A faculty member at UC Berkeley, teaching as a solopreneur course creator. Also serves as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Alchemist.
Anyone can build a solo venture to turn their skills and interests into income. There's a million-dollar idea in you, waiting to be launched. The key is to activate your profitable niche by living in your zone of genius and monetizing your labor of love.
Today, we'll see real-world inspirations from top-tier business builders. These founders and side hustlers have built revenue lines based on their unique personas, creating cash cows for themselves.
You can do this too.
Launching a venture fund as a solo founder: Ravi Belani
No matter what idea you have, you can bet on yourself. Most people think of solopreneurs as individuals who build small gadgets or productized services, but this is a much bigger topic.
Ravi Belani is the CEO and solo founder of Alchemist Accelerator, an enterprise-facing venture capital firm established in 2012. He is also the teacher of the biggest entrepreneurship class at Stanford. As a venture capitalist, he was the first investor in five unicorns and the second investor in one decacorn (Twitch). When Ravi started out, he was a rookie investor with a big vision – to connect communities, ecosystems, and mentors from diverse industries in order to help business-to-business (B2B) startups win on the global stage.
Whether you're starting a small business or a venture fund, believe in your own potential.
Bootstrapping a $1 million solo venture: Haley McClain Hill
If you have many interests, you can pursue them all. Even if you're a generalist or you haven't found a lucrative specialty, there's a way to connect the dots and make yourself profitable.
Haley McClain Hill is the CEO and solo founder of TORCH Warriorwear (high-end military uniforms for females), which she bootstrapped to +$1 million in revenue, building a loyal fan base of 50,000+ members. She is a Shark Tank winner, a former NFL cheerleader (San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons), and a former Air Force officer. For her side hustles, she has two books and various consulting jobs that keep her actively involved in diverse areas of expertise.
If you manage your time and energy well, you can have your cake and eat it too.
Turning your passion into your profitable niche: Sam Hysell
Find an industry and a customer demographic you truly care about. If it's music, build a business around music. If it's something else, find a way to be of service.
Sam Hysell is the Founding Partner of NOX Media, a marketing agency for music and brands. Their clients include Drake, Avril Lavigne, Louis the Child, Black Coffee, Warner Music, Sony Music, Louis Vuitton, Universal Music, Logic, Edition Hotels, and Coca Cola. He is also a Co-founder of nft now and was previously at VaynerMedia.
Consider your founder-market-fit and founder-problem fit. Where can you make a difference with a genuine passion for the subject material?
Monetizing your founder-problem fit: Alisha Jiwani MD
Play to your strengths, commercialize your niche, and scale your ability to serve more people. Whether you're a full-time founder or a doctor with a day job, you can go solo.
Alisha Jiwani MD MPH CWSP is the CEO and solo founder of Nia Health, a resource for burn-related needs offering emergency services, care subscriptions, kits, and education. She is Harvard educated, a U.S. Army-trained Burn Surgeon, and her venture is 100% bootstrapped.
Revenue is the applause that you get from market success. If you have skills that help people in need, there's always another way to package and sell those skills.
From Solopreneur to global agency: Marti Sanchez
Solopreneur gigs can spin out into bigger ventures.
Marti Sanchez is the CEO and solo founder of Influence Podium, an agency for B2B content marketing and business development. He started as a freelancer and built a company with full-time team members around the world. Marti started as a digital nomad and ghost writer, achieving enough success to scale up into a thriving international business.
Many people are trying to evolve from freelancer to agency. Think about your differentiator and ways to demonstrate your competence to potential customers.
Soloprenuership to build cash flow: Michael Gasiorek
Michael Gasiorek is the CEO and solo founder of Truth Cartel, a Web3 marketing agency. He was the former Editor in Chief of Startup Grind, where he grew the publication to 1 million monthly readers.
Having been a venture-backed startup founder with SOSV, he realized the pros and cons of this path. Instead of building a deck, recruiting a team, and seeking investment, he simply built a book of business as a solopreneur. That's how he started a +$1 million/year global agency with a remote team and automation systems.
Marketing is a crowded space, but Web3 marketing is highly differentiated. As you commercialiez your main skill set, think about specialities where you have a big advantage.

Sony PlayStation's State of Play returns on June 4: Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, and other major updates expected
Sony is hosting a State of Play showcase on Wednesday, June 4 at 5PM ET/2PM PT, featuring updates on upcoming PlayStation 5 games in a 40+ minute livestream on Twitch and YouTube. The presentation promises "news and updates on must-play games coming to PS5" and will highlight "a selection of great games from creators across the globe," according to Sony content communications manager Tim Turi in a PlayStation Blog post. The showcase is expected to feature updates on several highly anticipated titles. Ghost of Yotei , Sucker Punch's PlayStation 5 exclusive sequel launching in October, appears likely to receive significant coverage. Death Stranding 2 : On The Beach from renowned developer Hideo Kojima may also make an appearance. Other potential showcases include Insomniac's Wolverine game and projects from Sony's internal studios including Santa Monica Studio (God of War), Bend Studio (Days Gone), and Guerrilla Games, which is developing a Horizon multiplayer spin-off. Sony-owned Bungie's Marathon could appear, though recent art plagiarism controversies may limit its presence. External partnerships may also feature prominently, with games like Phantom Blade Zero potentially receiving updates. Sony's new PlayStation studio teamLFG, announced last month, might debut details about its live service project. The State of Play joins an exceptionally busy week for gaming, coinciding with the Switch 2 launch and preceding Summer Game Fest on June 6 and Xbox's showcase on June 8. This concentrated schedule reflects the industry's continued adaptation to the post-E3 landscape, where publishers distribute major announcements across multiple independent showcases rather than a single trade show.

Who is Curtis Yarvin? Meet the ‘intellectual source code' of the second Trump administration
Curtis Yarvin, a tech entrepreneur turned political theorist, has emerged as one of the most controversial and influential minds behind the radical ideological shift shaping Donald Trump's second presidency. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Known online by his former pseudonym Mencius Moldbug, Yarvin champions a vision of government that replaces democracy with a CEO-style autocracy. Once confined to obscure blogs, his ideas are now seeping into mainstream conservative politics, embraced by figures close to Trump's inner circle. Yarvin's journey from Silicon Valley coder to anti-democracy philosopher offers insight into the new authoritarian playbook being tested in real time in Washington. Curtis Yarvin's influence on Trump's second term While Yarvin has never held public office, his ideas have penetrated Trump-aligned circles in striking ways. The Trump administration's second-term playbook featuring the purge of career civil servants, erosion of checks and balances, and elevation of loyalist executives bears strong resemblance to Yarvin's vision of streamlined, top-down control. Often described as the 'intellectual source code' of this new governance model, Yarvin has provided the ideological framework for dismantling liberal democratic norms. Figures such as Vice President J.D. Vance have echoed his call to dismantle the so-called 'deep state,' while tech billionaires like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk have embraced Yarvin-esque principles of elite rule, efficiency over democratic process, and corporate-style governance. Musk's expanding influence in areas from space to education has even led some to describe him as an unelected 'czar' — a real-world manifestation of Yarvin's authoritarian, CEO-led state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now From math prodigy to tech dropout Born in 1973 into a liberal, secular family, Curtis Yarvin was raised in Maryland by a diplomat father and a Protestant mother. His paternal grandparents were Jewish-American communists, marking a sharp contrast to the ideology he would later adopt. A child prodigy, he entered Johns Hopkins's Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth and graduated high school by age 15. He studied at Brown University and briefly pursued a PhD in computer science at UC Berkeley before dropping out to join the 1990s tech boom. Immersed in Silicon Valley's libertarian culture, he became increasingly drawn to right-wing philosophy. The birth of a radical ideology Yarvin's intellectual transformation was heavily shaped by libertarian thinkers like Ludwig von Mises and Murray Rothbard, whose distrust of empiricism and belief in rule-by-logic appealed to his analytical mind. In the mid-2000s, writing under the name Mencius Moldbug, Yarvin began articulating a new political philosophy that would become known as the 'neo-reactionary' or 'dark enlightenment' movement. At its core, Yarvin's ideology calls for the abolition of democracy, which he considers corrupt, inefficient, and irredeemable. He proposes replacing it with a CEO-style government led by a singular, powerful executive much like a monarch or corporate boss who rules without elections or opposition. Yarvin also supports a rigid social hierarchy, rejecting the notion of political equality in favour of order, elitism, and stratification. Key concepts: The Cathedral and patchwork rule One of Yarvin's most influential concepts is 'the Cathedral', his term for the network of universities, media, and bureaucracies that he believes enforces liberal ideology and suppresses dissent. According to Yarvin, these institutions maintain cultural dominance in the West and must be overthrown to enable true political reform. Yarvin also advocates for 'patchwork sovereignty', a model in which the world is divided into autonomous, city-sized 'sovereign corporations' (SovCorps). Each one would be run like a business, governed not by public vote but by executive fiat. In this vision, citizens would act as customers rather than voters free to exit but without democratic input or protections. Controversy, criticism, and legacy Yarvin is frequently criticised for promoting 'human biodiversity', a euphemism for race-based intelligence theories. Though he denies being a white nationalist, his work is widely condemned as providing intellectual cover for racist and elitist worldviews. His admiration for authoritarian regimes in China and Rwanda, which he describes as 'efficient,' has raised alarm about his disregard for civil liberties and human rights. Critics argue that Yarvin's work is a pseudo-intellectual justification for totalitarianism, masking authoritarian ambitions in dense, provocative prose. He often uses irony and satire to deflect responsibility for the more extreme interpretations of his writing, but the impact is real: his language, metaphors, and frameworks are now reflected in mainstream policies and talking points on the American right. Why he matters now Curtis Yarvin is no longer a marginal internet theorist. His anti-democratic, elitist vision is shaping real-world policy in one of the world's most powerful democracies. By calling for the destruction of democratic institutions, the elevation of an unelected elite, and the transformation of government into a hierarchical corporate structure, Yarvin has become the intellectual vanguard of a post-democratic future. In the second Trump administration, that future may no longer be hypothetical.
