Suspected honour crime shocks Pindi

A 17-year-old first-year student was allegedly murdered in the name of honour and quietly buried within the limits of Rawalpindi's Jatli Police Station. After the case came to light, the victim's exhumation for a post-mortem has been scheduled for Tuesday (today).
In another case, five suspects, including the victim's brother-in-law, have been sent to Adiala Jail on judicial remand in connection with the murder of a 21-year-old orphan girl who was sexually assaulted, poisoned, and buried.
According to police, on February 4, a DFC officer assigned to security duty at Jatli Police Station filed a report stating that on his patrol at Syed Adda, he received information that 17-year-old student N* had gone missing from her home at 8pm on March 3. Her father and uncle set out to search for her and found her at Syed Adda, after which they took her home. However, the following day, news spread that the girl had passed away and was buried at a local cemetery. Authorities suspect that a family member may have poisoned or suffocated her in the name of honour and buried her to hide the crime.
Based on reports and the DFC's complaint, a daily diary entry was made under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code, and police sought permission for exhumation and post-mortem. The court granted permission for the exhumation, which will take place Tuesday (today). The police and District Headquarters Hospital Rawalpindi have completed the necessary preparations. Officials stated that the post-mortem will help clarify the circumstances of the death.
In a separate case in the Natha Chattar area of Jatli, a 21-year-old orphan girl, living at her brother-in-law's house, was sexually assaulted and murdered before being buried. During the investigation, post-mortem findings revealed that the girl was pregnant, leading to the registration of a murder and concealment of evidence case. Police arrested five individuals, including the girl's brother-in-law, Gulfaraz alias Gullo, her aunt, Gulzar Bibi, her cousin, Anila, a neighbour, Rafiq, and Wajahat, who frequently parked his car near the victim's house. DNA samples from three male suspects were sent to the Forensic Science Agency, and evidence including poison tablets, clothing worn during poisoning, mobile phones, and a stick used for assault were recovered.
Police officials stated that after the investigation and evidence recovery, the suspects were presented in court and sent on judicial remand to jail. Authorities expect the DNA report to arrive in approximately two months.

PHC seeks replies on Kurram unrest
The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has sought responses from the Chief Secretary and the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) regarding a petition highlighting the deteriorating law and order situation in Kurram district. During a hearing on the petition, a bench comprising Justice Arshad Ali and Justice Waqar Ahmad was informed by the petitioner's counsel, Advocate Ali Azim Afridi, that the situation in Kurram remains tense. He stated that peace has yet to be restored in the area and that internet and mobile services are still virtually unavailable. The court noted that despite a previous order seeking a government response, no reply had been submitted. Justice Arshad Ali inquired about which parties had failed to respond. Advocate Afridi informed the court that both the Chief Secretary and the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) had not yet submitted their replies. The court gave the concerned officials 14 days to submit their responses and adjourned further proceedings on the petition. In a separate case, the PHC has issued notices to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council and the Pakistan Bar Council in response to a petition seeking an audit of the K-P Bar Council's funds. The same bench — Justice Syed Arshad Ali and Justice Waqar Ahmad — heard the petition. The petitioner's counsel argued that the audit should be conducted by a chartered accountant, as mandated under Section 18 of the Pakistan Bar Council Act. He also requested that copies of the audit report be provided to all practicing lawyers. The Assistant Attorney General recommended that it would be appropriate to issue notices to both bar councils. Accepting this suggestion, the court issued the notices and adjourned the hearing. Meanwhile, a special Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has issued bailable arrest warrants for three senior officials of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) for failing to comply with court orders. The warrants were issued by ATC Judge Muhammad Iqbal Khan after the officers — AIG CTD, SP CTD, and Inspector Iftikhar Khan — failed to appear in court during proceedings initiated under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). The court noted that despite multiple notices, the three officers failed to produce records in terrorism case No 63. Their repeated non-compliance prompted the court to begin legal proceedings under Section 174 CrPC. Subsequently, bailable arrest warrants were issued, and senior police officials were directed to ensure the officers' appearance at the next hearing. The hearing has been adjourned until June 14. In a separate development, the Peshawar ATC ordered the release of a suspect allegedly linked to a banned organization. The suspect was granted bail following legal arguments presented by his counsel, Advocate Khizar Hayat Khazana. According to the prosecution, the accused, Qari Imran, was arrested by CTD during an operation and was alleged to have promoted the ideology of a proscribed outfit, encouraging others to join. After reviewing the arguments, the court approved his bail request and ordered his release.

Hafizabad gang-rape prime suspect killed in encounter
A key suspect in a gang-rape case was killed in an alleged police encounter near Jorian in the Mangat Uncha area, while three of his accomplices managed to flee, according to officials from the Crime Control Department (CCD). The CCD stated that the operation was conducted based on intelligence reports about the presence of suspects linked to a recent gang-rape incident. During the raid, the suspects reportedly opened fire on law enforcement officers from inside a building. Police retaliated in self-defence, and during the exchange of gunfire, one suspect, identified as Khawar, was fatally shotallegedly by bullets fired by his own accomplices during the crossfire. The remaining three suspects escaped and are currently being sought in an ongoing manhunt. Police sources revealed that Khawar, along with his associates Ikraam Mangat, Laeeq and Chand, had allegedly abducted a husband and wife at gunpoint and subjected them to sexual assault. The suspects reportedly forced the couple to engage in intercourse while filming the incident. The video was later shared online, sparking widespread outrage. The incident prompted swift action from District Police Officer (DPO) Atif Nazir, who ordered an immediate investigation and crackdown on the accused. Authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects and that further legal proceedings will follow. Earlier on Wednesday, the female complainant in a gang-rape case that took place in Mangat Uncha on April 25, recorded her statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code before Civil Judge and Area Magistrate Ali Naqi Tipu, detailing the events involving abduction and assault. Over a month after the incident of gang-rape and forced sexual abuse, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on June 3. The incident involved three armed men who allegedly gang-raped a woman in front of her husband at gunpoint, while one of the suspects recorded the assault on video. The case gained renewed urgency after the explicit footage surfaced on social media.
