Pet zebra wreaks 'havoc' on Tennessee interstate after escape
Dodging vehicles and narrowly missing being hit, a pet zebra ran into traffic along a busy greater Nashville interstate over the weekend, officials said.
As of June 2, the zebra remained missing, a Rutherford County dispatcher told USA TODAY.
The zebra broke loose on Saturday, May 31 "wreaking havoc" on Interstate 24 near Joe B. Jackson Parkway in Rutherford County, Sheriff's Office Lt. Kenneth Barrett reported.
The parkway about 35 miles south of downtown Nashville in the city of Murfreesboro, a booming town home to Middle Tennessee State University, the largest undergraduate university in The Volunteer State.
"Sheriff's deputies had to close the interstate because the zebra was running through traffic on both sides of the highway," Barrett said.
Officials later reopened the highway after the zebra disappeared into the woods.
The following day a patrol deputy snapped a photo of the zebra still on the loose.

According to the sheriff's office, the zebra escaped into a wooded area off Interstate 24 between Joe B. Jackson Parkway and the Epps Mill Road exits Saturday afternoon.
The parkway is a busy throughfare with scores of businesses and other establishments lining it.
According to a press release from the sheriff's office, Cpl. Zach Campbell the zebra belonged to a couple who he interviewed the night it escaped.
The owners, law enforcement reported, "obtained the zebra Friday night." It escaped the following day.
It was not immediately known whether the zebra was injured, how it escaped or where it escaped from.
While the Library of Congress says zebras' "unpredictable nature and tendency to attack preclude them from being good candidates for domestication," it is legal to own one in Tennessee, the Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network reported.
Along with llamas, camels, and giraffes, Tennessee categorizes zebras as Class III animals so they do not require special permits or paperwork to be kept as pets.

Anyone who spots the zebra is asked to not approach it and call the sheriff's office at 615-898-7770.

Watch: Funeral services for Morrow County deputy fatally shot on Memorial Day
GALION, Ohio (WCMH) – A private ceremony at Marion Cemetery will conclude a week's worth of remembrance for a Morrow County deputy who was shot and killed in the line of duty. Deputy Daniel 'Weston' Sherrer will be laid to rest Wednesday in Marion. A public service to honor and celebrate Sherrer is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Northmor High School near Galion, with former sheriff and current pastor Steve Brenneman officiating. Morrow County comes together to remember fallen deputy After the service, the procession route will proceed south from Northmor High School to U.S. 42, where it will head westbound past the Morrow County Sheriff's Office where Sherrer worked and through the center of Mount Gilead, the county seat. On Memorial Day, Sherrer was shot and killed while responding to a domestic situation at a home on County Road 26 south of Marengo. Sherrer's body was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office before a police escort brought him back to Mount Gilead last Wednesday during a 120-mile procession. A man drove into traffic. He was trying to kill his wife, court docs say.
A central North Carolina man is facing multiple charges after he drove into oncoming traffic and caused an intentional head-on crash in an attempt to kill his spouse, according to court documents. At least three people were injured in the crash, including his wife, reported television stations WRAL-TV and WNCN. The extent of their injuries was not immediately clear on June 4, but USA TODAY had reached out to officials for more information. The man, 33-year-old Andersen Singleton, is facing at least six charges for an incident that happened on May 31, according to court documents filed in Wake County District Court and obtained by USA TODAY.. His charges include one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to inflict serious injury, one count of reckless driving to endanger, one count of injury to personal property, and one count of driving left of a center lane, per online court records. Singleton has also been charged with assaulting, stalking, or threatening his spouse, per court records obtained by USA TODAY. Singleton is being held with no bond and has been ordered to stay 300 feet away from his spouse's home, school, or job as well. Singleton waived his right to court-appointed counsel on June 2, the North Carolina Judicial Branch confirmed to USA TODAY on June 4. He can hire his own attorney, but no one has made an appearance on his behalf as of June 4, the branch said The crash happened just before 6 a.m. on May 31, reported WNCN. In the redacted court documents, officials allege that on May 31, Singleton was driving a Toyota Camry with the victim also in the vehicle. According to authorities, Singleton assaulted the victim "with a motor vehicle by intentionally crashing into oncoming traffic, a deadly weapon, with the intent to kill him." Authorities also said Singleton's actions led to damage totaling more than $200. 'The bomber had help': Arrest made in Palm Springs fertility clinic explosion Jorge Bravo saw Singleton crash the vehicle and captured the footage on his dashboard camera, reported WRAL-TV. The footage shows the Toyota Camry crash head-on into an oncoming vehicle, which had two people inside. Bravo said after the impact, he went over to help and spoke to Singleton. "He was telling me how he was trying to kill himself and his wife because they were constantly fighting,' Bravo told WRAL-TV. He also said something else to Bravo, the witness told another outlet, WNCN. "We're definitely going to the psych ward," Bravo said, quoting Singleton. 'I thought that was a very interesting thing for him to just kind of blurt out. He's just … confessing all of this.'
