Re-employment granted to HOD at Periyar University violating norms, allege professors

COIMBATORE: Breaking away from its Act and Statutes, the academic year for 2025-26 at Periyar University starts on June 30, instead of July 1. Professors from the university have alleged that this decision favours the head of the Department of Management Studies, for illegal re-employment for 2025-26.
A syndicate meeting, chaired by former Vice-Chancellor (V-C) R Jagannathan, was held on March 3, 2025. According to the syndicate minutes, accessed by TNIE, the retirement age for university teachers is 60.
According to the minutes of the meeting, V R Palanivelu, head of the Department of Management Studies will turn 60 on June 14, 2025, and therefore, will superannuate on June 30, 2025. The academic year runs from June 1 to March 31. Since his retirement falls within this academic year, he is eligible for re-employment until March 31, 2026.
After the syndicate meeting, the university issued a vacation declaration on April 27, from May 2 to June 30. But the university's Act and Statutes in 'Holidays and Vacations' paragraph states that full-time teachers of the university shall be entitled to a summer vacation of two months, from May 1 to June 30 (both days inclusive). Besides, it noted that the higher education department secretary, on May 22, informed registrars that the reopening date would be July 1.

Plan to increase Poondi reservoir's storage capacity pending for four years

CHENNAI: The Water Resources Department's (WRD) proposal to raise the water storage capacity of Sathyamoorthy Sagar reservoir, also known as the Poondi reservoir, has been pending for the past four years despite preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The department had planned to increase the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) by two feet – from the present 35 feet to 37 feet. This move, which would help increase the reservoir's storage from 3.231 tmcft to 3.971 tmcft, adding an extra 0.74 tmcft of water continues to remain on paper till now. Locals claim that besides increasing drinking water sources for the city, the project is also expected to mitigate flooding risks in a few villages located close to the reservoir. Speaking to TNIE, a senior WRD official said the DPR prepared last year estimated the project to cost Rs 552.60 crore. However, the report has still not been taken up with the state government since it is still under the consideration of the WRD. The official said that feasibility studies have already been done at a cost of Rs 48 lakh for the project. 'Work of surveying the existing ground level for the entire existing embankment, proposed foreshore bund area and reserved forest area adjoining the reservoir are completed. Once we get approval from the finance department, we submit the DPR and execute the task immediately,' the official added.

Admission for CDOE in Periyar University increases; four new courses introduced

The admission for the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) in Periyar University has increased this year and the university has received approval from the University Grants Commission Distance Education Bureau (UGC-DEB) to offer four new courses from this academic year. Periyar University, in the name of Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE), offered 145 courses through distance education from 2001. Following various allegations, UGC had cancelled the approval given for PRIDE in 2015. In 2020, PRIDE again received UGC approval for running 13 courses only, including four postgraduate courses. Later, the name of PRIDE was changed to CDOE. In 2021, the university launched the online degree programme in collaboration with private firms and in July 2024, the UGC barred Periyar University from offering these online degree courses for two academic years. Due to this, admissions came to a halt. In September 2024, the UGC committee inspected the university and in October, they were given permission to admit students for four PG courses: MCA, MA English, and Mathematics in distance education mode and MBA in online mode. The university administration took various steps to offer more courses, and last week, the UGC-DEB gave its approval to offer four more PG courses (MA in Tamil, History, Economics, and Sociology) through distance education mode. Officials attached to the CDOE said that last year, due to approval being provided to run five PG courses in October, only 54 students enrolled for the same. This year, as on July 31, 2025, the admission for these courses crossed 250. As four more courses were introduced this year, we expect admissions will increase further. Based on the request from the students, M.A. Sociology, history, and economics were offered both in Tamil and English mediums. Apart from these nine UG programmes, the CDOE offers four diploma programmes (one year) and eight certificate programmes (six months). Similarly, through 10 learning support centres in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, and Salem districts, admissions are offered for these courses, officials added. Meanwhile, in a release, Periyar University said that interested candidates can obtain detailed information and submit their applications through the official website of the University's CDOE at Admissions are being conducted on all working days, including Saturdays, at the university's CDOE campus. For further inquiries or assistance related to admissions, students shall contact the CDOE office at 0427-2345918, 2345258, or 94447-08425, the release added.

Crucial Sanjeevaiah Park RoB to materialise soon

HYDERABAD: The crucial RoB between Sanjeevaiah Park and Patigadda, connecting Necklace Road and SP Road in Secunderabad, is set to materialise soon, with GHMC and SCR agreeing to prioritise the works. Proposed as an alternative to Begumpet Road and Ranigunj X Roads, this link between Hyderabad and Secunderabad is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion. GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan told TNIE that tenders for the RoB, estimated to cost Rs 80 crore, would be floated soon as both GHMC and SCR agreed to take up the construction as a priority. The RoB is designed as a four-lane, 7.50-metre dual carriageway with a central median and footpaths on either side, spanning 600–700 meters. Over a decade ago, a similar RoB proposal costing Rs 28 crore hit a roadblock as HMDA and GHMC failed to release their 50% share (Rs 14 crore).
