Defamation case: TMC MP Saket Gokhale apologises to ex-diplomat Lakshmi Puri; calls allegations 'unverified'
Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale and former diplomat Lakshmi Puri NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale on Tuesday issued an apology to former diplomat Lakshmi Puri, the wife of Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri, for his posts on social media against her over the purchase of a property in Switzerland. In a post on X, Gokhale said that he regretted putting out a series of tweets that contained wrong and unverified allegations about the purchase of property by Ambassador Puri abroad. "I unconditionally apologise for having put-out a series of tweets against Amb. Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri on 13th and 23rd June 2021, which tweets contained wrong and unverified allegations in relation to the purchase of property by Amb. Puri abroad, which I sincerely regret," he said. Last year, the Delhi high court imposed a Rs 50 Lakh fine on Saket Gokhale for defaming Lakshmi Puri, and had asked him to issue a public apology. The high court determined that allegations suggesting financial misconduct regarding a Swiss property purchase by former diplomat Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri were aimed at her spouse, BJP 's Hardeep Singh Puri. The court deemed Gokhale's publication of "derogatory content" without verification as "extremely irresponsible". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The court stated that while monetary compensation cannot fully restore a damaged reputation, it ordered Gokhale to pay Rs 50 lakh in damages within eight weeks. The apology must remain on his X handle for six months from the posting date. The judge concluded that "the offending posts are per se defamatory" and caused unwarranted legal injury to her standing. The allegations of financial impropriety fundamentally damaged her reputation, resulting in diminished social status and psychological distress, compounded by false accusations. The case originated when Puri filed a petition in the high court in 2021.

Trump's border czar defends Marine deployment to Los Angeles amid immigration protests
LOS ANGELES: President Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, has defended the deployment of hundreds of marines to Los Angeles amid growing immigration protests, calling it a necessary precaution to safeguard federal property and law enforcement personnel, CNN reported. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking to CNN's Kaitlan Collins on Monday, Homan said the actions of protesters largely dictated the response. "It all depends on the activities of these protesters they make the decisions. I keep hearing reports that they're rioting because President Trump sent the national guard here it's just ridiculous," he said. According to CNN, Trump became the first US president in decades to activate the national guard without a request from a state governor. On Monday evening, the White House deployed an additional 2,000 national guard members to Los Angeles without invoking the Insurrection Act. Homan did not specify the criteria for marine deployment but clarified that their role was focused on protection. "They're not reinforcing immigration law we're doing that, we're immigration officers," he said. "Their job is protection of property and protection of our agents and their lives and their wellbeing, along with the public's wellbeing." The Pentagon confirmed that over 700 marines from the marine corps air ground combat center in California were mobilized to assist with the situation in Los Angeles, following federal immigration raids that triggered public backlash. Asked whether similar military deployments could happen in other cities, Homan said he hoped it wouldn't become the norm. "I hope not. I hope people protest peacefully. But to attack law enforcement officers who are simply enforcing the laws that Congress enacted that's unacceptable," he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On President Trump's remarks about California governor Gavin Newsom, Homan clarified there was no legal basis for any action. When asked if the governor had done anything to warrant arrest, he said, "Not at this time absolutely not." Homan also confirmed to CNN that immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) operations would continue across the country. "They'll continue every day, not only in California and Los Angeles they're going to continue in every city across the country," he said.

Maximum boasts, minimum achievements: Cong slams Shah's 'peace' remark
The Congress on Tuesday said it was "bizarre" of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to claim that peace had been established in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast, alleging that his assertion was meant to divert attention from his own "colossal failures." The opposition party also said that never has India had a Union home minister whose tenure has been one of "maximum boasts, minimum achievements." In a post in Hindi on X, Shah had on Monday said that the 11 years of the Narendra Modi government was a "golden period" of resolve, endeavour and dedication towards public service. "Naxalism is on its last legs, peace has been established in Jammu-Kashmir and the Northeast, India now responds to terrorist attacks by entering the homes of terrorists. This shows the changing picture of India under the Modi government," he said. Responding to the remarks, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh on X said Shah's claim was "bizarre" since Manipur continues to burn and Pahalgam attackers were still at large. "They are meant to divert attention from his own colossal failures," he said. "The terrorists responsible for the brutal April 22, 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam have still NOT been brought to justice. According to some reports that have not been denied, these very terrorists were also involved in the December 2023 terror attacks in Poonch and the October 2024 terror attacks in Gagangir and Gulmarg," Ramesh said. "Manipur continues to burn. The much-delayed President's Rule has been a miserable failure. Law and order is in a perilous condition," he claimed. Ramesh said the frustration, agony, and anger of the people of the state at the condition of their daily lives and livelihoods is unmistakable, Ramesh said. "The Union Home Minister has failed miserably in bringing the Pahalgam terrorists to justice. He has failed monumentally in bringing about normalcy in Manipur," the Congress general secretary said. With fresh violence rocking parts of Manipur, the Congress has targeted Modi and Shah, accusing the two of mishandling the situation in the northeastern state. "Never has India had a Union Home Minister whose tenure has been one of Maximum Boasts, Minimum Achievements unless what he has been able to do for his son can count for that," Ramesh said. In his remarks on Monday, Shah said that during the "11 years of seva", the speed and scale of the country's development have been changed by 'Minimum Government, Maximum Governance.
