Admission for CDOE in Periyar University increases; four new courses introduced
Periyar University, in the name of Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE), offered 145 courses through distance education from 2001. Following various allegations, UGC had cancelled the approval given for PRIDE in 2015. In 2020, PRIDE again received UGC approval for running 13 courses only, including four postgraduate courses.
Later, the name of PRIDE was changed to CDOE. In 2021, the university launched the online degree programme in collaboration with private firms and in July 2024, the UGC barred Periyar University from offering these online degree courses for two academic years. Due to this, admissions came to a halt.
In September 2024, the UGC committee inspected the university and in October, they were given permission to admit students for four PG courses: M.Com, MCA, MA English, and M.Sc Mathematics in distance education mode and MBA in online mode. The university administration took various steps to offer more courses, and last week, the UGC-DEB gave its approval to offer four more PG courses (MA in Tamil, History, Economics, and Sociology) through distance education mode.
Officials attached to the CDOE said that last year, due to approval being provided to run five PG courses in October, only 54 students enrolled for the same. This year, as on July 31, 2025, the admission for these courses crossed 250. As four more courses were introduced this year, we expect admissions will increase further. Based on the request from the students, M.A. Sociology, history, and economics were offered both in Tamil and English mediums. Apart from these nine UG programmes, the CDOE offers four diploma programmes (one year) and eight certificate programmes (six months). Similarly, through 10 learning support centres in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, and Salem districts, admissions are offered for these courses, officials added.
Meanwhile, in a release, Periyar University said that interested candidates can obtain detailed information and submit their applications through the official website of the University's CDOE at https://pride.periyaruniversity.ac.in/pucdoe/ODLRegister. Admissions are being conducted on all working days, including Saturdays, at the university's CDOE campus. For further inquiries or assistance related to admissions, students shall contact the CDOE office at 0427-2345918, 2345258, or 94447-08425, the release added.

Govt announces discount on trade licence renewal for shops using Odia on signboards
Bhubaneswar: To promote use of Odia language in public spaces, the Odisha govt has announced a 5% discount on trade license renewal fees for shops and commercial establishments that use Odia script on their signboards. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The housing and urban development department issued a notification on Wednesday to ensure compliance with the Orissa Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956, which mandates the use of Odia on signboards. Citing Rule 32 of the 1958 Rules framed under the Act, the govt reiterated that every business outlet must display its name prominently in Odia script. "To promote and protect the rich cultural and linguistic heritage of Odisha, the state govt shows its strong commitment and helps the public who do not understand any other language or script except Odia," read the notification. All municipal corporations, municipalities, and urban local bodies (ULBs) in the state will ensure that shops and commercial establishments in their areas are using Odia billboards. Official sources said despite repeated directives in the past, many establishments continue to flout the rule by using only English or other scripts. The latest circular warns that strict action will be taken against violators while offering a financial incentive to encourage compliance. "All shop owners and business operators are hereby directed to prominently use Odia in at least 60% of the signages. Non-compliance will attract penal action," the order stated. "To encourage more shops and business establishments to use Odia scripts, the govt has offered a 5% discount on the renewal of their trade licenses. The discount can be availed on the SUJOG and portals," it read. Urban local bodies have been instructed to strictly enforce the rule across their jurisdictions and submit a report about adherence within the next 60 days. The govt's decision has been welcomed by language activists, who have long demanded stricter implementation of the policy to safeguard the identity and dignity of Odia language.

Stalin woos youth, says DMK govt working for their uplift
Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin made a strong pitch to woo youth towards DMK in the upcoming assembly elections. He announced govt would start giving laptops to college students, countering AIADMK's charges of DMK halting the free laptop scheme. "Youth are the foundation of Tamil society. Primary goal of the Dravidian model govt is to enable growth of youth. This govt is for the youth," Stalin said on Wednesday after distributing appointment orders to around 2,300 youth recruited through state municipal administration department. "Since education alone is not enough, govt is creating job opportunities as well," Stalin said, adding that more than one lakh youth were given jobs through TNPSC, TRB and TNUSB, more than three lakh jobs were provided through Naan Mudhalvan scheme while another 2.65 lakh got employment through job fairs organised by labour department. As a result of 941 MoUs signed over the past four years, attracting 10lakh crore in investments, more than two lakh jobs have been generated, he said. Stalin said govt was also creating a conducive environment for attracting investments, which spurs economic growth resulting in job creation to benefit youth. "Peaceful ambience, proper maintenance of law and order, skillful youth, requisite infrastructure and schemes rolled out with foresight are helping TN remain on top," he said. Efforts have begun for generation of more jobs in Dravidian model govt 2.0 too after 2026, he added. Political analyst A Ramasamy said such initiatives consolidate DMK's support base. "Schemes such as Naan Mudhalvan mainly attract students from economically disadvantaged groups. These programmes targeting youth are helping the party consolidate its base," he said. However, professor and economist Krishna Raj said the job figures required closer scrutiny. "Filling one lakh govt vacancies is good. But where are the remaining jobs that were created? If these are in the industrial or informal sector, they may lack social security, insurance or benefits," he said.
