Agitating conservancy workers evicted from protest site, Oppn lashes out at ruling DMK
Opposing privatisation, the workers were protesting in front of Rippon Buildings, the headquarters of Chennai Corporation since August 1.
Chief Minister MK Stalin said his Dravidian model government would never compromise on the dignity of conservancy workers who work hard whether it rains or shines, and announced special initiatives for them.
After the Cabinet meeting led by Stalin here at the Secretariat, Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu told reporters that a special health scheme will be implemented for conservancy workers in view of occupational hazards they face.
In order to detect occupational diseases and treat workers, a separate health scheme will be implemented.
As many as 30,000 houses under a housing scheme, financial support for children of workers to pursue higher education, free breakfast for workers, ₹10 lakh to the kin of a worker if he/she dies in harness forms part of the six special initiatives.
Thennarasu appealed to workers to resume their work. The police action earlier came hours after the Madras High Court, said: "We hope and expect that in the name of agitation, the pavements/pathways roads shall not be allowed to be blocked." The workers have been opposing the privatisation of sanitation operations . AIADMK chief and Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition, Edappadi K Palaniswami strongly condemned the midnight police action against the workers. When Stalin was in opposition he staged 'dramas' urging permanent jobs for them. "No government in independent India has crushed the protest of ordinary sanitation workers like this. The government will have to provide answer for every drop of tears of workers," he said in a social media post.
TVK founder-actor Vijay hit out at the DMK government as 'fascist' for the police action against workers and he dubbed IT as inhuman and atrocious as workers, who protested peacefully for their rights, were detained midnight.
The workers are protesting seeking fulfillment of assurances made by the DMK when it was in opposition.
Why the assurance has not been honoured yet, Vijay asked. The workers should be provided alternative site to continue their protest.

Guv: Spike in discrimination, drugs, crime; DMK hits back

Chennai: A fresh bout of verbal sparring broke out between Raj Bhavan and DMK govt in TN, as Governor R N Ravi alleged state was grappling with "very serious challenges" including a spike in sexual offences and rising drug abuse, which drew a sharp rebuttal from the ruling party. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On the eve of Independence Day, Ravi said about 60% of TN youth study in govt-run schools and are mostly from poor and marginalized sections. "The standards of teaching and learning are sharply declining in these schools," he said. Citing the ASER (annual status of education report), he said more than 50% of high school students cannot do simple maths or read primary standards textbooks. "Public education in TN is in steady decline," he said. Students are merely passing with certificates, and without job opportunities, he said. Alleging that social and educational discrimination was on the rise, Ravi said dalits are physically assaulted and at times even killed for their attempt to share the common public space. "It is a matter of collective shame that even after 78 years of Independence, rampant humiliating social discrimination practices are prevalent in our state," he said. Ravi said according to national crime records bureau, about 20,000 suicides are reported from TN every year, more than double the national average. The suicides reflect the prevailing acute social, psychological, or economic distress in the society, he said. Ravi alleged that drug abuse, especially among youth, was sharply increasing, particularly synthetic drugs. He also alleged that there was a sharp increase in the incidents of sexual offences, especially Pocso cases. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "According to official data, there has been more than 56% increase in Pocso rape cases in 2024,'' he said. Rejecting Ravi's charges, municipal administration minister K N Nehru said data released by Union govt shows TN was ahead in social and economic parameters. He said TN govt has responded to these charges with data in the past. "The governor is lying, frustrated over the boycott of his Independence day tea party by DMK allies," he said. Nehru also dismissed the statement that Centre has been supporting the development of TN by providing 'substantial funding', which included 3lakh crore as grants-in-aid. "The last Union budget had no mention of TN," he said. School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said if Ravi was concerned about education of children in TN, he should urge Union govt to release pending funds for school education department.

Stalin, DMK allies to boycott governor's Independence Day reception

Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin has decided to boycott governor RN Ravi's reception hosted on the occasion of Independence Day, after the latter's scathing attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Thursday, alleging that the state is facing four major challenges– educational and social discrimination of the poor and marginalised; alarming rise in suicides; drug abuse among the youth and a steep rise in rape and other sexual offences against women and girls. MK Stalin (File photo) DMK's allies also announced that they will boycott the event to protest against the governor, who they alleged, was acting against the interests of the state. This is a fresh standoff, adding to an already sour relationship between the governor and the Tamil Nadu government. Since Ravi became the governor in 2021, he has been at loggerheads with the government over a host of issues by supporting policies of the BJP-led Centre such as NEP, NEET, walking out of the assembly without reading his customary speech and omitting portions of the speech prepared by the state, changing the name of Tamil Nadu to Tamizhagam in a public invitation released by the Raj Bhavan. However, it was his move of delaying bills passed by the state legislature that led the state government to move court against him based on which the Supreme Court in a landmark verdict on April 8, set deadlines for the President and governors to clear bills passed by state legislatures. The apex court also found governor Ravi's action of keeping bills pending illegal. Meanwhile, President Draupadi Murmu on May 13 had put forth 14 questions before the Supreme Court on the constitutionality of its April 8 verdict. 'The public education ecosystem in Tamil Nadu is in steady decline,' Ravi said in his customary speech delivered on the eve of Independence Day. 'The learning gap between the socially and economically marginalised and others is sharply widening. In a knowledge-based competitive world and economy driven by AI and advanced new technologies, the future of our poor and marginalised is grossly compromised. They are merely passing out with certificates without job opportunities for them.' In response, higher education minister Govi Chezhiaan said that the governor's actions as chancellor is the reason for many state universities functioning without vice chancellors. 'In protest against the governor's actions and his continuance to act against the interests of the people of Tamil Nadu, the chief minister will boycott the governor's tea party at the Raj Bhavan on August 15,' the higher education minister said in a statement. He added that as minister he will boycott the convocations of the Alagappa University and Thiruvalluvar University to be held on August 18 and 19. The governor has forwarded the Bill to establish Kalaignar (named after DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi) University in Kumbakonam to the President, to delay its establishment, the minister said. Despite obtaining a historic verdict from the apex court, which also gave assent to the nine Bills that the governor had kept pending, a BJP functionary, Kutty alias Venkachalapathy, moved the Madras high court, which stayed the operationalisation of the nine laws, he added. The governor in his speech said that every other day there are reports of walls being built in villages and schools separating Dalits from others. 'It is a matter of collective shame that even after 78 years of Independence, humiliating social discrimination practices are prevalent in Tamil Nadu,' Ravi said. Quoting data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) he said that about 20,000 people commit suicide every year in Tamil Nadu which translates into over 65 suicides every day. 'It is indeed shocking. It is the highest in the country. The national average is 12 suicides for one lakh population. In Tamil Nadu, it is over 26 – more than double…,' the governor said. 'According to official data, over 2,000 people especially the youth of Tamil Nadu commit suicide due to drug abuse every year.' He also raised the issue of sexual crimes against women. 'According to official data, there has been over 56% increase in POCSO rape cases in 2024,' the governor said. 'Incidents of molestation of women have jumped by over 33%. Our sisters and daughters are afraid and feel insecure to come out of their houses.' The governor said as chancellor he sees that women outnumber men in receiving higher education degrees. 'However, if our sisters and daughters are scared to come out of their houses, to pursue their dreams and enterprises, it will cast a dark shadow over our future,' he said. Allies of the ruling DMK government, Congress, CPI (M), CPI, Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK) and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) have announced they will boycott the governor's reception.
