "While the Nevada product has held an important but slightly limited role in the Packers' passing attack, he may not be too happy with the prospects of it being further diminished in 2025," Kay wrote. "It wouldn't be the first time he openly expressed unhappiness with his opportunities, either." Doubs caught 46 passes for 601 yards and four touchdowns last season, but it should be noted that he did that over the course of 13 games rather than a full campaign. Still, it seems rather inevitable that Doubs' targets will be cut in 2025. The Packers took Golden in the first round, so they definitely plan on using him. Then there is Williams, who could end up becoming a bigger version of Deebo Samuel. "Although he's only earning a base salary of $3.4 million this season, obliging a potential trade request would help Green Bay's brass out in several ways," Kay continued. "Moving Doubs would not only free up a roster spot, but it would also help bring clarity to the team's pass-catching pecking order and potentially return even more draft capital than the Packers would receive via the NFL's compensatory pick formula for departing free agents." More news: Buccaneers Connected to Stunning Trade That Could Reshape the NFL Green Bay initially selected Doubs in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and it could probably expect to receive similar compensation in return. Perhaps the Packers could extract a third-round pick from a team desperate for wide receiver help, but it's hard to imagine them getting any more than that. Regardless, it might be worth it for Green Bay to free up its rookie pass-catchers and to avoid any potential locker-room issues. For more on the Packers and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

Hugo Ekitike does something only Darwin Nunez had done before on Liverpool debut

Hugo Ekitike became just the second player to register a goal and an assist on his Premier League debut as he continued his impressive start to life at Liverpool on Friday. The summer signing from Eintracht Frankfurt opened his Reds account in the Community Shield last weekend and he followed that up with the opening goal against Bournemouth at Anfield. In the second half he claimed an assist, as his pass was collected by Dominik Szoboszlai, who did most of the hard work as he placed a neat finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. The only other Liverpool player in Liverpool's history to claim a goal and an assist on their Premier League debut is Darwin Nunez, who achieved the feat against Fulham at Craven Cottage in 2022. Liverpool new boy Leoni, who was in the stands at Anfield for the Reds' Premier League opener, said he simply could not say no to a move to Merseyside when he found out about the club's interest in signing him. 'I'm very happy to be here. It's a really great sensation and I'm honoured to be here,' Leoni told club media. 'Yeah, a lot [of excitement]. I'm so honoured. I was very happy [about Liverpool being interested]. When I saw this I said, 'Wow, this is crazy.' I'm very happy.' He added: "It's one of the best clubs in the world. It's not possible to say no to this club. Yes, [it was] easy – because it's one of the best clubs in the world. I didn't say no!" Liverpool is still keen to sign Marc Guehi before the summer transfer window closes after completing a deal to sign Leoni. Leoni has signed a six-year deal at Anfield and will go straight into the first-team set-up, despite being just 18 years old. He takes the number of center-backs in Arne Slot's squad back up to four, following the departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayern Munich at the beginning of July. There remains some uncertainty surrounding the position though, with Ibrahima Konate's current contract due to expire next summer, and uncertainty surrounding the fitness of Joe Gomez, who has not appeared in a competitive game for Liverpool since February. The addition of Guehi alongside Leoni would add some stability to Liverpool's defense, and the club is expected to accelerate its pursuit of the England international as the end of the window approaches.

Report – Inter Milan & Basel Talks For Argentina U21 Star At Risk Of Collapse

Talks between Inter Milan and Basel for the transfer of defender Tomas Palacios are reportedly at risk of collapsing. This according to Italian outlet FCInterNews. They report that the two clubs cannot agree on the fee for a purchase option. Defender Tomas Palacios joined the Nerazzurri last summer. They reportedly paid a fee of over €10 million to sign him. However, so far Palacios has not exactly become a fixture in the Nerazzurri team. The young defender received only a couple of brief run-outs off the bench for Inter last summer. Then in January, Tomas Palacios joined Monza on loan. (Photo by) The intention for Palacios's loan at Monza was clearly for the young defender to receive more playing time. And the Argentine did certainly feature more than he had for Inter. However, at the same time, it was a difficult environment for Palacios. The Brianzoli were in a spiral towards relegation, and so it was often more experienced defenders who started. In any event, Tomas Palacios is back at Inter this summer after the end of his loan at the U-Power Stadium. Inter and Basel have been in talks for the Swiss side to sign Palacios on loan. However, according to FCInterNews, the negotiations are at risk of collapsing. The clubs have been unable to agree on a fee for a purchase option. Inter want to set it at €5-6 million, while Basel are hoping for lower.
