Cardinals' Donovan and Herrera shine in 12-2 rout of White Sox

CHICAGO (AP) — Brendan Donovan had four hits and Iván Herrera drove in four runs to back a strong start by Matthew Liberatore as the St. Louis Cardinals handed the Chicago White Sox their sixth straight loss, 12-2 on Tuesday night.
Alec Burleson went 3 for 5 for St. Louis, including his sixth home run, a solo shot in the seventh that made it 9-2. Victor Scott II — in the midst of a 5-for-35 slump — hit a two-run homer off Chicago position player Vinny Capra in the ninth.
Donovan drove in a run, hit his 21st double and scored twice in his third four-hit game this season and the fifth of his career.
Herrera had a two-run single in a five-run second inning. Michael A. Taylor took a home run away from Herrera leading off the fifth, but he came back to drive in a pair with a sixth-inning single.
Liberatore (4-6) gave up two runs on five hits in six innings for his first win since beating the Pirates on May 6.
Nolan Arenado singled to extend his hitting streak to seven games and spark the Cardinals' five-run second. Willson Contreras walked and later stole home — after a successful challenge — on a walk to Arenado to make it 6-1 in the fifth.
Edgar Quero and Capra drove in Chicago's runs.
St. Louis handed Chicago rookie starter Shane Smith (3-4) his worst defeat.

Nick Castellanos returns to Phillies lineup after benching for ‘inappropriate comment'

MIAMI (AP) — Nick Castellanos returned the the Philadelphia Phillies lineup for their game against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday after being benched the day before for 'an inappropriate comment' the outfielder made when he was pulled for a defensive replacement on Monday. 'It's gone. It's gone. We're good,' manager Rob Thomson said Wednesday of the benching, which ended Castellanos' streak of 236 consecutive starts. Castellanos played right field and singled in four at-bats against the Marlins on Monday before Johan Rojas replaced him in the bottom of the eighth with Philadelphia up 3-1. Max Kepler moved to right and Rojas played center. Thomson said after Monday's game he had intended to insert Rojas behind Philadelphia's right-handed pitching and indicated that could be the plan moving forward. Thomson added Wednesday that approach 'just depends on the situations.' When asked if he would be OK with taking Castellanos out in a similar situation on Wednesday, Thomson said, 'Probably not today.' The plan was also for Castellanos to only be benched for Tuesday's game, Thomson added. The Phillies lost that matchup 8-3. The 33-year-old Castellanos is in his fourth season with the Phillies, who are second in the NL East. He's hitting .278 with seven homers and 36 RBIs. Kylian Mbappé sidelined with illness for Real Madrid's Club World Cup opener

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Kylian Mbappé was sidelined for Real Madrid's Club World Cup opener on Wednesday as the star forward recovers from an illness. Coach Xabi Alonso told DAZN before the match against Al Hilal at Hard Rock Stadium that Mbappé had a 'fever, he was not feeling well. Hopefully back for the next one.' Recent signings Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen were in the lineup for the Spanish power against the Saudi Arabian club. The duo, both coming from the Premier League, could help Real Madrid reinforce a defense that's currently missing Antonio Rüdiger, David Alaba, Éder Militão, Ferland Mendy and Dani Carvajal. Canada soccer coach Casey Stoney proud to take part in ‘Pride Celebration Match'

Coach Casey Stoney says she is proud to take part in Canada Soccer's 'Pride Celebration Match' against Costa Rica at Toronto's BMO Field on June 27. 'Obviously the life that I live and the identity that I have, I think it's very important,' said Stoney, who has three kids with her partner Megan Harris, a former teammate with England's Lincoln Ladies. 'I think it's important that we celebrate difference, diversity in all ways. 'And Canada is so diverse,' added the former England captain. 'That's an amazing thing about the country. So, for Canada to be able to celebrate this and take part in this evening is something I'm hugely proud of. It's definitely something we will be celebrating as a team, as a collective, as an organization. 'It's sad, to be honest, the state of things south of the border. It doesn't exactly make me a happy person, especially since I actually reside there at the moment.' Stoney and her family make their home in San Diego, where she coached the NWSL Wave prior to the Canada job.
