Time for Scary Movies to Make Us Laugh Again
Final Destination, as a horror franchise, is known for its reliable results. Each of its first five movies begins with someone having a premonition of a terrible disaster (a plane crash, a highway pileup, a roller-coaster accident), persuading a group to avoid it, and then spending the rest of the movie dodging the Grim Reaper, who seeks to collect the souls he lost. Death exists in these films as an amorphous concept; there's no cloaked villain carrying a scythe. Instead, the characters keep finding themselves in implausibly dangerous situations, where a procession of coincidences might lead to them getting squished, impaled, or otherwise maimed.
Death is, in many ways, a comforting villain for a slasher series. It's not malevolent like the Freddys and Jasons of the genre; rather, it's goofily irresistible, a fated force that insists on smooshing a meathead in the face with his own gym equipment. It also mirrors the tone of the Final Destination saga, which follows a consistent, if slightly repetitive, formula. Sure, the fourth movie leans on 3-D photography (it was hot at the time), and the fifth reveals itself to be a surprise prequel to the first. The plot beats of the installments are always the same, however: A plucky-if-whiny group of young people comes to the realization that they cannot forever outrun the specter of doom.
I learned that Final Destination was returning, after a 14-year break, when I saw a trailer for it at the theater. It showcased one of many set pieces in the film: As a surly tattoo-parlor employee closes up shop, terrible things start to happen—his piercings get caught on a chain that's attached to a spinning fan; flammable cleaning fluid starts to leak everywhere. I felt my fellow theatergoers have the same shudder of recognition that I did. Oh, an inexplicable Rube Goldberg machine of death? This is Final Destination! It must be back!

Back it certainly is, with Final Destination: Bloodlines. There were reasons to be skeptical of its quality; the co-directors, Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, for instance, were perhaps previously best known for making a live-action Kim Possible movie for the Disney Channel. Reviving mothballed horror classics—à la the failed Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street reboots—is also a practice with a shaky track record. Yet Bloodlines is a total delight; it's also arguably the best of the series because of an added soupçon of self-awareness. The film begins, as usual, with a vision of cataclysm: a Space Needle–esque building that both collapses and explodes. Instead of taking place in the modern day, as is typical of Final Destination films, this disaster happened in 1968—and is later revealed to be a vision that a woman named Iris Campbell had decades prior.
In stopping the accident, Iris delayed the deaths of hundreds, who then perished over the decades. When Bloodlines begins, she's lived in seclusion for years, having doomed her descendants by cheating death herself. The living members of the Campbell family, by all accounts, should never have been born—giving the plot an intense timeline for them to deal with, as they come to realize that Iris's actions have now caught up with them. The well-established stakes help the story speed through the most boring part of the Final Destination schematic, where people refuse to believe the supernatural madness befalling them and then grow progressively more convinced of it as the body count rises.
Maybe this premise sounds like pseudo-philosophical fiddle-faddle. But what I love most about Final Destination is the absence of heavy, heady themes that have pervaded the horror genre of late: Rarely does a modern scary movie encourage the audience to laugh, or leave behind some especially frightening image that can amuse as much as haunt them. Not so in the Final Destination films, in which people die in the most outlandish fashion and are, at best, afforded a five-second funeral scene; maybe one family member gets a comforting pat on the back. There's a sinful sort of glee in watching all of this unfold, knowing that the same mournful character might be the next one to die. Iris even lays out the exact order in which everyone will go and the sort of hazards to look out for, which means the protagonists second-guess their every step to a Looney Tunes–level extent.

Essentially, it's fun to have a horror movie you can cheer during. The packed audience in my theater clapped and applauded as the deaths became gradually more absurd (in particular, I tip my cap to the oldest stuntperson to ever be set on fire on-screen). If Scream revived the slasher in the 1990s with its clever meta storytelling, Final Destination helped bring back the proper amusement park vibe for the genre, jolting the viewers every few minutes with a gory surprise that had them screaming and giggling at the same time. Bloodlines is well plotted and brilliantly grisly, but most important, it knows how to enjoy itself. I'd say that having fun, more than anything, is what people are seeking from the communal cinematic experience.

Miley Cyrus' Boyfriend & Dating History
All of us know who Miley Cyrus is. She was the star of Disney Channel's Hannah Montana. She's released banger after banger in her 10 years in the music industry. And her dad is, you know, Billy Ray Cyrus. What's more secretive is Miley Cyrus' dating history, which has been hush-hush since she entered the spotlight more than a decade ago. Most of us know Miley as the longtime girlfriend, then fiancé, then wife of Liam Hemsworth. The two, who dated on and off for about 10 years (more on that later), split in August 2019. Since then, Miley has had several high-profile relationships. And while the Disney Channel alum was in a longterm relationship for most of the time we knew her, there wee some off periods from Liam where she had brief flings with other stars. With more than 20 years in the biz, it may be hard to keep track of Miley's dating life. She is one of the most written-about stars in Hollywood. Ahead, we try to trace her dating history, from the first moment she met Liam Hemsworth on the set of The Last Song to her 2020 relationship with Cody Simpson. As Miley's fans know, the 'Wrecking Ball' singer is one of a kind. So who is Miley Cyrus dating now? Read on to find out. Miley was linked to musician Maxx Morando after her fling with Cody Simpson. The former drummer of The Regrettes was spotted with the Bangerz singer at Gucci's Love Parade runway show, which took place in November 2021. E! News confirmed their relationship status in October. 'Miley and Maxx are still going strong and their relationship is very serious,' an insider source revealed. 'They have been together for about a year now and Miley is really happy.' They added, 'Everyone in her family loves them together and thinks they mesh really well.' Another source told Entertainment Tonight, 'Miley and Maxx have been having a good time together,' the source tells ET. 'They've been together for a little while and are just enjoying their relationship. Miley likes the fact that they are low-key as a couple and is just focused on doing her thing and being around people that make her happy, and Maxx does that.' Another insider revealed that the two are madly in love. 'They are both artistic and creative, so they bond over being musicians,' and did confirm he joined her at her 2023 NYE party, saying, 'He was backstage with Miley and Pete [Davidson] at the New Year's Eve rehearsals and taping having a good time with them. They were are all super friendly with one another and seemed to have a great night. A source recently told Us Weekly that the two really enjoy having a private relationship. 'Everyone close to Miley says Maxx brings out the best in her,' the insider said. 'They make a lot of sense as a couple.' Miley and Cody were longtime friends before they started dating in October 2019 after her split from Kaitlynn and Liam. The 'Malibu' singer confirmed the relationship with a shirtless photo of Cody with the tweet: 'Get used to me dating – this is where I am at !' Miley confirmed that she and Cody had split in August 2020. 'But, for right now, two halves can't make a whole and we're individually just working on ourselves to become the people that we wanna be,' she said on her Instagram Live at the time. 'Like everybody else at this age, we're just deciding who we wanna be with our lives, what we wanna do with our lives. And so, don't make it some drama story if next week we're out hanging out or getting pizza. We've been friends for 10 years and we're gonna continue to be friends.' Kaitlynn was Miley's first public relationship after her breakup with Liam. The two sparked romance rumors in August 2019 (days after Miley announced her divorce from Liam) after they were photographed kissing in Italy. The two dated for a month before splitting in September 2019. Miley also dated Patrick in between her relationships with Liam. The two started dating in 2014 but split a year later after Schwarzenegger was photographed doing body shots on a mystery woman, according to Us Weekly. The two eventually reconciled before splitting for good in April 2015. In between her breakup and makeup with Liam, Miley dated Kellan. The two had a short romance in late 2013. A source told Us Weekly at the time that Liam wasn't bothered with Miley's fling with his friend. 'It doesn't hurt that he's Liam's pal,' an insider told the magazine at the time. 'They really enjoy each other's company.' Liam is Miley's big relationship. The two met on the set of The Last Song in 2009 in which they both starred. The two broke up in 2010 and reunited a month later. Liam and Miley were then engaged in 2012 when Liam proposed to Miley with a 3.5-carat ring from Neil Lane. 'I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam,' Cyrus told People at the time. A source told People the engagement had the blessing of Miley's family. 'Billy Ray loves Liam. He's happy his daughter has found the right guy,' the source said, adding that Hemsworth has spent a lot of time with her family, barbecuing together. 'The whole family loves Liam.' However, the two called off the engagement on September 2013. Months earlier, rumors came out that the Hannah Montana alum and the Hunger Games star split. Miley dispelled the rumors by saying, 'I am so sick of La. And sick of the lies that come with it,' she posted. 'I didn't call off my wedding. Taking a break from social media. #draining' The Independence Day: Insurgence star and the Bangerz singer reunited in January 2016, resuming their engagement less than a month after. Miley and Liam were wedded on December 26, 2018. In a now-deleted Instagram post, they confirmed the wedding, 12.23.18' and '10 years later …..'Miley captioned the post. In the photo of them kissing, the singer wrote: 'This is probably our one–millionth kiss.' Less than a year later, Liam made a post on Instagram about his separation from Miley. 'Hi all, Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward. This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false. Peace and Love' Miley's rep confirmed they had separated. 'Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,' the rep said. The rep continued in the statement: 'Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.' Liam filed for divorce in August 2019. In one instance in an interview with Howard Stern, Miley also revealed that she didn't think she and Liam would ever tie the knot. 'We were together since 16,' she said. 'Our house burned down. We had been like, engaged—I don't know if we really ever thought we were actually going to get married, but when we lost our house in Malibu—which if you listen to my voice pre- and post-fire, they're very different so that trauma really affected my voice. And I was actually in South Africa, so I couldn't come home, and like, my animals were tied to a post at the beach. I lost everything.' The divorce was finalized on February 22, 2020. In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2020, she revealed that the Malibu house fire 'did what I couldn't do myself'. 'It removed me from what no longer was serving its purpose,' she told the magazine. 'And then as you drown, you reach for that lifesaver and you want to save yourself. I think that's really what, ultimately, getting married was for me. One last attempt to save myself.' The Bangerz singer denied the cheating rumors when she was fresh out of the divorce. In August 2019, she tweeted, 'The truth is, once Liam & I reconciled, I meant it, & I was committed. There are NO secrets to uncover here. I've learned from every experience in my life. I'm not perfect, I don't want to be, it's boring. I've grown up in front of you, but the bottom line is, I HAVE GROWN UP. I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating. Liam and I have been together for a decade. I've said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will.' She continued, 'BUT at this point, I had to make a healthy decision for myself to leave a previous life behind. I am the healthiest and happiest I have been in a long time. You can say I am a twerking, pot-smoking, foul-mouthed hillbilly but I am not a liar.' On January 13, 2023, which is Liam's birthday, Miley released the song 'Flowers' which is speculated to be about their relationship. Pop culture Twitter PopTingz claimed that the set of the music video was where Hemsworth allegedly cheated on Cyrus with 14 women. 'The house where the music video for Miley Cyrus' 'Flowers' was recorded was previously used by Liam Hemsworth to cheat on Miley with more than 14 women while they were married,' the account tweeted, but the tweet itself is unverified. The tweet went viral with more than 40,000 likes and 10,000 retweets, however it's not confirmed whether he actually cheated on the singer with 14 women. Her 2023 album Endless Summer Vacation is filled with stories about a cheating partner, which lots of fans are speculating that it's about Liam. In 'Muddy Waters,' The lyrics are pretty blunt about her anger towards a partner who is guilty of cheating. 'I don't know / Who the hell you think you're messin' with / Get the f*ck out of my house with that sh*t / Get the f*ck out of my life with that sh*t.' She later sings, 'And you smell like perfume that I didn't purchase / Now I know why you've been closing the curtains / Get the f*ck out of my house.' Miley hasn't verified the reports that it's about her ex Liam Hemsworth, but like 'Flowers' it kind of heads in that direction. 'Muddy Waters' even slyly references another type of flower: 'You've watered the weeds and you killed all the roses.' Miley and Nick dated from June 2006 to December 2007. As fans remember, Miley and Nick, who were both 13 at the time, were stars on the Disney Channel when they dated. Nick's band, the Jonas Brothers, also opened for Miley on her Best of Both Worlds Tour toward the end of their relationship. 'It seemed like my life was over, but everyone still living,' Miley wrote about the breakup in her 2009 book, Miles to Go. One of Miley's most well-known songs about her relationship with Nick is her 2008 single, '7 Things.' In the music video, she even showed a photo of her and the JoBro. The two reunited years later to duet on the Jonas Brothers song 'Before the Storm.' Dylan revealed in a 2008 interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that he dated Miley for a hot second—a.k.a. one day—when he was around 11 or 12 years old. 'We met at her set, I believe, and we dated. And then Nick Jonas walked by and it was over,' he joked at the time. Miley had a puppy-love romance with Tyler in 2000 after they met on the set of her dad's show, Doc. As Tyler revealed in a past Entertainment Tonight interview, Miley was his first kiss when she was 7 and he was 9. 'We were so damn young…I would get excited when we would hold hands,' he told ET. Jenna Fischer Says the Later Seasons of ‘The Office' Are ‘Really Good' Despite ‘Belief' that the Show Was ‘Treading Water' After Steve Carell's Exit: ‘There Were Still These Amazing Storylines'
As one of the show's most iconic characters, it's fitting that Jenna Fischer has love for every season of 'The Office.' Fischer, who played Pam Beesly across 188 episodes of the classic NBC workplace comedy, revisited all 201 episodes of 'The Office' and documented her journey on her 'Office Ladies' podcast. She finished the series in October, and in a recent conversation on Dana Carvey and David Spade's 'Fly on the Wall' podcast, she shared one of her major takeaways. She explained that there is a consensus that after series frontman Steve Carell exited the show in Season 7, the series took a nose dive in quality. However, upon her rewatch, Fischer found this to be a misconception. 'I think there was this lore, especially among the cast and the creatives, that maybe we hit our peak in Season 3 or Season 4,' Fischer added. 'And also this belief that the two seasons after Steve left, we were just treading water and maybe they weren't as good. But when I watched everything, some of my favorite episodes were in seasons 8 and 9 after Steve had left. There were still these amazing storylines.' She added that her favorite era of the show was 'seasons 4 through 6,' shouting out 'Dinner Party' in Season 4 as a standout episode. Although the original 'Office' ended in May of 2013, Peacock recently unveiled a spinoff series titled 'The Paper.' The official logline for the show reads, 'The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it.' The first image shows the pop star wearing cheetah print pants and a black jacket. "Celebrating the release of Something Beautiful the perfect way," she captioned the post. "Tonight was heaven, surrounded by the ones I love, adorning our ears with beautiful things as we count down to the moment I get to fill yours with this album I adore.
