After JNU, Jamia & Hyderabad's MANUU suspend ties with institutions in Turkey over support to Pakistan
Additionally, the use of Turkish-origin drones by Pakistan to breach Indian airspace has triggered widespread public and political backlash within the country.
On Wednesday, the JNU announced that it had suspended its MoU with Inonu University in Turkey. This move comes amid an intensifying boycott of Turkish goods and services in India, spurred by Turkey's vocal support for Pakistan following India's military action under Operation Sindoor.
New Delhi: After Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and Hyderabad's Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) Thursday announced the suspension of their Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with educational institutions in Turkey, citing national security concerns.
In a statement Thursday, Jamia affirmed its support for the nation. 'Due to national security considerations, any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and any institution affiliated with the Government of the Republic of Türkiye stands suspended with immediate effect, until further orders,' the university said.
Similarly, the MANUU announced the immediate termination of its academic MoU with the Yunus Emre Institute.
'The decision has been taken in protest against Turkey's support for Pakistan's terrorist activities in the context of Indo-Pak tensions,' the university registrar said in an official communication.
The university stated that the MoU had been signed on 2 January, 2024, for a period of five years, under which a diploma course in Turkish language was introduced at the School of Languages, Linguistics, and Indology.
'The services of a Visiting Professor were engaged for this program. It is also worth noting that the Visiting Professor from Turkey has already returned to his country,' the statement stated.
There is also growing demand for a tourism boycott of both Turkey and Azerbaijan, following Ankara and Baku's support for Islamabad and their criticism of India's strikes on terror camps in Pakistan.
MakeMyTrip, according to media reports, has seen a 60 percent decline in bookings to Turkey and Azerbaijan, accompanied by a sharp rise in cancellations. Similarly, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) Wednesday issued a statement, urging the Indian film industry to avoid shooting films in Turkey in the future.

NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday commended the seven multi-party delegations for effectively representing India's stance in global capitals following Operation Sindoor , a decisive strike against terrorist hubs in Pakistan and PoK. "Met members of various delegations who represented India in different countries and elaborated on India's commitment to peace and the need to eradicate the menace of terrorism. We're all proud of the manner in which they put forward India's voice," PM said on X. Over 50 representatives from the delegations, who visited 33 foreign capitals and the EU, called on Modi to share their experiences. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said the PM was "very pleasant" to the delegation members, seeing it as an opportunity to thank them. "He walked around the lawn to different tables, talking to different groups of people... It was a good, lively, informal meeting," Tharoor said, adding that MPs shared insights and suggested such visits be made a regular practice, which the PM seemed to support. The delegations - comprising current and former MPs and ex-diplomats - conveyed India's firm stand against Pakistan-linked terrorism and its commitment to global peace. EAM S Jaishankar had earlier praised the delegations for highlighting India's position.

Newark airport videos: Delhi formally takes up matter with US Embassy
The Ministry of External Affairs has formally raised the matter with the US Embassy in New Delhi in the wake of social media videos purportedly showing an Indian national being handcuffed and pinned to the ground at the Newark airport. The Indian Consulate in New York has also been in touch with the US authorities to ascertain the details of the incident, as per sources. Posted on X by Indian-American entrepreneur Kunal Jain, the videos and photographs showed an unidentified young man being restrained by officers from the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD), the agency responsible for law enforcement across major transport hubs in New York and New Jersey Sunday night. Jain had tagged the Indian Embassy in Washington DC and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in his series of posts. During a call from The Indian Express to Port Authority Police Department at Newark International Airport, an officer said that 'the PAPD doesn't get involved in deportations'. 'The Ministry has formally raised the matter with the US Embassy in New Delhi. Our Embassy in Washington DC and the Indian Consulate in New York have also been in touch with the US authorities to ascertain the details,' sources in the Ministry said. 'We have so far have not received any details about the incident or the circumstances under which he was restrained, the flight he had to board or boarded and his final destination,' sources said, adding that the ministry will continue to follow up on the matter. There is still no information if the person has left Newark or has arrived in India, as per those aware of the matter.
