KEARNS — A 12-year-old boy died Thursday after getting hit by a car while riding his bicycle to school, police said.
The child was riding a bike north on 4140 West and was crossing Sam's Boulevard near Kearns Junior High School around 7:45 a.m. when he was hit by a Chevrolet Tahoe, said Unified Police Sgt. Aymee Race.
First responders arrived on scene and began performing life-saving measures on the 12-year-old before he was transported to a hospital in critical condition where he later died from his injuries.
The victim was identified as Adam Mahmet, a student at Kearns Junior High School.
Race added there are crosswalk lights, but no crossing guard was present. Witnesses stayed at the scene to help with the investigation, as did the driver of the vehicle that hit the child, who police said was cooperating.
The incident remains under investigation and authorities are urging drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution, especially near school zones and crosswalks.

Jury convicts St. Paul man in 2023 shootout at White Bear Lake bar

A jury has found a St. Paul man guilty of exchanging a flurry of gunshots with another man outside a White Bear Lake bar in 2023 after an argument over a spilled drink. Kardell Baraka Otae Jackson, 51, was convicted Friday in Ramsey County District Court of all three charges against him: second-degree assault and two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a prohibited person. The verdict followed a two-day trial before Judge Kellie Charles. Jackson was taken into custody after the verdict, and sentencing is scheduled for July 28. His attorney, assistant public defender Tyler DeHaven, said in an email Monday after a request for comment, 'Mr. Jackson is disappointed in the outcome, but will continue to explore his legal options.' Jackson and Charles Edward Stevens-Thigpen fired a total of 13 rounds at each other in the parking lot of Doc's Landing, including one that grazed a 48-year-old man who was sitting in the bar. A bullet was found lodged in a dart machine, and three bullet holes were discovered in the bar's roofline. Stevens-Thigpen, 37, of St. Paul, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in July and faced a three-year prison term because he had no prior felony convictions. He was given three years of probation at his March sentencing after his attorney argued he was not the primary aggressor. According to the charging documents, officers were called to the bar along White Bear Avenue just north of Interstate 694 shortly before 1 a.m. Sept. 24, 2023. The shooters had fled but were soon identified as Stevens-Thigpen and Jackson. Surveillance video showed that Stevens-Thigpen and Jackson got into a 'heated dispute' inside the bar. At one point, Jackson held a pool cue as if he was going to strike Stevens-Thigpen with it. Two women and a man intervened and blocked Stevens-Thigpen and Jackson from one another. Jackson ran to his Chevrolet Tahoe and grabbed a gun, while Stevens-Thigpen grabbed one from his GMC Denali. When he rounded a corner of the bar, Jackson fired off a shot at him, and the two men exchanged gunfire, the charges say. Stevens-Thigpen nearly shot a woman who ran toward Jackson's Tahoe. Jackson helped her get into the SUV before he again shot at Stevens-Thigpen. Stevens-Thigpen 'grimaced' and began to favor his right leg, the charges say. As Jackson and the woman fled the parking lot, Stevens-Thigpen fired three to four more rounds at the Tahoe. He ran to the Denali and also fled. Stevens-Thigpen voluntarily went to the police department two days later, turning over a Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun to police when he arrived. He said he went to a doctor a day after the shooting because of severe bleeding from a gunshot to his thigh, and that his family convinced him to talk to police. He told police he was at the bar when he bumped into a table, knocking over a glass of soda onto his ex-girlfriend's sister. He said that caused an argument with the woman, who was Jackson's girlfriend, and Jackson intervened. Stevens-Thigpen said he went to his Denali to get his 9mm as a 'precaution.' 'I believe four shots were fired before I fired my first shot,' Stevens-Thigpen said at his plea hearing. Jackson was arrested Sept. 27 in the parking lot of his workplace. His Tahoe had three bullet holes to its passenger side. He denied firing a gun at the bar. Officers executed a search warrant on his Tahoe and recovered a Glock 9mm handgun. Jackson is not allowed to possess a firearm because of a previous felony domestic assault conviction.

Ex-Maryland officers plead guilty after staging car thefts to get insurance payouts

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. () — Two former Maryland officers recently pleaded guilty to federal charges relating to a years-long insurance fraud scheme. The U.S. Attorney's Office (USAO) said former Prince George's County Police Department (PGPD) officer 36-year-old Michael Anthony Owen, Jr. and former Anne Arundel County Police Department (AACPD) officer 31-year-old Jaron Earl Taylor admitted to being involved in a conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Between August 2018 and February 2020, Owen and Taylor worked with fellow police officers, Candace Tyler, Conrad D'Haiti and Davion Percy, among others, the USAO detailed. Man seen tearing down Dupont Circle Pride decorations; DC police investigating Members would report losses to auto insurers to obtain money or avoid paying off vehicles that were less than the amount owed to them, using their status as police officers to bolster each other's claims by writing fake police reports. Then, they submitted the police reports to insurers to validate the claim. In August 2018, the USAO said Owen and Taylor staged the theft of Taylor's Chevrolet Tahoe. After Taylor filed a fraudulent police report, reporting it as stolen, the two stripped the vehicle and drove it deep into the woods of a Maryland State Highway property near Largo. Once he filed a claim, the U.S. Automobile Association (USAA) paid Taylor more than $38,000 for the loss. Then, in January 2020, Owen reportedly helped D'Haiti avoid paying his loan balance on a Jaguar XKR. Working with him and Percy, Owen schemed to fake the car's theft. On Jan. 4 of that year, D'Haiti parked his car behind the Marlow Heights Shopping Center, where Percy worked as police chief. He paid Percy $350 to arrange for someone to tow the vehicle and 'extensively vandalize it for the purpose of creating a total insurance loss,' the USAO detailed. Tyler then filed a fake police report and D'Haiti filed a claim with Liberty Mutual Insurance. D'Haiti was paid $17,585 on the false claim. Trio accused of stealing over $30K in candles from Fairfax County retailers Also that month, Owen and Taylor helped a co-conspirator dispose of an Infiniti sedan so that they didn't have to make further payments on the vehicle while on duty overseas. The conspirator gave Taylor $1,000 to stage the theft. Taylor then forwarded the money to Owen, who filed another fake police report with PGPD, claiming the vehicle was stolen. In reality, the car had been moved to the top floor of an apartment complex's parking garage, replacing the car's license plates with ones from another vehicle. The stolen car claim the conspirators filed with GEICO was denied, however, on the grounds of fraud. Owen and Taylor pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, for which Owen faces up to 20 years in prison and Taylor faces up to three years. Their sentences are both scheduled for Sept. 23.
