Malaysia-Maldives partnership poised for growth in trade, digital innovation and sustainability, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — Malaysia is intensifying efforts to strengthen collaboration within Asean and with neighbouring nations such as the Maldives, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said that while Malaysia prioritises closer ties within Asean, it must also extend engagement beyond the region to friendly countries that share common aspirations for development and prosperity.
'In this context, the Maldives represents an important partner. We value not only the longstanding people-to-people ties between Malaysia and Maldives but also see tremendous potential to expand our collaboration in trade, investment, digital innovation, and environmental sustainability,' he said in his keynote address at the Maldives-Malaysia Business Forum 2025 here today.
Also present was Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who was on his first official visit to Malaysia, since becoming President in November 2023, at Anwar's invitation.
Anwar said Malaysia and the Maldives have been longtime friends, sharing familiarity in policies, political systems and strong bilateral ties.
'With the current government leadership in the Maldives, there is now a clear determination to move the country up the ladder with greater policy clarity,' he added.
Earlier, Anwar and Muizzu witnessed the exchange of three memoranda of understanding and two exchange of notes covering various sectors to strengthen cooperation for mutual benefit.
In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with the Maldives increased by 4.3 per cent to US$189 million (RM862.7 million) from US$180.9 million (RM827.3 million) in 2023, making the archipelagic nation Malaysia's sixth-largest trading partner among South Asian countries. — Bernama

China glove makers turn up the heat on Malaysian rivals
WITH China players increasingly deploying overseas capacity to penetrate the US market more effectively, the competitive landscape is turning more aggressive, especially after 2025. 'In our view, a price war is highly likely shaping up an over-supplied gloves market,' said Maybank Investment Bank (MIB) in a recent report. Separately, MIB believes upcoming results could be weak mainly due to weakening USD currency vs MYR. MIB reiterates their negative stance on the Malaysia glove sector. Latest industry sources suggest that competition in the glove sector is set to intensify further, with new capacity from a major China glove maker, expected to come online by the end of 2025. MIB understands that the China glove maker has started marketing to US customers, offering upcoming capacity from its overseas plants in Vietnam and Indonesia at average selling prices of USD16–17/k pcs, versus Malaysia glove makers' current average selling price of USD18–19/k pcs, with deliveries starting from Nov 2025 onwards. Additionally, the company's Indonesia plant is likely to be operational by end-2025 or early 2026, which is earlier than MIB's initial expectation of the second half of 2026. While this may be part of the China glove maker's marketing strategy, pricing could still adjust based on demand, tariffs and counter-moves by Malaysia glove makers. 'The latest news nonetheless reaffirms our negative stance on the sector,' said MIB. Competition is clearly intensifying, with more capacity from China, targeting non-US markets, and its overseas plants, focusing on the US market. Although the actual supply timeline from these overseas plants remain uncertain, any meaningful ramp-up will likely exert pressure on pricing and margins. A price war appears increasingly likely, in MIB's view. That said, a key upside risk to our call would be a shift in US trade policy particularly if the Trump administration finalises higher tariffs on gloves from Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand while maintaining lower tariffs for Malaysia. Such a move would restore Malaysia's cost competitiveness in the US market and partially offset the structural headwinds facing the sector. —June 13, 2025 Main image: Business Times

Pakistan condemns Israeli air strikes on neighbour iran
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan, the only Islamic country with nuclear weapons, 'strongly condemned' on Friday a wave of Israeli strikes on its neighbour Iran. The strikes, which left key military commanders and nuclear scientists dead, stoked fears of a full-blown war in the region and jeopardised US-Iran nuclear talks set for Sunday in Oman. 'Strongly condemn unjustified Israeli attacks on Islamic republic of Iran,' Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar wrote on X. He said Pakistan, which does not recognise Israel, 'stands in solidarity with the Government & the people of Iran'. The foreign ministry later warned the Israeli strikes were 'a serious threat to the peace, security, and stability of the entire region and beyond'. Iran and Pakistan frequently accuse each other of allowing militants to operate from their territory to carry out cross-border attacks. Both countries have conducted deadly strikes inside each other's territory in the border region, which is regularly shaken by violent attacks by Islamist or separatist groups.
