‘My First Ex-Husband': A Play About Relationships Gone Wrong And Finding The Courage To Flee

'Love is an untamed force,' writes Paulo Coelho. 'When we try to control it, it destroys us. When we try to imprison it, it enslaves us. When we try to understand it, it leaves us feeling lost and confused.'
Even when devastating, love can still be funny. A this-is-too-surreal-to-be-real kind of funny. In her new play, My First Ex Husband, Joy Behar delves into the rocky waters of relationships, love, sex and what leads people to get divorced.
After spending hours interviewing an eclectic group of women over the course of twelve years, she found both humor and heart in their true stories. They share devastating, inspiring, poignant and funny reflections about the struggle to leave their marriages and give up what up they know. Even if their relationships are toxic, to begin anew is scary.
The play features candid tales of infidelity, like the husband seeking his wife's blessing to have sex on the side. One recounted her survivalist ex's extreme frugality like using Entenmann's pie plates for hub caps or bringing cats into the house to heat up the place. Then there was the guy with an unrelenting and insatiable appetite for sex that could never be satisfied.
Behar shaped the stories into monologues that are performed by a rotating cast, which currently includes Veanne Cox, Carolyn McCormick, Andrea Navedo and Jackie Hoffman. Directed by Randal Myler, the 80-minute production is playing Off Broadway at MMAC Theater. The actors read the monologues from a podium.
For Emmy-nominated Hoffman, whose credits include Only Murders in the Building, Feud: Betty and Joan and a slew of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, On The Town, The Addams Family, Xanadu, Hairspray, and Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish, performing in the show is a true joy. And, she says, 'The joy is Joy Behar.'
Plus after being in the show makes her value her husband even more. 'I've always appreciated my husband,' says Hoffman. 'But hearing these monologues put that appreciation into overdrive and made me appreciate him even more.'
Jeryl Brunner: What went through your mind when you got word about your being in My First Ex-Husband?
Jackie Hoffman: It seemed like a cool clique to be a part of. I'm among great actresses and comedians. And it seemed like an easy gig. I was wrong about that.
Brunner: It is said that truth is stranger than fiction. And what surreal experiences these women have experienced. What do you wish you could say to them?
Hoffman: One of the monologues that I do involves a woman who 'escaped' an oppressive culture. I'd congratulate her and tell her I admire her courage. In general, I'd congratulate all of these women for moving on
Brunner: How would you describe My First Ex Husband?
Hoffman: [The play contains] stories of marriage and divorce that will exhaust your emotions. With a lot of laughs.
Brunner: You play so many great roles on television, film and in animated series. And there's all your incredible theater work. What keeps you coming back to the stage?
Hoffman: The audiences keep me alive and on my toes. Particularly with this show. It's an active relationship with the audience and each audience is different. I can't phone it in. Since telling these stories, I've become more passionate about the women I'm portraying. They have their own kind of fire.

Tom Cruise Sets Guinness World Record For Death-Defying 'Mission: Impossible' Stunt

Tom Cruise's quest to become America's most death-defying stuntman continues to pay off. The Oscar-nominated actor has spent the last couple of decades primarily focused on his action-packed 'Mission: Impossible' films — and just set a Guinness World Record for one of the most daring stunts in the series. The British institution announced Thursday that Cruise now holds the title for 'most burning parachute jumps by an individual' for leaping out of a helicopter 16 times before lighting his chute on fire in the latest franchise installment, 'The Final Reckoning.' 'Tom doesn't just play action heroes — he is an action hero!' wrote Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief at Guinness World Records. 'A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do.' Cruise and Paramount Pictures both posted behind-the-scenes footage of the stunt on social media. Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie can be seen plotting out logistics with the stunt coordinators and acknowledging the danger before Cruise attempts his jump. The stunt was filmed in the Drakensberg, South Africa. 'What I'm going to do is, I'm going to be deploying,' says Cruise in the footage, shot during a production meeting on location. 'If this is twisted while it's burning, I'm going to be spinning and burning. I have to kick out of the twist and then ignite within 10 seconds.' The result onscreen shows Cruise's character, Ethan Hunt, forced to cut the burning nylon tatters free to deploy a reserve chute at the last second. The stunt was shot with a chute that was soaked in fuel to light on fire. Over the course of his films, Cruise has run along the exterior of the 163-floor Burj Khalifa in Dubai ('Ghost Protocol'), harnessed himself to an airplane during takeoff ('Rogue Nation') and base-jumped into a canyon after riding off of a cliff ('Dead Reckoning'). 'Tom is no stranger to record breaking,' Glenday wrote Thursday. Cruise does indeed hold another Guinness title for 'most consecutive $100-million-grossing movies' for an actor, for the 11 films between 'Jack Reacher' (2012) and 'Final Reckoning.' The latter hit theaters in late May and has grossed nearly $400 million worldwide. HBO Releases Trailer for 'Surviving Ohio State' Documentary

Source: Getty Images A new HBO documentary is set to pull the curtain back on one of the darkest chapters in Ohio State University's history. Surviving Ohio State , produced by George Clooney and directed by Oscar and Emmy winner Eva Orner, premieres June 17th on HBO and will stream on Max. The project has been in development for years and features interviews with several former Buckeye athletes who say they were abused by Dr. Richard Strauss during his time as a university physician from 1978 to 1998. RELATED: Buckeyes Visit the White House, JD Vance Fumbles Trophy [PHOTOS] The trailer, which dropped June 5th, gives a preview of what's to come: firsthand accounts from survivors, including former All-American wrestler and UFC champ Mark Coleman. The film also features stories from Adam and Michael DiSabato, Will Knight, Al Novakowski, Rockey Ratliff, Dan Ritchie, and Mike Schyck; athletes whose names many in the OSU community will recognize. Strauss died by suicide in 2005. By then, he had already faced years of internal complaints that largely went ignored. Though the State Medical Board of Ohio opened an investigation in 1996, it stalled and was quietly closed in 2002 without any disciplinary action. A deeper, public acknowledgement of the abuse didn't begin until 2018, when new complaints surfaced and the university launched an independent investigation. That uncovered abuse allegations from more than 170 students. RELATED: LeBron James to Receive Honorary Doctorate from Ohio State While Ohio State was not involved in the production, the university remains at the center of the story. The documentary is based in part on a 2020 Sports Illustrated article by Jon Wertheim, who also serves as an executive producer. The film will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on Monday. Tramell Tillman could make Emmy history as the first Black Best Drama Supporting Actor winner

In 2015, Viola Davis won the Best Drama Actress Emmy for How to Get Away with Murder, becoming the category's first Black winner. That left one acting category that had yet to produce a Black champ: Best Drama Supporting Actor. Ten years later, that remains the case — even the short form acting categories, which were created in 2016 and consolidated into one in 2024, have awarded Black performers — but that could finally change in September with Severance star Tramell Tillman. Tillman is currently in third place in Gold Derby's Best Drama Supporting Actor odds, trailing Walton Goggins (The White Lotus) and Severance costar John Turturro. Tillman is the only Black performer in the top seven. Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Sam Rockwell (The White Lotus), and Patrick Schwarzenegger (The White Lotus) round out the predicted field. More from GoldDerby 'Forever' star Lovie Simone on traveling back to a 'nostalgic' time for Netflix's teenage romance show Kristen Kish dishes on Season 22 of 'Top Chef,' Emmys, and the show's global impact: 'It's all driven by the fans' New 'Freakier Friday' trailer, Mia Goth set for 'Star Wars: Starfighter,' Samuel L. Jackson heads to Taylor Sheridan's 'NOLA,' and the rest of today's top stories Tillman was not nominated for the first season in 2022, not surprising for an unknown actor on a new show. Severance received 14 nominations for Season 1 and the Best Drama Series frontrunner is expected to expand this year. If Tillman makes the cut amid a possible deluge by White Lotus dudes, a win — and a historic one at that — is certainly not out of the question. The Apple TV+ drama was bigger than ever in Season 2, and Tramell got to shine even brighter as his Lumon stooge Seth Milchick faced a crisis of confidence, leading to his instantly viral line, "Devour feculence." Oh, and there was the whole Choreography and Merriment marching band dance. It also doesn't hurt that the actor has brought his unique line deliveries to Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. SEE The ultimate oral history of Severance Season 2 It's not surprising Turturro is ahead of Tillman in the odds. He's a bigger name and a past winner who was nominated for Season 1 and had meaty material early in Season 2 before a diminished presence in the back half. Tillman had a consistent presence and arc throughout the season, ending with a bang with the aforementioned dance sequence (Turturro was MIA in the finale). And voters have shown through the years that when they're paying attention to a show — and there's no reason to think they're not paying attention to Severance — the underdog can topple the "obvious" frontrunner or bigger name (see: Jodie Comer beating her heavily predicted Killing Eve co-star Sandra Oh). Of course, Goggins is the frontrunner, not Turturro. And taking down The White Lotus, an acting branch fave, will be tougher. Formally established in 1970, Best Drama Supporting Actor has seen 13 Black actors receive 23 nominations over the years. 2021 was the last year with a Black nominee — and there were a record three: Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian), O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid's Tale), and Michael K. Williams (Lovecraft Country), who died shortly after voting ended. They lost to Tobias Menzies (The Crown). There have been POC nominees since then, however, with Squid Game stars Park Hae-soo and O Yeong-su in 2022, The White Lotus' Will Sharpe, who is half-Japanese, in 2023, and Shōgun duo Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira in 2024.
