Several Manitoba communities under tornado watch

The aftermath of a storm north of Douglas, Man. on Aug. 20, 2025. (Brad Moorehead) A tornado watch is now in place for several Manitoba communities Wednesday afternoon. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the watch is in effect for several communities in the southwest corner of the province, including Virden, Souris, Melita, Minnedosa and Riding Mountain National Park. ADVERTISEMENT 'A low over Montana is bringing moisture and heat over southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba which will give a high potential for tornadoes, significant hail, strong winds and torrential precipitation this evening,' ECCC said in its alert. 'Thunderstorms should start late this afternoon and continue throughout the evening and taper off late this evening.' Tornado watch A map shows the areas of the province currently under a tornado watch on Aug 20, 2025. (CTV News Winnipeg) ECCC said people should be prepared to take cover if threatening weather approaches. If a tornado does happen, people should go into a room inside on the lowest floor, away from windows and walls. If they aren't near home, they should go into a strong building if they can. Other regions in Manitoba, including Dauphin and Roblin, are under a severe thunderstorm watch.

Nova Scotia officials battling out-of-control wildfire — and monitoring hurricane

WEST DALHOUSIE - Scott Tingley with Nova Scotia's Department of Natural Resources says it's rare to be simultaneously monitoring a hurricane while fighting wildfires in the province. The Long Lake wildfire in the Annapolis Valley remains out of control, and is composed of a series of fires that cover roughly 32 square kilometres of land. Meanwhile Hurricane Erin, tracking northward between the Carolinas and Bermuda, is expected to bring strong winds to Nova Scotia by Friday into Saturday — but no rainfall.
