Arsenal legend, 40, comes out of retirement for 30-min cameo in anniversary match saying ‘I'm halfway in shape'
The defender had a lengthy career but only featured for three clubs - Arsenal, Werder Bremen and Hannover.

His youth career was spent at German regional side TSV Pattensen 1890, who celebrated 135 years as a club this week.
To mark the occasion they held a friendly against Hannover, losing 3-0.
Mertesacker lined up for the semi-pro side - marking his football comeback after retiring in 2017.
The centre-back started the match but lasted just 30 minutes.
He said ahead of kick-off: "I'm halfway in shape."
Mertesacker played down his chances of a permanent stay, adding: "That's out of the question for me. But my passport is still with TSV, I think."
The German is still tied down to Arsenal as director of the club's academy.
Mertesacker played 221 games for the club between 2011 and 2018 before moving into a coaching role with the Gunners' youth teams.
He previously revealed his plans for the academy, stating: "I believe as an academy we should be in a position to provide those players for the first team in the future.
"I am really conscious that alignment means as well that once we get more successful and get back into the Champions League, that is the level for our players to be at.
"With the tweaks we are making [in the academy] and becoming younger by acquiring talent from the outside to become younger, this is a message to the academy: we need to be world leading.
"To become that we are on a journey. How close are we? I'm not sure.
"We're competing with the best academies in England but also in Europe and the world. I think we're in a good position, but ready to do more."

Manchester United make Joshua Zirkzee transfer decision amid Napoli interest
Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee is on Napoli's shopping list this month, but the Red Devils have already come to a decision on his future. The Serie A champions are in the market for a new striker after a frustrating injury to Romelu Lukaku in pre-season which is set to keep him sidelined for around three months. Zirkzee is one of a number of options they like the look of, with Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta being another. The Dutchman was used regularly by Ruben Amorim last season, making 49 appearances in all competitions, but he has fallen down the pecking order over the summer. Manchester United have completely revamped their forward line, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko coming in. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. That looks likely to become the first choice front three, with Zirkzee an option off the bench or in rotation for the number 10 or centre forward roles. However, despite being more of a squad player than a starter, Manchester United are keen to keep hold of him and do not intend to sell him this summer, reports transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. Romano reports that Amorim and the Manchester United board came to the decision to keep hold of Zirkzee 'months ago' and no talks have been held over a move. The Netherlands international signed a five-year contract when he arrived at Old Trafford from Bologna in a £36.5m move last year. The former Bayern Munich man has made no suggestion that he would be interested in a move away himself, but may have been concerned on Sunday that he was left on the bench in the defeat to Arsenal. The Red Devils played well but lost 1-0 to the Gunners at Old Trafford, with Mason Mount starting in the front three with Cunha and Mbeumo. Sesko came off the bench to make his debut, but Zirkzee remained an unused substitute despite United chasing the game. More Trending Zirkzee may be down the pecking order, but he is not as far down as Rasmus Hojlund, who was not in the Manchester United squad at all on Sunday. This would likely be a loan move with an option to buy the 22-year-old next summer, which Hojlund is reportedly now open to after initially being keen to stay and fight for his place. Revealed: When Chelsea's swoop for Xavi Simons 'is set to be completed' with RB Leipzig's Bundesliga opener against Bayern Munich just days away
Chelsea are reportedly now just days away from completing the signing of RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons. The Blues have been in talks with the Dutchman's camp for weeks and are believed to have already agreed personal terms. But Leipzig are yet to receive a bid from the Club World Cup Champions for Simons, who is valued at around £60million by the Bundesliga side. It seems an offer is now imminent however, with Chelsea hopeful of completing a deal for the highly-rated 22-year-old after the beginning of the German top-flight this weekend. Simons' last appearance for Leipzig is set to come on Friday at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich, according to Florian Plettenberg, then the transfer will likely be completed. The former Barcelona wonderkid, who netted 10 league goals last season, is thought to be keen on a move to Enzo Maresca 's side. If the move does indeed come off, Simons will face fierce competition for his place when he arrives at Stamford Bridge. Despite already boasting Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto and youngster Tyrique George on the wing, the Blues have strengthened their frontline this summer with the signings of Jamie Gittens and the promising Estevao. And they're also working on a deal to bring in Manchester United outcast Alejandro Garnacho after he was told to find himself a new club by Ruben Amorim. The Argentine, 21, is understood to have agreed personal teams with Chelsea but there remains a gap in the two clubs' valuation of him. The Blues will likely have to chop players from their bloated squad before they splash out the £60m United desire for Garnacho. Todd Boehly and co are reportedly working on doing just that, with up to nine players at risk of being sold by Chelsea before the transfer window closes early next month. It's thought the club are trying to arrange sales or loans for Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Renato Veiga, Alex Disasi, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell, Tyrique George and Raheem Sterling. Following an underwhelming loan spell at Arsenal last term, Sterling is said to be keen on a permanent move away from the club but his £325,000-a-week contract is proving to be something of a stumbling block in transfer negotiations. Fulham, Crystal Palace and West Ham United are all interested in securing his signature, with the former England international favouring a move to a London-based club. Chelsea began their Premier League campaign last weekend with a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge against Palace, who had an Eberechi Eze free-kick disallowed in the first half by VAR. After the match, Enzo Maresca was critical of his side's toothless performance. 'We could have counter attacked better, we could have defended better, but it is only the first game of the season,' he said. 'For sure, slowly, slowly, we're going to be better. 'They (Palace) played about eight games (in pre-season). We played just two. We tried our best. We didn't lose a clean sheet.' The Blues travel east to face West Ham in a London derby on Friday evening.

Mikel Arteta told Arsenal should have signed £60m star instead of Noni Madueke
Mikel Arteta has been told Arsenal bought the wrong player when they signed Noni Madueke from Chelsea. Arsenal spent over £50m to sign England international Madueke from London rivals Chelsea. A number of Arsenal fans were underwhelmed by the signing after Madueke blew hot and cold at Stamford Bridge, scoring 20 goals in 92 appearances. Madueke started on the bench in Arsenal's Premier League opener against Manchester United before coming on for the final half an hour. Following his move to north London, the 23-year-old insisted he was desperate to 'repay the faith shown in him' by decision-makers at Arsenal. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. But former Chelsea midfielder and ex-Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha have questioned the signing of Madueke and believe Arsenal should have signed Eberechi Eze instead. Arsenal expressed interest in the Crystal Palace star but their north London rivals Tottenham are closing in on a deal worth around £60m. 'Why is Eze not going to Arsenal? Is it about money?' Burley asked on ESPN. 'I'm looking at Eze and Tottenham are a big club but they're not winning anything this season… 'I would have preferred Eze than Madueke. I look at Eze and those games that Arsenal play which are tight and they're not at their best – there's going to be a few of them this season if they're going to win the league. 'You need someone to unlock a defence and Eze is a player who can score goals, who can take players on under pressure and unlock a defence. 'He would have been absolutely perfect for that squad but it looks like he's going to Tottenham.' Onuoha added: 'Same, I totally agree. It's disappointing in some ways in my mind because we've heard the link to Arsenal. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'If Arsenal weren't linked you wouldn't think it because Spurs are in the Champions League and should be better this season. 'Without that Arsenal link it doesn't cross my mind. Spurs are a level about Palace but Eze has probably got another level above that and that's why I'm a little bit disappointed it looks like that's where he's going.' There was speculation Eze would miss Crystal Palace's Premier League opener against Chelsea on Sunday as he closes in on a move to Spurs. More Trending But the 27-year-old started the match and thought he had put Palace ahead with a powerful free-kick, only for the goal to be disallowed following a VAR check. Eze applauded the travelling fans after the Stamford Bridge stalemate, with many wondering whether he was bidding farewell to the Crystal Palace supporters. If Eze moves to Tottenham in the coming days, he could make his Spurs debut on Saturday in the huge Premier League clash against Manchester City. The north London side produced an impressive performance in Thomas Frank's second game in charge to beat Burnley 3-0 in their Premier League opener. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
