
NSC says school-to-national athlete pathway now more integrated, starting with 20 core sports like badminton, athletics and silat
NSC director-general Jefri Ngadirin said the initiative aims to ensure a holistic and integrated approach to nurturing athletes, starting from school level through to higher education institutions and into national programmes.
'NSC is implementing these 20 core sports, alongside others, and MoHE and MoE will also roll out these 20 sports based on their respective approvals, that's the key focus. This means all agencies will implement the 20 High-Performance Core Sports at their levels.
'Secondly, on training programmes, MoHE and MoE have their own initiatives, and they'll also conduct training based on the designated sports list,' he told a press conference at NSC's Casa 4 here today.
MoHE Strategic Planning Division (Sports Section) deputy secretary, Dr Hanafiah Ayub, welcomed the coordinated effort across all levels as a game-changer for streamlining national athlete development programmes.
'With this effort, we'll see more consistent coordination, meaning our resources are aligned with the national agenda. It's great that we're working together,' he said.
Meanwhile, MoE's senior assistant director of the Sports, Co-Curriculum, and Arts Division, Norhamimi Otham, said MoE is committed to collaborating closely with NSC and MoHE to produce high-performing athletes.
'We know MoE is the foundation for everything, the starting point for nurturing athletes begins in school,' she said.
Earlier today, NSC hosted a roundtable discussion with MoE, MoHE, and NSAs, with Jefri describing the four as key players in the initiative.
In April, the government designated 20 High-Performance Core Sports as a strategic move to enhance national sports development in a more efficient, systematic and focused manner.
This was decided at the first Cabinet Committee on Sports Development (JKPS) meeting of this year, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The 20 sports are aquatics (swimming and diving), weightlifting, badminton, cycling (track), lawn bowls, esports, gymnastics (artistic and rhythmic), hockey, karate, archery, shooting, athletics, sailing, table tennis, sepak takraw, silat, squash, taekwondo, tenpin bowling and wushu. — Bernama

Chong Wei: It is my way of giving back to BAM and the nation
KUALA LUMPUR: Former world No 1 Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei says his decision to accept a seat on the BA of Malaysia (BAM) council is his way of giving back to the national body that shaped him into a badminton legend. The 42-year-old, who retired in 2019, told BH Sport that BAM's sacrifices throughout his career were too great to forget and that he now feels compelled to contribute in a different capacity. "BAM did so much for me during my playing days. This appointment is what I'd call my way of giving back to the nation and to BAM. "Whatever I can do to help, I will share for the benefit of the national team," said Chong Wei. His close ties with BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz also played a key role in his decision to join the governing body's leadership. "From the start, Tengku Zafrul has always engaged with me. He listens not only to players but also to coaches and the media. "A few weeks ago, he suggested that I come on board to help lift the national team's performance," Chong Wei revealed. The three-time Olympic silver medallist admitted he took time to weigh up the offer, as he already holds several positions, including member of the Road to Gold (RTG) committee, National Sports Council (NSC) board member, and Johor Sports ambassador. Chong Wei was also quick to dismiss talk that such high-profile roles come with lucrative financial rewards. "Many people think being in NSC or BAM means a big salary, but that's not true. These are voluntary roles, the same as the president's. "My aim is not personal gain, but to give back to the country and help nurture the next generation of players," he stressed. Commenting on BAM's three key targets – winning the Thomas Cup in 2026, capturing Olympic gold in Los Angeles 2028, and producing at least three world No 1 players or pairs by 2030 – Chong Wei praised the clear direction. "For me, this is a very positive move because now everyone – players, coaches and officials – are working towards the same goals. To succeed, we must function as one team," he said. Chong Wei vowed to give his best to help BAM restore Malaysian badminton to its former glory on the world stage.

We shouldn't have dropped F1, says SIC chief
Liberty Media Corp, the owner of F1, has quoted a price of US$70 million (RM295 million) per race in Malaysia, Sepang International Circuit CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif said. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : It was a mistake for Malaysia to give up the hosting rights for the Formula 1 (F1) grand prix, says Sepang International Circuit (SIC) CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif. He said it was a tall order now to host the F1 race in Sepang as there is a long waiting list for a place on the motorsport event's calendar. He added that it would also be very costly with Liberty Media Corp, the owner of F1, having quoted a price of US$70 million (RM295 million) for the rights to host the race in Malaysia, New Straits Times reported. 'That does not include our setup costs, in the region of RM10-20 million per year. In total, it would cost us more than RM300 million to bring back the race (annually),' he was quoted as saying. Nonetheless, Azhan believes there is a strong interest to bring the F1 grand prix back to Malaysia, adding that if enthusiasts and stakeholders were really serious about this, then 'maybe we can start the conversation'. He maintained that every stakeholder must be involved and contribute to make this a success, saying Malaysia should take a leaf from Singapore. '(Singapore) has everyone on board to make their F1 grand prix a success, from the ministries to the corporate sector and hotels. Everybody contributes. 'It has to be like that if we bring it back here,' he said, adding that the returns on investments will not be immediate. Azhan then warned against making the same mistake with the hosting rights for the MotoGP, saying that negotiations for a contract renewal with event organiser Dorna Sports will take place soon. 'We do not want to repeat the mistakes of the past. We let F1 go and now it is very hard to bring it back. I hope we don't make the same mistake with MotoGP,' he was quoted as saying. In April 2023, youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh said it would be 'quite impossible' for Malaysia to host F1 races in Sepang again because of the high costs it would incur. However, Motorsports Association of Malaysia president Mokhzani Mahathir said F1 races could return to Sepang if the corporate sector was willing to bear the costs. Malaysia first hosted the F1 grand prix in 1999 and it became a popular attraction for motorsports enthusiasts from around the world every year. The last race in Malaysia was held in 2017 after Putrajaya decided not to renew the hosting rights due to a decline in returns.
