Choosing to say her farewells in Montreal, the city of her birth, made natural sense and she gave the sold-out crowd a thrilling finale before going down 6-2 3-6 6-4 to the former Olympic champion.
Once the clash was over, a montage of the best bits of her career was played on the screen and American world No.4 Jessica Pegula – the 2024 US Open finalist – paid her tributes.
A framed commemorative collage of photos from Bouchard's career was presented on court and the caption said: 'Congratulations Genie on an outstanding career. You will be missed, WTA.'
She was also given a Tennis Canada trophy and fans spelt out MERCI GENIE with red placards.

Bouchard, playing as a wildcard, had won her opening match in the tournament against Colombian Emiliana Arango 6-4 2-6 6-2 on Tuesday but this was a test too far in the end.
The 31-year-old will now switch her allegiances to the sport of Pickleball which is growing momentum and popularity in the States.
Bouchard, who had strapping on her left thigh, did well to keep it together during her speech but there was one point she came close to losing control.
She said: 'I think it's so special to play my last match in Montreal, on this court, in front of you guys.

'I remember being a little kid, sitting in these stands, hoping and dreaming that I would play on this court one day.
"I grew up playing on these courts and nearby. So, it feels like a full-circle moment to finish my career here.

'Tennis has given me so much. I am filled with so much gratitude for this sport and for the people who helped me along the way.
'I want to thank my family – mum, dad, my sisters and brother for their sacrifice and support. It's only because of that that I am standing here today.
'I want you to know when this crowd cheers for me, they're cheering for you guys, too. I wouldn't be here without you.
'Also to all the coaches, physios, trainers, everyone I've worked with in this whole journey.
"You all know who you are. Because of your hard work and help I was able to live out my dreams.
'How lucky am I to live out my dreams? So, thank you!'
Bouchard – named after the Duke of York, Prince Andrew's younger daughter Princess Eugenie – became the first player to represent Canada in a Grand Slam singles final when she made it to the 2014 Wimbledon final.

Eugenie Bouchard
It was a bittersweet experience as she was crushed 6-3 6-0 by Czech player Petra Kvitova in the Wimbledon final on Centre Court.
That same season she made the semi-finals of the Australian Open and French Open and reached the Last 16 of the US Open.
Two years ago, she achieved a career high by helping Canada win the Billie Jean King Cup Final in Seville.
Her career has been derailed by inconsistent play and injury, which included a serious shoulder surgery that kept her off the court for 17 months between 2021-2022.
There was also a lengthy lawsuit against the United States Tennis Association (USTA) after she suffered a concussion when she slipped and fell in a US Open locker room in 2015.
In February 2018, a jury decided Bouchard was partially at fault – it determined the USTA was 75 per cent to blame for the incident, with Bouchard 25 per cent to blame.
More people have gotten to know Bouchard in recent years from stunning beach swimsuit photoshoots – the most famous was for Sports Illustrated – than from tennis appearances.
Since her heyday, she has faded from the competitive arena and slumped to 1,062 in the world ranking due to inactivity.

A Swans insider told SunSport: 'The players love going to Gin & Juice after a win — and Snoop Dogg and Luca are invited to join. 'It's so uncanny we have a bar here that happens to share the same name as one of Snoop's biggest hits. It must have been written in the stars he'd turn out to be a Swan.' Meanwhile, the club are set to open their own pub in the city centre this autumn called The Swansea Jack — and are launching a beer in association with Snoop Dogg called 'Drop It Like It's Hops.' It is a pun on his 2004 hit Drop It Like It's Hot. The stars' involvement has captured the city's imagination and the club even commissioned local artist Hasan Kamil to paint a mural of the rapper inside the stadium. 2025 US Open: dates, schedule, seeds, how to watch on TV

Aug 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. Open is a hardcourt Grand Slam organised by the United States Tennis Association. The tournament was first held in 1881 and originally known as the U.S. National Championships. Here is what you need to know about the year's fourth and final major of the year: * The 145th edition of the U.S. Open will run from August 24 to September 7. * The U.S. Open is held in Flushing Meadows, New York. * The three main showcourts are the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium and Grandstand. * Arthur Ashe Stadium (capacity: 23,771) is named after the only Black man to win singles titles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Australian Open. He was also a prominent human rights activist. * Louis Armstrong Stadium (capacity: 14,053) was named after jazz great Armstrong who lived a few blocks from the venue until he died in 1971. It was opened during the 2018 event to replace the 1978 stadium of the same name and has a retractable roof like the main showcourt. * Grandstand (capacity: 8,125) was first used at the U.S. Open on August 29, 2016, the opening day of that year's tournament. * The top-ranked players automatically enter the main draw, with 32 seeds announced prior to the draw, to ensure they do not meet in the early rounds. Seedings are based on world rankings determined by the points players collect on the tour. * Italian Jannik Sinner, who won his fourth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in July, is the men's world number one. He is chasing back-to-back U.S. Open titles. * Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, a three-times major winner, is the top-ranked women's player and the defending champion. * Novak Djokovic will resume his quest for a record-extending 25th men's Grand Slam singles title, while Spanish world number two and 2022 champion Carlos Alcaraz chases a sixth major crown. * Organisers also hand out wildcards to local hopes and notable players who have dropped down the rankings. * A new format in the mixed doubles is being introduced this year, with the event featuring many big-name singles players as it will be taking place over two days in the week before the main competition starts. Horse Aye Eye produces 'absolutely ridiculous' last-to-first run to win on debut

The thoroughbred named after Artificial Intelligence was a long way behind the others at the start, but found another gear in the Saratoga stretch for jockey Javier Castellano A horse called Aye Eye finished with a storming last-to-first run to snatch the spoils on debut at Saratoga. ‌ The Joseph Orseno trainee seemed to have no chance when he completely blew the start in the Maiden Special Weight over six furlongs on Friday. ‌ As all of his seven opponents broke sharply from the gates, jockey Javier Castellano could only look on as Aye Eye struggled to go the early gallop. ‌ Escape Hall, one of the leading fancies, won the scrap for the lead as the runners motored towards the home turn. Footage shared by the New York Racing Association showed how Robert Cotran-owned colt Aye Eye was not even in the picture at that point. "Aye Eye is well back," said the commentator Frank Mirahmadi, with the 26-1 entrant seemingly having no chance at all. But at the top of the stretch, Castellano's red silks on the longshot were not quite so far behind, with around 12 lengths between the pair and front-runner Escape Hall. After going a strong pace from the outset, the juvenile started to tire and Bod Beach took over with the winning post in sight. However caller Mirahmadi was shocked as Aye Eye suddenly appeared on the scene and shot past for a cosy success by a length-and-a-half. ‌ "On the inside, could that possibly be Aye Eye?" he said. "What an absolutely ridiculous rally to victory. Aye Eye, wow!" Many racing fans were equally impressed and took to social media to share their thoughts in the incredible performance. ‌ "He hit the side of the gate and was 19 lengths back after 1/4, 12 back after 1/2, 7 1/2 back at 1/8 pole and won going away," wrote one. A second person said: "Wow! That horse was running like he was late for dinner!! Well done!" And a third added: "Look at em go!!!!" ‌ Aye Eye's win comes just days after Roger Varian-trained newcomer Raameee charged home in similar fashion in a race at Kempton Park. Unlike the American horse, the juvenile was well-fancied, setting out as the 10-11 favourite in the Vronti Unibet Zero% Mission Novice Stakes on Wednesday. "He's a great big horse, very immature last year as a two-year-old and is only just getting going now," said Varian. "He's a great advert for being patient with a horse."
