Stalin woos youth, says DMK govt working for their uplift

Time of India5 hours ago
Chennai: Chief minister
M K Stalin
made a strong pitch to woo youth towards
DMK
in the upcoming assembly elections. He announced govt would start giving laptops to college students, countering AIADMK's charges of DMK halting the free laptop scheme.
"Youth are the foundation of Tamil society. Primary goal of the Dravidian model govt is to enable growth of youth. This govt is for the youth," Stalin said on Wednesday after distributing appointment orders to around 2,300 youth recruited through state municipal administration department.
"Since education alone is not enough, govt is creating job opportunities as well," Stalin said, adding that more than one lakh youth were given jobs through TNPSC, TRB and TNUSB, more than three lakh jobs were provided through Naan Mudhalvan scheme while another 2.65 lakh got employment through job fairs organised by labour department.

"For the first time, sports quota in employment was given in TN facilitating jobs for 84 youth," he said. As a result of 941 MoUs signed over the past four years, attracting 10lakh crore in investments, more than two lakh jobs have been generated, he said.
Stalin said govt was also creating a conducive environment for attracting investments, which spurs economic growth resulting in job creation to benefit youth. "Peaceful ambience, proper maintenance of law and order, skillful youth, requisite infrastructure and schemes rolled out with foresight are helping TN remain on top," he said.
Efforts have begun for generation of more jobs in Dravidian model govt 2.0 too after 2026, he added.
Political analyst A Ramasamy said such initiatives consolidate DMK's support base. "Schemes such as Naan Mudhalvan mainly attract students from economically disadvantaged groups. These programmes targeting youth are helping the party consolidate its base," he said. However, professor and economist Krishna Raj said the job figures required closer scrutiny. "Filling one lakh govt vacancies is good. But where are the remaining jobs that were created? If these are in the industrial or informal sector, they may lack social security, insurance or benefits," he said.

Govt removed LS question on mine auction, claims Cong MP

NEW DELHI: A controversy erupted on Wednesday after Congress MP KC Venugopal accused govt of removing a Lok Sabha question on the auction of 13 offshore mining blocks around Arabian and Andaman seas at the last minute, alleging it wanted to evade answering whether the socio-economic impact assessment (SIA) was done prior to the auction, which would have exposed its "dubious mining policy". Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Terming it "procedural manipulation" by the Centre, he said the question, listed by BJP MPs Balabhadra Majhi and Aparajita Sarangi, was the first starred one for question hour on Wednesday. It asked govt to name shortlisted candidates for 13 mining blocks, the number of fishing villages within 20 nautical miles and whether SIA was done for each. The MP said govt had uploaded the question in the public domain but it "miraculously vanished" ahead of proceedings. He said, "What forced this abrupt deletion? Who is govt trying to protect? Was it because govt's dubious offshore mining policy was about to be exposed...?" tnn

BJP calls Rahul ‘director' of Congress' protest ‘drama' in Delhi

1 2 Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao on Wednesday termed the Congress ' protest in Delhi as a mere 'drama' aimed at misleading the BC community in Telangana. Addressing the media at Ramagudam, he described Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi as the 'director' of this drama and participants as 'actors'. Rao alleged that BC reservations would be reduced to only 32% if the govt provides 10% quota for Muslims. Reminding that it was the Congress that made the Kamareddy BC declaration and introduced a BC reservation bill in the assembly, he questioned why the Congress govt is now unable to implement it in Telangana. He also pointed out that Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah was also present at the Kamareddy BC declaration meeting. "Instead of heading to Delhi to stage a dharna, Revanth Reddy should question Siddaramaiah about the implementation of BC reservations in Karnataka," he said. Rao accused the state govt of blaming the Centre for its own failure to implement the promised reservations. "The previous YS Rajasekhar Reddy govt provided 4% reservations to Muslims in education and employment. This 4% quota issue is still pending in the court. However, Congress and BRS adopted appeasement politics by extending political reservations, which led to Muslims winning 35 of the 50 councillor seats in the GHMC elections, thereby depriving genuine BC leaders of contesting elections," he claimed. Rao accused the Congress of lacking sincerity in implementing the promised 42% BC quota and of making baseless allegations against the Modi govt to cover up its own failures. "Let us do justice to BCs together. If the Congress is sincere about implementing 42% reservation to BCs in total without reducing any share, the BJP is ready to work with them," he said.

SC allows use of Stalin's name in TN schemes, says other govts do it too

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Wednesday said naming of welfare schemes after political netas was all pervasive in states and at Centre and ruled that no exception could be taken to Tamil Nadu govt's 'Ungaludan Stalin' scheme, which translates into 'Your's Stalin'. Setting aside Madras HC's July 31 interim order restraining use of names of political personalities in any govt scheme in TN, which goes to polls in April-May next year, a bench of Chief Justice Bhushan R Gavai, and Justices K Vinod Chandran and N V Anjaria penalised petitioner before the HC, AIADMK MP C Ve Shanmugam, with Rs 10 lakh. Dictating the order in open court after a more than hour-long hearing on appeals filed by DMK and TN govt, CJI Gavai said, "Launching of schemes in the name of political netas is a phenomenon practised throughout the country. The Tamil Nadu govt has submitted a list of 45 welfare schemes (launched by states and Union govt) named after various political netas. We do not wish to name the schemes in order to cause embarrassment to political parties. " While directing the AIADMK MP to deposit Rs 10 lakh within a week with the TN govt for utilisation in welfare schemes for the underprivileged, the CJI said, "Time and again we have observed that political battles are to be fought in the electoral arena. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brigade™ Insignia. 3, 4 & 5 BHK Starting at ₹3.39 Cr* Brigade Group Learn More Undo Courts are not the place to fight political battles." Interestingly, the CJI-led bench withdrew Shanmugam's writ petition before the HC to the SC and dismissed it terming it as "fully misconceived and an abuse of the process of law" for singling out the TN scheme and not challenging similar schemes prevalent in other states and at Centre. It allowed appeals of DMK and TN govt to set aside the HC order. DMK was represented by senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and P Wilson. Rohatgi said SC had permitted use of photographs of the President, PM, CM and cabinet ministers in public advertisements to generate awareness among citizens about welfare schemesand that no political party in office has been immune to this phenomenon. For TN, senior advocate A M Singhvi supported the contentions of the party and said the scheme was meant to set up camps in every nook and corner of the state to enable and facilitate people of TN to avail full benefits of existing welfare schemes. Wilson said the AIADMK MP had approached Election Commission with the same allegation on July 21 for action against DMK and three days later, moved the HC alleging that EC was not taking action. Senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for the AIADMK MP, attempted to convince the court that a conjoint reading of a series of orders passed by SC on the issue took one to the conclusion that no welfare scheme could be named after political netas. After imposing a cost of Rs 10 lakh on Shanmugam, the bench said if the amount was not paid by the MP within a week, he would be liable for contempt of court proceedings.
