Yang Zi is nominated at Magnolia Awards again

Yahoo28-05-2025
28 May - Yang Zi has been nominated yet again at the Magnolia Awards, becoming the youngest nominee in the Best Actress category.
The actress, who is nominated for her costume drama, "Flourished Peony", will be competing with the likes of Crystal Liu ("The Tale of Rose"), Ma Yili ("To the Wonder"), Song Jia ("She and Her Girls") and Yan Ni ("Romance in the Alley").
Despite the nomination, many expressed scepticism about Yang Zi having a chance to win, seeing that the drama she is nominated for is the one with the lowest rating score among other contenders, having received only 7.8 stars out of 10 compared to, for example, "She and Her Girls" rating of 9.6 or "To the Wonder" rating of 8.9.
However, despite the lower possibility due to rating score, it is noted that Yang Zi still held her own record for being the first post-90s actress to be nominated in the Magnolia Awards for two consecutive years.
Last year, the actress was nominated for her performance in "Lost You Forever".

Silence Wang's team retracts hit song "Ring of Time" over "original performer" debate

30 Jul - Zhang Bichen and Silence Wang's camps found themselves in dispute with one another regarding the copyright of the song "Ring of Time" because of an influencer. The whole issue sparked after netizens found a video from an influencer who covers songs as her social media content, stating that Zhang Bichen was the original singer of the song, which was a part of the Zanilia Zhao's hit 2015 drama, "The Journey of Flower". This caused dissatisfaction among Silence Wang's fans, seeing that the singer was the one who wrote and composed the song. On 25 July, Wang's team posted on Weibo stating that they had no intention of getting involved in the controversy and had immediately tried to communicate and clarify the full story, hoping to reduce negative public opinion. However, as the situation escalated and they found themselves continually pulled into the centre of the storm, they decided to withdraw authorisation for the song and would temporarily not permit any performances of the song. Shortly after, Zhang Bichen's studio released an official statement via Weibo, stating that Zhang's is the original song seeing that her version was released on 15 June while Wang's version came after on 30 June, according to China's Copyright Law. Therefore, Zhang Bichen's version is the first publicly released and widely circulated recording, making her the sole original singer of the song. This fact, they stated, is clear and indisputable. Following this, Wang's label Elephant Music issued a statement that they would temporarily retract public performance rights for "Ring of Time", and the song would no longer be available for public performance. They emphasised that the song was intended to have dual original vocalists from the beginning, with both Wang Sulong and Zhang Bichen interpreting it in their own styles. This, they said, reflected artistic collaboration, not a mere copyright dispute. (Photo Source: Zhang Bichen IG, SINA)

"Born to Be Alive" unveils first-look for Yang Zi

16 Jul - Yang Zi attracted attention recently, after the production of her new drama, "Born to Be Alive" unveiled the first photo of her as her character Bai Ju. In the photo, Yang Zi is seen with a much fuller face, with no make-up and wearing clothing that suits the weather of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau where the drama takes place. Her complexion also seemed to have darkened due to exposure to the high altitude. It was also revealed that Yang Zi went to Qinghai six months in advance for the project in order to experience the local life. Aside from gaining 10kg for the series, she also learned the Tibetan language, yak riding, and other necessary skills. She was also revealed to have refused using a body double for the more high-intensity scenes. Director Li Xue also praised Yang Zi, saying she is "one of the few young actors who can endure hardships". The story of "Born to Be Alive" focuses on Bai Ju, a lost girl who is adopted by a family in the beautiful Tibetan Plateau, and grows up to become a police woman. It also co-stars Hu Ge. Executives from iQIYI shared insights into the evolving industry landscape and outlined the platform's strategic priorities in response, including premium storytelling across long- and short-form formats, AI-powered production, and global expansion—reinforcing its vision to stay ahead of industry trends and deliver high-quality, resonant content to diverse audiences globally. As one of Asia's most influential international TV exchange platforms, the event brings together senior executives and industry leaders for insightful discussions. Meeting audience preference with "long + short" content strategy As the content landscape undergoes rapid transformation, Xiao CHEN, Senior Vice President of iQIYI, emphasized the importance of responding to shifting consumer preferences during one of the forums. He outlined the platform's three-part evaluation framework that guides premium content development: the balance of artistic merit, social value, and commercial appeal; the potential for long-term value and franchising; and the ability to generate strong cross-industry resonance. Building on this, Chen also highlighted iQIYI's integrated "long + short" content strategy, an approach designed to meet the growing demand for both emotionally rich long-form dramas and fast-paced micro dramas. This strategy reflects iQIYI's ongoing commitment to delivering diverse, high-quality storytelling. Echoing this vision, Chenyang SUN, General Manager of iQIYI's Micro Drama Center, shared that the platform's micro drama library has now surpassed 15,000 titles. With a focus on quality, youth appeal, and innovation, iQIYI has launched initiatives such as the "Thousand Micro Dramas Initiative" and established in-house studios to further enhance its competitive edge in short-form content. Enhancing production efficiency through AI-driven innovation Speaking at a forum on AI-powered production, Liang ZHU, Vice President of iQIYI and Head of the Intelligent Production Department, shared how AI is now fully embedded across the entire content lifecycle, from production to distribution, and is enhancing both creative output and operational efficiency. In the first half of 2025, the number of projects leveraging iQIYI's proprietary virtual production technology increased by 125% year over year. Its in-house Clip System enables synchronized multi-camera recording and real-time cloud uploads, and has already been used in 87 productions, including shoots in Bangkok since March. Scaling global reach with localized strategies As Chinese content continues to gain momentum overseas, Qi WANG, Head of Content Business at iQIYI International, highlighted the company's evolving global strategy. "High-quality content is the foundation," she noted. "While successful expansion depends on deep localization, including understanding audience preferences in each market to shape content positioning, user experience, and marketing approaches." With branches now established in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, North America, and the MENA region, iQIYI is accelerating its investment in locally tailored content production and short-form drama innovation to better meet the diverse and evolving entertainment needs of global audiences.
