Hay fever symptoms could be prevented with ‘molecular shield' applied to the nose

A "MOLECULAR shield" placed in the nose could prevent hay fever symptoms, a study suggests.
Scientists have engineered an antibody that they say "opens the door to a new generation of precision allergy treatments".
The antibody was found to block hay fever symptoms when applied to the noses of mice.
Around one in five people are allergic to pollen, known as hay fever, striking millions with streaming noses, sneezing, itchy eyes and coughing during the spring and summer.
Scientists say more and more people have developed the allergy in the past few decades, with the number likely to continue rising.
Aside from changes to health and genetics, scientists reckon factors like improved hygiene, widespread use of antibiotics and antiseptics, lifestyle changes, diet, pollution, and climate change are behind the massive surge in hay fever sufferers.
Most people try to combat their symptoms with a mix of antihistamines, nasal sprays and eye drops.
But a new study, published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology, suggests "molecular shields" could be used to combat hay fever in the future.
Researchers in Kazakhstan have engineered an antibody, which when applied to the inside of the nose stopped mice developing hay fever and asthma symptoms in response to mugwort pollen.
Mugwort is a type of weed that grows in the UK, which produces large amounts of allergenic wind-borne pollen.
Its pollen season is generally between mid-June to late August.
The plant is the most common cause of pollen allergies in central Asia and parts of Europe, where between 10 and 15 per cent of people with hay fever are allergic to it.

Study senior author Prof Kaissar Tabynov said: "This is the first time a monoclonal antibody designed to block a specific pollen allergen has been delivered directly into the nose, and been shown to protect against allergy symptoms in the upper and lower airways.
"In the future, similar antibodies could be developed for other major pollen allergens, such as ragweed or grass.
"This opens the door to a new generation of precision allergy treatments that are fast-acting, needle-free, and tailored to individual allergen sensitivities."
The treatment is a type of "allergen-specific monoclonal antibody therapy".
It involves researchers developing antibodies that either specifically recognise the allergen itself and block it, or bind to antibodies released by the immune system against allergies, known as IgE antibodies.
Both stop the allergen - in this case hay fever - from triggering an allergic reaction.
Up until now, researchers have injected antibodies into the bloodstream to achieve this.
Prof Tabynov, of the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University (KazNARU), said: "Our method acts immediately and locally at the lining of the nose, by neutralising the allergen on contact.
"This 'molecular shield' not only prevents IgE antibodies from being activated, but may also reduce inflammation through other mechanisms, such as calming immune cell responses and promoting regulatory pathways."
The research team injected mice with a dose of mugwort pollen, stimulating them to produce antibodies against it.

Antihistamines
Antihistamines (cetirizine or loratadine) work by blocking histamine in the body, which is released when the body detects something it thinks is harmful.
Histamine causes blood vessels to expand and the skin to swell, but in people with hay fever, also causes an allergic reaction. That's the watering eyes, blocked nose, rashes and so on.
Max Wiseberg, airborne allergens expert and creator of HayMax, says that many antihistamines are available on prescription, such as Telfast, which you can see your GP for or get through an online doctor, such as LloydsPharmacy.
Telfast, and other prescription-only antihistamine tablets, work in the same way as over-the-counter antihistamines, but are stronger and intended to help with more severe symptoms.
'Get your prescription in advance of the season so you have your medication in time to start taking it at the right time,' he says.
'Some are best taken at least one month before the hay fever season starts."
Nasal sprays
A nasal spray can be effective in controlling congestion and stuffiness.
Pharmacists can advise on nasal sprays (sodium cromoglicate, ipratropium bromide or decongestant), and eye drops, too.
Nasal sprays can also help with other symptoms of hay fever 'because the medicine is targeted directly to the nose, which is where the vast majority of allergens enter the body', Max says.
Independent pharmacist Rita Ghelani says: 'Try Xlear nasal spray, which contains xylitol, and has anti-bacterial properties and keeps the nasal lining moist.
'If symptoms are more severe, then try an anti-inflammatory nasal spray – sometimes referred to as a steroid nasal spray – which can take a few days to work.
'Start with one that contains beclomethasone, which is used twice a day, in the morning and at night.'
Rita also advises cleaning the nose with a saline nasal spray before a steroid spray, saying: 'It will remove sticky mucus from the nasal passage, thus improving the effectiveness of the medication.'
Eye drops
If itchy eyes are your primary concern, Rita says: 'Try using sodium cromoglicate eye drops.
"These make the eyes less sensitive to allergens such as pollen and reduce irritation.
"They need to be used four times a day to keep the levels of the active ingredient high enough to be effective.
"Keep using them even if symptoms improve.
'Using a good eye drop to lubricate the eyes may also help with dry eyes during the summer months.'
The mice were then humanely euthanised and their spleens harvested to isolate white blood cells.
The white blood cells were fused with lab-grown cancer cells from mice with multiple myeloma, to make an antibody against mugwort pollen.
Researchers then placed the antibodies in the noses of five mice, who were allergic to mugwort pollen after being injected with pollen extract.
A further five mice made allergic to pollen weren't given the antibody, while another five weren't injected with pollen or given the antibody.
Three weeks later, all the mice were exposed to mugwort pollen three times.
The results showed that mice given the antibody displayed a "major reduction" in allergy symptoms compared to the other rodents.
They had less swelling in response to the pollen - a common allergic reaction in rodents.
They also rubbed their nose less frequently, indicating less irritation.
They were able to breathe normally when exposed to pollen and they also had less inflammation inside their nostrils.
The researchers concluded that the "molecular shield" was "effective" in blocking allergic reactions against mugwort pollen triggered by IgE, at least in mice.
Prof Tabynov added: "Before this treatment can be tested in people, we need to adapt the antibody to make it suitable for humans - a process called 'humanisation' - and conduct additional preclinical safety and efficacy studies.
"If these are successful and provided we have adequate support, we could begin clinical trials in two to three years, though bringing it to market would likely take five to seven years.
"We are already planning for this transition and working on scaling up production."

An osteopath has hit out at the anti-vaxx mother of a model who died from cancer, telling an inquest that he was 'not the right person to be helping her'. Cambridge graduate and model Paloma Shemirani died last July aged 23 after refusing conventional cancer treatments for her treatable non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. Her mother, Kay 'Kate' Shemirani, was a notorious anti-vaxxer struck off the UK's nursing register in 2021 for her extreme anti-medicine views, including discouraging the use of masks and vaccines during Covid. She rose to prominence on social media while sharing Covid-19 conspiracy theories, an inquest at Oakwood House in Maidstone, Kent, heard previously. Ms Shemirani was involved in arranging an alternative 'treatment programme' for her daughter. Osteopath Nick Gosset saw Paloma on July 19, 2024, the day she collapsed and was taken to hospital by air ambulance. On Wednesday, he told the inquest that he had advised Ms Shemirani to seek further medical support. Mr Gosset said: 'It was obvious to me that I was not the right person to be helping her, normally you see a patient like that you would refer her (to a GP). Her mother, Kay 'Kate' Shemirani, pictured at an anti-vaxx rally, was a notorious anti-vaxxer struck off the UK's nursing register in 2021 for her extreme anti-medicine views Paloma, pictured in 2019, was a Cambridge graduate who picked up A* and A grades in her A Levels and had aspirations to build a career in publishing 'Any referral was refused - when I suggested that the proper avenue of approach was through a normal medical channel she dismissed it. 'I felt I was presented with a young woman - and I'm not an expert in this, my field is biomechanics - a young lady who was in the last stages of a very difficult disease, and she had declined to engage with conventional treatment.' He added he felt 'aggrieved' that he had been put in that professional position. 'I was left with no good choices and the only choice I felt I had at the time was to offer her the opportunity to return where I might be able to persuade her of the importance of seeking further medical support,' said Mr Gosset. In written statements submitted to the family division of the High Court in Spring 2024, Paloma described herself as 'anti-vaxx' adding that she declined chemotherapy partly because of her 'background in natural healing', the inquest heard on Monday. The proceedings, which involved the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, were on the appropriateness of her care. Paloma said she was 'delighted' with her alternative treatment and 'sure' she would 'make a full recovery' if left to continue it. She also claimed her human rights had been violated by NHS practitioners, in the statement read by lawyer Alison Hewitt. It said: 'I am far from being a vulnerable young adult. Apart from becoming independent after I moved to Cambridge for university, I have practised the same principles that I grew up with. 'I have always been extremely health conscious: sticking to all-organic produce, I prepare all my own meals and I absolutely do not drink or cook with tap water. 'I have never taken drugs, despite pressure to, and I rarely drink alcohol. 'If I became ill, I've always turned to my mum first for advice as she is a trained nurse and qualified nutritionist. 'Practically fanatical about my health, my close friends know me as a staunch advocate for all proven natural healing'. She described her mother as 'an extremely forceful advocate for natural health' who is 'misquoted' by people claiming 'those natural solutions are conspiratorial'. Ms Shemirani was struck off as a nurse in 2021, with a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) committee finding she had spread Covid-19 misinformation that 'put the public at a significant risk of harm', the inquest heard previously. The anti-vaxx mother previously joined the coroner's court online - and immediately indicated she is unrepentant on her outspoken opinions. She referred to her daughter's cancer as a 'purported diagnosis' as she argued with Coroner Catherine Wood about what evidence should be heard at the Kent inquest. Despite initially having been given a positive prognosis that she could survive her condition, former Miss Brighton finalist Paloma died just seven months after her diagnosis having refused help. Her two brothers, Gabriel and Sebastian, and former boyfriend, Ander Harris, have since gone on record to claim Paloma had been coerced by her mother into refusing medical help - a claim their mother has denied. The brothers first spoke out in a BBC Panorama interview last month, where they revealed the accusations made against their mother. Ms Shemirani, who describes herself as a 'natural nurse' to her 80,000 followers on X, believes in 'Gerson therapy' - that a vegan diet, natural juices, coffee enemas and supplements can cure cancer. Another statement in Paloma's name added 'my friends know me as a staunch advocate of the Gerson therapy'. She said she had been using Gerson therapy as one mode of treatment on the advice of her mother's ex-fiancee, Doctor Patrick Villers, and that at 15 years old, she spent three weeks in his camp in Mexico where it was practised. Gerson therapy involves a strict organic vegetarian diet and enemas and has been used in cancer treatment, though Cancer Research UK says there is no scientific evidence it can be used for these purposes. Her GP was also monitoring her blood and progress, she said. The former Cambridge student went on to deny having the disease and said: 'I was not diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma... I have never had a shadow on my lung, this is absurd fantasy, no proof.' She described the diagnosis as 'suspected and unconfirmed', and said a 'differential diagnosis' only meant cancer could not be ruled out. Paloma understood she had a one in five chance of surviving the commonplace R-CHOP treatment that was offered, and feared it would likely make her infertile, the inquest heard. 'I do not want to undergo such a harsh treatment that could even kill me when there is a possibility this is not cancer,' she said. The High Court statement alleged multiple violations of human rights in her care, the inquest heard, including Articles 3, 6 and 8 and possibly Articles 1, 5 and 12. 'I am so shocked, as are others assisting me, especially my mother, that this could take place today,' the statement said. 'These were put in place forever to prevent what Dr Mengele did in the second world war. How could this happen today?' it continued. Notorious Nazi doctor Josef Mengele performed experiments on his victims in Auschwitz. The patient said symptoms she presented in hospital with - including a swollen face, excruciating chest pain being unable to move her arm - had subsided. Earlier this month, Paloma's inquest heard from haematology consultant Dr Arunodaya Mohan who detailed how the young woman was diagnosed and how a treatment plan was created. The coroner's court heard that Paloma was first admitted to A&E on October 4 2023 with chest pain, a fever and a lump in the neck. She was then admitted on December 3 and was put forward for an emergency CT scan the next day. After a biopsy was taken, Paloma was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma with a large mass being found near her sternum. While the consultant was asked about scans from radiology Mrs Shemirani shouted, 'I'd like to object', to which the coroner told her she could not object to a witness statement. Dr Mohen said that as part of a standard treatment plan Paloma was advised to start six cycles of chemotherapy - each lasting 14 days. She rose to prominence on social media while sharing Covid-19 conspiracy theories, an inquest at Oakwood House in Maidstone, Kent, pictured, heard previously. Steroids would also be provided, with radiotherapy and stents being considered later down the line. The doctor said side effects of the treatment, which could have been taken as an inpatient or outpatient, include nausea, vomiting, hair loss, changes to nails and the production of 'tumour lives' which can produce toxins and affect chemicals in the body. Dr Mohen added: 'Chemotherapy can affect fertility so we offered Paloma full fertility preservation before she went ahead with chemotherapy. 'We had a discussion regarding on fertility and we discussed a referral to a tertiary centre. And she was happy to go ahead with the fertility preservation and we discussed the pet scan. 'At that point I don't think I had any concerns [about her capacity]. We went through the management plan at that time and that's when we gave her the cure rate of 80 per cent during that conversation.' At this stage, Paloma's cancer was considered to be a stage one mass and due to her age and extent of the disease she had a good chance of survival. Her doctor said: 'She was very low risk and had an 80 per cent chance of survival which is an excellent cure rate.' After first meeting with Paloma on December 22, Dr Mohan had discussed treatment options and a potential PET scan with Paloma to which she is said to have nodded in agreement. She claims, without evidence, that her daughter was deliberately killed by the NHS Yet the next day Paloma appeared to have changed her mind and was exploring 'unconventional' treatment options. The consultant said she had been surprised when Paloma said that she would not be continuing treatment. Dr Mohan added: 'It was not expected that she was not going ahead with the treatment. 'She said she hadn't made up her mind yet and she might be cancelling her treatment. I can't remember what treatment that was in favour of but it wasn't a conventional treatment. 'She would not disclose why she was worried about the treatment but I did ask her and my team was worried that she might not undergo treatment.' Dr Mohan said she had only had one conversation with Paloma's mother over the phone and had not discussed Ms Shemirani being Paloma's power of attorney. She said Ms Shemirani had repeated Paloma's concerns about the side effects of steroids and said 'she wasn't happy with the Pet scan'. Dr Mohan added: 'I said we would ask Paloma what she wanted and if she decided this treatment I will go in that direction. 'We thought at the time she had full capacity in what was going on. I didn't even want to talk to mum as I didn't think it was helpful.' It's understood that Paloma's father Faramarz also believes in conspiracy theories, but is divorced and living separately to her mother. Gabriel and his brother Sebastian went public last month, claiming their sister died because she refused conventional chemotherapy treatment. The brothers said that doctors gave Paloma an 80 per cent chance of survival but rejected the treatment because of pressure from her mother whom she had been trying to improve her relationship with.

From the depths of The Mariana Trench to the summit of Everest, microplastics can be found almost everywhere on Earth. Now, a study has revealed just how many toxic particles are lurking in our homes and cars. Scientists from the University of Toulouse collected air samples from their own homes as well as their cars in realistic driving conditions. Their analysis revealed that adults inhale about 68,000 microplastics measuring 10 micrometers across or less every day – 100 times more than previous estimates suggested. Worryingly, these particles are small enough to penetrate our lungs, according to the experts. 'Everywhere we look, we find microplastics, even in the air we breathe inside our homes and cars,' the team said. 'The biggest concern is how small these particles are – completely invisible to the naked eye. We inhale thousands of them every day without even realizing it. 'Deep inside our lungs, microplastics release toxic additives that reach our blood and cause multiple diseases.' Previous studies have detected microplastics suspended in the air across a wide range of outdoor and indoor environments. However, most research has focused on particles ranging in size from 20 to 200 micrometers. In their new study, the team decided to focus on smaller particles ranging in size from one to 10 micrometers – which are more likely to penetrate the lungs. The researchers collected air samples from their own apartments and cars, before using a technique called Raman spectroscopy to measure the concentrations of microplastics. Their analysis revealed that the average concentration of microplastics in a home is 528 particles per cubic metre, while in cars it is 2,238 particles per cubic metre. Almost all (94 per cent) of the particles were smaller than 10 micrometres. By combining these results with previously published data on exposure to indoor microplastics, the researchers estimate that the average adult inhales about 3,200 microplastic particles ranging in size from 10 to 300 micrometres every day. We also breathe in an estimated 68,000 particles of one to 10 micrometres – 10 times more than we previously thought. 'We found that over 90% of the microplastic particles in indoor air across both homes and cars were smaller than 10 µm, small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs,' the researchers said. 'This was also the first study to measure microplastics in the car cabin environment, and overall, we detected indoor concentrations up to 100 times higher than previous extrapolated estimates, revealing indoor air as a major and previously underestimated exposure route of fine particulate microplastic inhalation.' Currently, research investigating how microplastics affect human health is in its infancy, but there is a growing body of evidence suggesting they could be harmful. Since plastics contain chemicals known to be toxic or carcinogenic, scientists are concerned that a buildup of microplastics could damage tissues in our bodies. In rodent studies, exposure to high levels of microplastics has been found to damage organs, including the intestines, lungs, liver, and reproductive system. In humans, early studies have suggested a potential link between microplastic exposure and conditions such as cardiovascular disease and bowel cancer. HOW MUCH PLASTIC POLLUTION DO WE BREATHE IN PER DAY? Plastic pollution has become so widespread that we may be inhaling up to 130 tiny pieces a day, research found. Fibres from fleece and polyester clothing and particles from urban dust and car tyres are the biggest sources of so-called microplastics in the air. The tiny specks are lighter than air and could cause asthma, heart disease and auto-immune conditions, the research, published in December 2017, found. The study, a review of a number of recent plastics studies, revealed washing a single polyester garment can produce 1,900 plastic fibres. This plastic pollution is on the rise as more and more synthetic clothing is produced. While only people working with plastic fibres are known to develop respiratory problems, experts say the pollution is so widespread that it may now pose a risk to everyone's health. The study's author, Dr Joana Correia Prata, of Fernando Pessoa University in Portugal, said: 'The evidence suggests that an individual's lungs could be exposed to between 26 and 130 airborne microplastics a day, which would pose a risk for human health, especially in susceptible individuals, including children.

Men born in the summer are more likely to be depressed, according to a new study. Researchers from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Canada wanted to investigate whether the season of birth influences the likelihood of experiencing depression and anxiety symptoms in adulthood. They looked at a sample of 303 people—106 men and 197 women—with an average age of 26. The respondents were recruited from universities across Vancouver, and came from a 'global population'. The study authors revealed that they were mostly of South Asian (31.7 per cent), White (24.4 per cent), and Filipino (15.2 per cent) descent. They were asked to fill in PHQ-9 (for depression) and GAD-7 (for anxiety) assessments, which allowed the researchers to filter out the people who met the medical criteria for the common mental health issues. Furthermore, the participants' birth month was categorised by its respective season: spring (March, April, May), summer (June, July, August), autumn (September, October, November) and winter (December, January, February). It was noted that mental health conditions were common among participants, with 84 per cent and 66 per cent of participants experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety, respectively. Upon crunching the numbers, the researchers concluded that there are no strong seasonal trends linked to anxiety, but there is a seasonal influence on depression risk. They found 78 males born in the summer could be classed as minimally depressed, mildly depressed, moderately depressed, moderately severely depressed and severely depressed on the PHQ-9 scale. This compared to 67 born in winter, 58 born in spring, and 68 born in the autumn. There are limitations to the research, and not only because it used a small sample of people from a similar demographic (young adults studying at university). The authors also noted that not everyone in the sample correctly completed the required PHQ-9 questions, meaning only 271 people's depression and anxiety statuses were assessed. Lead author Arshdeep Kaur concluded: 'The research highlights the need for further investigation into sex-specific biological mechanisms that may connect early developmental conditions (like light exposure, temperature, or maternal health during pregnancy) with later mental health outcomes.' The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that between 700,000 and 800,000 people die by suicide every year—a cause of death closely linked to instances of depression. Depression is also linked to substance abuse, alcoholism and poor lifestyle choices—such as eating unhealthy foods—which can lead to killer conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Last year it was reported that experts had discovered six distinct types of anxiety and depression. A mix of the two conditions is estimated to be Britain's most common mental health problem, affecting about eight per cent of the population, with a similar rate in the US. However many people with the conditions are forced to cycle through different treatments, which include psychotherapy and medication, in the hope of finding one that works. The researchers collected data from a sample of 1,051 patients with depression and anxiety, 850 of which weren't currently being treated. Patients had brain scans done while they were both at rest and when asked to conduct an emotional task such responding to photos of sad people. Experts, from the University of Sydney and Stanford University in California, then compared these results between the patients as well as healthy controls to spot any differences. The aim was to find if different parts of the brain 'lit up' between patients, showing that sections of the organ were behaving differently among some participants. They also assessed each participant's symptoms of depression and anxiety, such as insomnia or feelings of suicide, to also identify any common signs between patients with similar brain scan results. The end result was that scientists were able to group patients together and break down depression and anxiety into six different subtypes. WHAT IS DEPRESSION? While it is normal to feel down from time to time, people with depression may feel persistently unhappy for weeks or months on end. Depression can affect anyone at any age and is fairly common - approximately one in ten people are likely to experience it at some point in their life. Depression is a genuine health condition which people cannot just ignore or 'snap out of it'. Symptoms and effects vary, but can include constantly feeling upset or hopeless, or losing interest in things you used to enjoy. It can also cause physical symptoms such as problems sleeping, tiredness, having a low appetite or sex drive, and even feeling physical pain. In extreme cases it can lead to suicidal thoughts. Traumatic events can trigger it, and people with a family history may be more at risk. It is important to see a doctor if you think you or someone you know has depression, as it can be managed with lifestyle changes, therapy or medication.
