
Regional rail connectivity can enhance supply chain
He said the development of rail infrastructure is important from a regional perspective, not just domestically, with the aim of connecting ASEAN member countries through a more strategic railway network.
'When we can connect via rail between these countries, first of all, it is regional connectivity and also very important in terms of supply chain security because the world today is experiencing various uncertainties and disruptions,' he said.
He told the media after the monthly assembly of the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the Raikan Kasih MADANI 2025 event, here today.
Loke said Malaysia, which is located in the middle of the strategic route of the Straits of Malacca and the South China Sea, has the advantage of being a link between western and eastern countries.
Therefore, he said the region should make full use of existing railways to improve connectivity.
'We hope that at the ASEAN level there is a consensus so that we can improve this connectivity. When we have improved this connectivity, of course other countries will also be interested, especially landlocked countries,' he said.
To realise the Pan-Asian Railway Network, Loke said Malaysia is committed to achieving a policy with Thailand that is more supportive of the development of the rail sector.
Loke said he would meet with Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Suriya Juangroongruangkit on May 2 to resolve several issues, including Malaysia's rail cargo services being able to cross borders and become a major mode in the future.
He said, for example, among the existing obstacles were certain restrictions on the movement of goods by rail between Malaysia and Thailand, where there were categories of goods that were not allowed to be transported by rail across borders.
'Things like this must be resolved so that we can reduce these barriers to enhance trade in ASEAN,'
Loke said Malaysia is the host of the ASEAN summit next month and the main agenda is to steer the region in facing the current challenges.
'The most important challenge at this time is that the increase in tariffs by the United States has made the global economy increasingly tense.
'What is important for ASEAN is to ensure that availability or the level of competitiveness remains high and to ensure that trade within ASEAN can be improved so that we can reduce trade dependence on only one market,' he said.
Therefore, Loke said MOT plays a major role in ensuring that trade between ASEAN can be improved through the implementation of policy instruments so that democratic red tape and restrictions within ASEAN can be reduced.
Loke said cooperation between Malaysia and Thailand is established through Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) and State Railway of Thailand (SRT) but what is important is government-to-government (G2G) cooperation.
The Pan-Asian Railway Network is also known as the Kunming-Singapore Railway Network, connecting the city of Kunming in China with Singapore, via several Southeast Asian countries.
It is a mega project that connects Southeast Asia with China and then to the European continent.
Malaysia plays a key role in the Pan-Asian Railway Network, particularly through the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) Project which connects the East and West Coasts of Peninsular Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR: Artificial intelligence must remain an assistive tool rather than a decision-maker according to former Federal Court judge Tan Sri Harmindar Singh Dhaliwal. He emphasized that any AI impacting individual rights requires rigorous testing and clear oversight before deployment. AI use cases must undergo testing for bias, reliability and transparency before adoption he added. He cautioned that AI's criminal justice application demands vigilance despite being powerful technology. We must always remain accountable he asserted regarding AI integration into justice systems. Approaching AI with eyes wide open prepares us to address risks and reap benefits he concluded. Colin Seow of Colin Seow Chambers provided Singapore's perspective on AI implementation. The Singapore Police Force uses AI in digital forensics to automatically sift seized devices for abuse material. This integration significantly improves investigation speed and accuracy he confirmed. AI deployment extends to Singapore's financial sector through the COSMIC platform he added. The Monetary Authority of Singapore launched COSMIC last year as a public-private data-sharing initiative. Major banks and financial institutions participate in this collaborative information sharing platform. AI analyses transaction patterns within COSMIC enabling proactive suspicious activity detection. Banks can flag concerning activities across institutions while safeguarding customer confidentiality he explained. Legislative changes support this initiative allowing information sharing strictly for crime prevention. The three-day ASEAN Law Forum featured fifty-eight speakers and moderators across fifteen sessions. Over three hundred participants from ASEAN and beyond attended the expert-led discussions. EPB cautiously optimistic of near-term prospects
KUALA LUMPUR: EPB Group Bhd remains cautiously optimistic on its near-term outlook, despite global trade uncertainties and input cost pressures. The group said its confidence is underpinned by a strong balance sheet, an expanding market presence and a clear execution strategy. 'The favourable Asean trade environment, supported by targeted fiscal and monetary policies across key markets, continues to present compelling opportunities for EPB in the food manufacturing and packaging solutions sector,' the one-stop food processing and packaging machinery solutions provider said. In the second quarter ended June 30, EPB posted a slightly higher net profit of RM2.6mil, or 0.70 sen per share, raising first-half (1H25) net profit by 35.2% to RM5.2mil, or 1.40 sen per share. Quarterly revenue jumped 40.2% to RM29.6mil, lifting 1H25 revenue 45% to RM56.9mil. As at July 31, EPB's order book stood at RM81.25mil, of which RM51.65mil is expected to be fulfilled in the second half of the financial year ending Dec 31, 2025 (FY25), and RM29.6mil in 1H26. Notably, over RM70.08mil of the current order book relates to the group's core food processing and packaging machinery segment, reaffirming its dominant contribution to EPB's revenue base. 'Our healthy order pipeline and improved project execution capabilities provide a solid foundation for the remainder of FY25. Malaysia targets ASEAN animation growth, unveils largest Riuh X ASEAN Festival
by NURNABIHAH DINI MALAYSIA is stepping up in pushing the animation industry as a viable export sector, with MyCreative Ventures Sdn Bhd and the National Film Development Corp Malaysia (FINAS) providing funding, production support as well as corporate partnership opportunities for the local creators. In a press conference today, Communication Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (picture) said both agencies will be instructed to go beyond providing funding by working closely with private sectors, as corporate backers begin to recognise the revenue potential of the creative industry, particularly in film and animation. 'The focus will be on creating synergies between corporate backers and creative producers, with MyCreative Ventures and FINAS facilitating in this matter,' he said. Fahmi added that FINAS is also working on initiatives to expand the export of Malaysian intellectual property (IP) to ASEAN countries. 'Malaysian animation like Upin and Ipin has already found strong audiences in Indonesia, while the local films have been well received in Vietnam and Cambodia. 'FINAS aims to build networks and facilitate the movement of Malaysian IP into the broader Asian market as a starting point,' he added. The press conference also highlighted Riuh X ASEAN Marketplace which will be held on Oct 22 to 25 at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur (KL) which will showcase over 200 retail brands, food vendors, stage performance from local artists and interactive workshops. The event will include the FrequenSEA Music Conference featuring musicians, producers and industry leaders from across ASEAN countries. In addition, the Riuh Gallery pop-up series will be launched on Oct 1 at selected Klang Valley locations presenting indie music, comedy, poetry and visual art performance. Ahead of the October programmes, Riuh Merdeka 2025 will be held on Aug 30 and 31 at Millennium Monument, Putrajaya with 30 hours of nonstop performance, family activities, showcases and fireworks.
