Two Japanese boxers die from brain injuries in separate fights
Shigetoshi Kotari died on Friday and Hiromasa Urakawa on Saturday after being injured in their fights at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo on Aug. 2, Japanese media said. Both 28-year-old boxers underwent operations for subdural haematoma, or bleeding inside the skull, the reports said.
'We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and the Japanese boxing community during this incredibly difficult time,' the World Boxing Organization said in a statement on Saturday about Urakawa, who had lost to Yoji Saito in a knockout.
Kotari died as a result of the injury he sustained while fighting Yamato Hata to a draw in 12 rounds, the World Boxing Council said Friday.
'The WBC and its President, Mauricio Sulaiman, deeply mourn this irreparable loss and wish his family and friends strength during this difficult time,' the WBC said in a statement.
Another boxer, 28-year-old Irish super-featherweight fighter John Cooney, died of a brain injury this year after being stopped in his first Celtic title defense in February.

Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman did some punting during practice, and it wasn't pretty
As a former player, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman still feels like he can play the game at just 39-years old. Well, the Irish's coach took to the field on Sunday and was helping out during a punt drill where he was punting volleyballs to give his punt blockers a unique look. With this did seem like a fun activity for all, linebacker Drayk Bowen took it extremely seriously. Not often do you get an opportunity to go up against your head coach, and the junior star took full advantage of the opportunity. Bowen would end up blocking one of Freeman's punts, as he surely gave his coach some guff about it after. He wasn't the only one who got his hands on the ball during coach's attempts, but he was the most noticeable. It was a pretty cool interaction, and you can tell that Freeman doesn't punt often.
