Playoff games will be ‘very significant' for Mullanpur: Punjab Cricket Association secretary
CHENNAI: The playoffs and final of the 2025 Indian Premier League will happen in Mullanpur and Ahmedabad, the BCCI announced on Tuesday. The New PCA Stadium will host the Qualifier 1 and Eliminator on May 29 and 30, respectively, while Ahmedabad will host the Qualifier 2 and final (June 1 and 3). The decision, taken at the meeting on Tuesday, has largely to do with the weather patterns because of which the BCCI had held back on announcing the venues for the playoff games.
"Hyderabad and Kolkata were initially supposed to host the last four games before the one week suspension of the tournament. The new venues for the Playoffs were decided by the IPL Governing Council keeping in mind the weather conditions and other parameters," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said in a statement.
This will be the third final in four years in Ahmedabad. Mullanpur and Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), meanwhile, will host the IPL playoff games for the very first time. PCA secretary Dilsher Khanna is pleased about the new stadium in Mullanpur getting the opportunity to host the matches. "Honoured that the board thought about us and we will give it our best and host a great show. We are happy to host and very very thankful to be given the opportunity," Khanna told this daily.
The New PCA Stadium, which was established in 2021 and has been hosting domestic matches since, was officially inaugurated on March 23, 2024 as the home venue for Punjab Kings. Since then, the stadium has hosted nine IPL league games as the home venue for PBKS.
While it is yet to host an international game, the open air venue has the clearance from both the BCCI and ICC for the same. Hosting the IPL playoffs will certainly boost the profile of the venue which is all set to host the second T20I between India and South Africa men on December 11, 2025. Although there is no official confirmation or intimation to the PCA so far, the stadium was also floated as one of the venues for the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup.
Khanna believes the opportunity to host the IPL playoff is very significant for the venue and Punjab cricket. "We have a great facility and we have a very modern stadium. We will ensure that everyone goes there is very happy," Khanna said.

Karnataka Cricket Body Sought Permission To Hold RCB's IPL Celebration, New Letter Reveals Details: Report
The Karnataka State Cricket Association had sought permission for RCB's IPL trophy celebrations at Vidhan Soudha, a letter sent by it to the state government has revealed, reaffirming KSCA's assertion that it facilitated approvals for the franchise which is under fire following 11 deaths in a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. After an FIR was lodged against them, KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, secretary A Shankar and treasurer E S Jayaram submitted in the Karnataka High Court that the gate management and crowd management were not the responsibility of the association. A letter from the KSCA to the state government on June 3, which has been accessed by PTI, reveals that the cricket unit sought permission for festivities at the Vidhan Soudha by DNA Entertainment Networks. The KSCA stated that the concerned company would "make necessary arrangements" for the event. "On behalf of the M/s DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited, KSCA requests to inform that after the TATA IPL 2025 Finals on 3rd June 2025, in case Royal Challengers Bengaluru wins the IPL 2025 title, M/s DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited shall make plans for the felicitation ceremony at the Vidhana Soudha Grand Steps," KSCA stated in the letter. "KSCA requests that M/s DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited shall be permitted to make necessary arrangements at the Vidhana Soudha Grand Steps," the association further wrote in the letter addressed to the Department of Personnel & Administrative Reforms (DPAR) of the state government. While the felicitation at the Vidhan Soudha passed off without any major glitch, chaos erupted outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium where lakhs converged following RCB's social media invitation, which was eventually deleted. A planned victory parade had to be cancelled but the function inside the stadium proceeded despite the tragedy that unfolded outside. Apart from the 11 deaths, 56 people were also injured in the incident. The KSCA has pleaded in the state HC that there is "absolutely no wrong that can be attributed to the Petitioner Committee or its office bearers as they stand aloof of any liabilities against the entire unfortunate incident." "IPL events are conducted by RCB through their service provider M/S DNA network private limited and the role of KSCA is very limited as it accommodates by extending the venue and infrastructure," the body stated in its writ petition. "KCSA facilitates government permissions. The management of gates is the responsibility of RCB Franchise /DNA who execute under the direction of the police. "The police have registered the FIR under intense pressure and compelling circumstances without any preliminary enquiry by naming the petitioner/members of KSCA as accused," it added. After an urgent hearing held at the HC, Justice SR Krishna Kumar, who heard the petition seeking to quash the FIR against the KSCA office-bearers, restrained the police from taking any coercive action against the officials until the next hearing. The court also directed the petitioners to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The petition to quash the FIR will be taken up again on June 16. The High Court has also taken suo motu cognisance of the tragic incident and has asked the state to file a status report. It will be heard on June 10.

Amid Bengaluru Stampede, Mumbai's T20 World Cup Victory Parade In Focus
Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. The Mumbai police's successful crowd management during the victory parade after India's T20 World Cup win last year is in focus amid the Bengaluru stampede incident in which 11 people died. Mumbai: The stampede in Bengaluru amid celebrations over RCB's IPL win that resulted in 11 deaths has brought into focus the feat of Mumbai police, which helmed a massive victory parade with picture-perfect arrangements and clockwork precision following India's T20 World Cup win last year. Despite the iconic Wankhede stadium and almost the entire stretch of the picturesque Marine Drive turning into a sea of blue on July 4 as almost three lakh people gathered to greet the Indian team, precise placement of barricades, a steady stream of real-time announcements and on the spot decisions of crowd control saved the day, officials said on Friday. "We had just 36 hours to prepare. We were on our toes and managed around three lakh people. We told the Mumbai Cricket Association that tickets should be issued for such free public events so that crowds can be managed properly. If online tickets are kept for such events, the entry and exit of the people can be monitored and crowding can be avoided," a senior police official told PTI. While police personnel were being briefed about the event at the 32000-capacity stadium, the massive din outside, which signalled the amassing of a huge crowd, gave authorities a sense of scale, he said. "Initially, we planned to open the gates around 4 pm. But sensing the crowd build-up, the gates were opened at 2:30 pm, and all were seated in the stadium by 4 pm. While 35,000 persons were in the stadium, the rest were to be accommodated on the roads around. Announcements began to be made about the stadium being out of bounds as it was full," the official said. People arriving in the area were asked to move in an orderly manner to Marine Drive, the official said. "Just two days before this event, a stampede in Hathras in Uttar Pradesh had killed 121. So the attention to detail was absolute. Moreover, we had experience of hosting the Indian Air Force's air show at Marine Drive in January (2024), which was attended by several thousand persons," he said. A highlight of the arrangements, the official recollected, was the binding instruction not to resort to lathi-charge for untoward incidents. It was decided that barricades would play a vital role in crowd management and flow, along with heavy deployment of police at all points, he said, adding that constant announcements from loudspeakers kept everyone in the loop about the situation and what was expected of them. He praised the crowd for following the instructions of the police properly. "The Indian team came in cars till NCPA (at the southern tip of Marine Drive) and then got on to the bus, which moved through the crowd of revellers. The bus was given two layers of security," the official said. Then police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar and special police commissioner Deven Bharti, who incidentally heads the metropolis' force now, personally monitored the crowd. Minor incidents of suffocation and stampede-like situations reported near Churchgate station were defused with the timely intervention of police, with people arriving at the station by trains being asked to go back, the official said. The event was held successfully because police had given attention to even minute issues, like asking people not to bend down to pick up slippers that get left behind, as such acts can trigger a chain of events ending in stampedes, he said. Three trucks full of footwear were collected by civic workers following the event, the official pointed out. The stampede in Bengaluru occurred on Wednesday evening in front of the stadium, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations. Eleven people died and 56 were injured in the incident.
