Upcoming top-class sports infrastructure reshapes urban planning in Ahmedabad clusters
Ahmedabad: The ripple effect of Ahmedabad's ambitious vision to potentially host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG) and 2036 Olympic Games here is now visible in the city's urban blueprint. As part of the plan for Olympic-ready infrastructure coming up in Manipur-Godhavi area, the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda) is redrawing neighbouring Shela's Town Planning Scheme 1, reallocating land to accommodate more parking space, and wider roads. In Manipur-Godhavi, the state govt is developing the South West Ahmedabad Sports Arena (SWASA), which falls under TP Scheme 429. "Shela's TP Scheme 1 shares its northern boundary with TP Scheme 429, where the sports complex is coming up. Infrastructure continuity is vital, hence the revision," revealed a senior Auda official. As a consequence more land is now being allocated for wider roads and improve parking facilities in neighbouring areas. "Specifically, nearly 60,000 sq m more land has been allocated for road networks in Shela's TP Scheme 1, taking the total to 4,55,559 sq m. Parking allocation, which previously stood at zero, now measures 32,617 sq m. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo An additional 4,079 sq m has been earmarked for an urban forest," a senior Auda official said. Carrying his late father's dream, Tirthank ready to take the pool at Junior Worlds
Assam swimmer Tirthank Pegu created a storm in the pool at the Junior National Aquatic Championships held early this month in Ahmedabad as he broke the U18 national record in 200m butterfly. Although it wasn't his primary event, he awed one and all with his impressive performance and will now look to continue his good show at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships to be held in Otopeni, Romania, from August 19-24 where he will be competing in two events — 200m freestyle and 400m individual medley. "For the world juniors, I am just preparing to give my personal best and I am looking forward to experiencing my first-ever international meeting," Pegu told TOI. While it will be a dream come true for the youngster, it's heartbreaking that his biggest motivator — his father Kunal — couldn't be around to witness the day. "It was during the 2024 Khelo India Youth Games when my father came down to Chenai to watch me compete when he had a heart attack in the hotel room and passed away," Pegu, who trains at Inspire Institute of Sport in Vijayanagar, Karnataka, recollected during a virtual interaction. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Vitauthority Learn More Undo "He was like my mentor and supported me in every single step. He always wanted me to become a great swimmer and was my inspiration." Despite the huge loss, Pegu went on to finish on the podium in a couple of events during the meet. "But after that event, the whole year, I couldn't perform to the best of my abilities because I wasn't at my best mental health," added the 18-year-old, who earlier trained at Delhi SAI under coach Partha Pratim Majumdar. "Later I came to IIS, and I improved a lot both mentally and physically. Most importantly, it helped me become a better person besides improving my swimming." At IIS, he has been training under Sandeep Sejwal and also takes a lot of inspiration from Sajan Prakash, who trains with them at IIS. "I also get motivated by watching David Popovici's races. He is very talented and at 18 years of age, he broke the world record. After watching him, I felt it's possible to do great things at a very young age," said Pegu, who is one of the two swimmers from Assam — the other being Jananjay Jyoti Hazarika — to be part of the India squad taking part in the world meet. Pegu has already achieved some great things in his young career and could have even earned a few more podium finishes during the junior nationals if not for the visa issues. "I was going to do five events in junior nationals, but because I had to reschedule my visa appointment from Aug 1 to Aug 4, I had to stay back in Delhi during the 200m and 400m events, which are my primary events," he added. Hopefully, nothing of that sort will happen in Europe as he looks to fulfil the long-cherished dream that his father nurtured when his son took to the pool at 4 years of age after seeing his uncle take a splash. And, with his feat, he wants to achieve something more than just medals and records. "I want to make people of the country see swimming as a proper sport and not something that you learn for survival. People should also choose swimming besides cricket, football or badminton," he remarked before signing off. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
