National Audit Department explores new tech to uncover complex fraud
Datuk Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi said this was already part of their work process.
"The National Audit Department is undergoing a digitalisation process, where almost all audits are now being carried out digitally, especially audits involving companies, which have already begun.
"We are also exploring how to utilise new technologies to detect fraud, particularly the complex and emerging fraud issues. This is already part of our ongoing work process.
"Embracing new technology is something we are committed to, and we must fully adopt it so that we can assist in tracking and finding solutions to new audit-related issues," she said at a press conference after the launch of the Accounting Fraud Working Group here today.
Present were Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki and Accountant General Nor Yati Ahmad.
Earlier in her speech, Wan Suraya said the working group was established to develop more effective methods of controlling accounting fraud risks, build the capacity of agencies in identifying early fraud indicators, and, in the long term, to strengthen compliance with accounting standards and relevant laws.
Wan Suraya added that the Auditor General's Report, published annually, had consistently highlighted various forms of non-compliance and weaknesses.
This includes cases of misconduct and abuse of power, punitive misconduct issues involving individuals lacking integrity in administrative and financial processes, and weaknesses in financial management and governance within departments and government-linked companies, which compromise the effectiveness and transparency in the use of public resources.
"These audit findings call for firm and coordinated action. At the same time, they highlight the need to strengthen internal controls, improve oversight mechanisms, and ensure greater accountability among all stakeholders.
"If not addressed efficiently and effectively, these factors will lead to recurring weaknesses. Therefore, corrective measures should not focus solely on procedures, but also address workplace culture, structured monitoring, and human capital development within the public sector," she said.
The working group will be spearheaded by the MACC. It includes the Auditor General's Department, Accountant General's Department, Inland Revenue Board, Malaysian Companies Commission, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), and the Malaysian Institute of Accountants.

Modern township set to transform Kinabatangan into East Coast growth hub
KOTA KINABALU (July 29): Kinabatangan is set to make history with the development of a modern township, Bandar Seri Milian, which is poised to become a catalyst for rural progress and economic upliftment in the region. This high-impact development is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Kinabatangan District Council and private developer SUNMOW Construction Sdn Bhd, encompassing a mixed development over 157.48 acres in Kota Kinabatangan town. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for August 15 at 2pm, at Dataran Terminal Terbuka, Kota Kinabatangan, and will be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor. Community Development Leader for Lamag, Johainizamshah Johari, said the Bandar Seri Milian project will be implemented in three phases over a 15-year period, with a Gross Development Value (GDV) of RM366 million. Significantly, he noted that the project is fully funded by the developer, with no financial burden or land collateral required from the local authority. Key components of the project include modern and affordable housing, essential infrastructure such as roads, water and electricity supply, a new administrative centre for the Kinabatangan District Council, educational institutions, a community hall, recreational areas, and designated business, commercial, and light industrial zones. Johainizamshah emphasised that Bandar Seri Milian is not just a physical transformation but a symbol of the government's commitment to holistic development in rural areas. 'Under Hajiji's leadership, the state government is determined to ensure the people of Kinabatangan enjoy access to modern amenities, economic opportunities, and an improved quality of life,' he said in a statement on Tuesday. The project aligns with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development blueprint, which promotes balanced development between urban and rural areas and aims to ensure inclusive prosperity. He also expressed confidence in the developer's track record in delivering large-scale, self-financed projects, adding that it would ensure smooth execution. 'This is an investment for the future. Bandar Seri Milian will emerge as a new growth hub, attracting investors, creating jobs, and stimulating the local entrepreneurship ecosystem. 'The development is expected to generate lasting socioeconomic benefits for Kinabatangan and elevate the district into a key growth centre on Sabah's East Coast,' he said.

Keris Strike exercise draws growing international interest, says army chief
LENGGONG: The Keris Strike Exercise, now in its 30th edition, continues to attract growing international attention, reflecting the success of Malaysia's long-standing multilateral military cooperation programme. Army Chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan said this year's exercise saw the participation of observer officers from Thailand and Japan. "This shows that after more than 30 years, the exercise continues to gain recognition and trust from our partner nations. "It also reflects growing international confidence in this joint training initiative. We aim to involve more countries as observers in the future," he said following the final assault and closing ceremony of the Keris Strike Exercise Series 30/2025 at Felda Lawin earlier today. The exercise featured a live-fire drill conducted at the Tanjung Hantu Firing Range yesterday, involving the Malaysian Army's ASTROS II Multiple Launch Rocket System and the U.S. Army's HIMARS system. Muhammad Hafizuddeain said the event was made more significant with the presence of Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, and Raja Permaisuri Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim. "It was a great honour for our armed forces to have Their Royal Highnesses witness the live-fire exercise. I'm fully satisfied with the level of readiness shown by the participating troops, especially during the final assault phase, which marked the climax of the exercise. We can confidently say the objectives of this joint training have been met," he said. He also addressed issues raised in the recent Auditor-General's Report (LKAN) 2/2025 regarding non-compliance in contract management, confirming that the National Audit Department is reviewing procedural lapses in one of the Army's earlier projects. "These will be rectified. Moving forward, we will be more vigilant and ensure contract managers pay closer attention to compliance and collection matters," he said. Last week, Auditor-General Datuk Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi revealed significant weaknesses in procurement and contract administration for Malaysian Army armoured vehicles between 2020 and 2023. One of the key findings was the government's failure to collect RM162.75 million in late delivery penalties from the main supplier of the 8×8 GEMPITA armoured vehicles, despite the contract ending in December 2022. – BERNAMA

Keris Strike Exercise gains global traction with Thailand, Japan observers
LENGGONG: The 30th edition of Malaysia's Keris Strike Exercise has reinforced its reputation as a key multilateral military initiative, attracting observer delegations from Thailand and Japan for the first time. Army Chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan highlighted the exercise's expanding global appeal during the closing ceremony at Felda Lawin. 'This reflects three decades of trust-building with partner nations. The presence of international observers validates our joint training framework,' he said. The week-long drill culminated in a live-fire demonstration at Tanjung Hantu Firing Range, featuring Malaysia's ASTROS II rocket launchers and the U.S. Army's HIMARS systems. The event gained ceremonial significance with Sultan Nazrin Shah and Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim attending. 'Their Royal Highnesses' presence honoured our forces. Troops displayed exceptional readiness during the final assault,' Muhammad Hafizuddeain noted. Addressing recent scrutiny, the Army Chief acknowledged audit findings on contract mismanagement in armoured vehicle procurement. The National Audit Department is reviewing lapses in a 2020-2023 project, including uncollected RM162.75 million penalties from a GEMPITA supplier. 'We are rectifying procedures to strengthen compliance,' he assured. – Bernama
