Suspect in overnight armed robbery shot, killed by Unified Police
MIDVALE, Utah () — One person was shot and killed overnight in Midvale after getting into an altercation with the Unified Police Department. Sgt. Aymee Race, a spokesperson for the police department, said its officers responded to reports of an armed robbery near the 160 West and 7200 South just after 2 a.m. on Friday, May 23. The suspect's identity has not been publicly released. It is currently unclear as to what led to the altercation or the shooting, as details are extremely limited. However, police did reportedly recover a knife from the scene. Sgt. Race said the Unified Police Department does not anticipate releasing any further information due to an ongoing investigation. Per the Officer Involved Critical Incident (OICI) protocol, West Valley City Police Department will lead the investigation into the shooting. This is a developing story. Fatal crash in Midvale, motorcycle engulfed in flames
MIDVALE, Utah () — A motorcyclist has passed away after colliding with another vehicle Wednesday night in Midvale. Sgt. Aymee Race with Unified Police Department confirmed that Raul Alexis Silvasanchez-Stockseth, 24, collided with another vehicle at 8000 South and State Street. Police say crews were called out shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday night. According to preliminary investigations, police believe Silvasanchez-Stockseth was traveling at a high rate of speed before colliding with another vehicle that was turning left. Bystanders were able to pull Silvasanchez-Stockseth from the motorcycle before it became fully engulfed in flames, Race told Police and fire personnel attempted life-saving measures but he died on scene. The driver of the vehicle had minor injuries and was treated at the scene. There is no further information at this time. 12-year-old Kearns Junior High student dies after being hit by a car
KEARNS — A 12-year-old boy died Thursday after getting hit by a car while riding his bicycle to school, police said. The child was riding a bike north on 4140 West and was crossing Sam's Boulevard near Kearns Junior High School around 7:45 a.m. when he was hit by a Chevrolet Tahoe, said Unified Police Sgt. Aymee Race. First responders arrived on scene and began performing life-saving measures on the 12-year-old before he was transported to a hospital in critical condition where he later died from his injuries. The victim was identified as Adam Mahmet, a student at Kearns Junior High School. Race added there are crosswalk lights, but no crossing guard was present. Witnesses stayed at the scene to help with the investigation, as did the driver of the vehicle that hit the child, who police said was cooperating. The incident remains under investigation and authorities are urging drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution, especially near school zones and crosswalks. This story may be updated.
