Seaside chippy powered by electric cars as Brits name fish and chips top treat
A fish shop in Kent was powered by two electric vehicles in celebration of National Fish and Chip day.
In honour of National Fish and Chip Day, taking place on the 6th June, the town of Deal, Kent dished out free 300 portions of chips along with a limited supply of battered fish. However, this wasn't your typical chippy. The shop was powered by two electric cars and fronted by TikTok's 'Chip Shop Diva', Destiny Harold.
The Dacia Spring, touted by its manufacturers as the ' cheapest electric vehicle' currently on the market, provided the power for the frying, in collaboration with local chip shop, The Blue Mermaid Fish Bar. It comes after a survey of 2,000 adults revealed that fish and chips is the top treat on a British holiday.
The survey also spotlighted other holiday favourites such as cream tea and hot doughnuts, Mr Whippy ice cream, Cornish pasties and mussels. Classic British foods like fish finger sandwiches, strawberries and cream, and pie and mash also made the list of the top 20 holiday treats.
A spokesperson for car brand Dacia commented: "It was fun treating passers-by today and showing the power of our electric car, Spring, using its vehicle to load technology, which allows you to power external devices off the car's battery.
"It's no surprise we have a national day dedicated to the iconic meal that is fish and chips and the study shows just how much we love it and associate it with holidays by the seaside."
They added: "Playing on the phrase 'cheap as chips' in line with our affordable car and being in the appropriately named Deal, was a great way to celebrate National Fish and Chip Day."
The research revealed that 41% of adults find such foods nostalgic, while 45% feel satisfied after eating them. It also emerged that 44% believe fish and chips is the 'food of the people' and 39% said class doesn't impact how people eat it.
Food psychologist, James Cornish, said: "There are few things that unite the British public quite like fish and chips. Golden, salty, comforting, and steeped in history, this timeless dish is more than a meal - it's a national treasure.
"Loved across generations, social classes, and regions, it's one of those rare things that truly brings us together. There's a certain kind of magic in fish and chips - a simple meal that somehow carries the weight of memory, comfort, and delight.
"Maybe it's because we don't expect too much from humble food, but our delight is excelled through delivering more than we expected."

It also emerged 44 per cent believe fish and chips is the 'food of the people' and 39 per cent said class doesn't impact how people eat it. While 46 per cent feel there is something nostalgic about eating the British staple with a wooden fork, which 33 per cent typically do, although 38 per cent opt to eat it by hand. Government makes driveway law change set to affect millions
No more planning applications are needed for EV charging point installations as the government cuts red tape. Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, announced drivers and businesses will no longer need to submit a planning application to install public or private EV sockets. Ms Greenwood said: "We're cutting down on paperwork to power up the EV revolution, so that drivers, businesses and those looking to make the switch will have more chargepoints to power from, and less red tape to deal with." Vicky Edmonds, chief executive of EVA England, said: "Making it easier to install both public and private charging infrastructure is essential to helping more drivers switch to electric." She warned "further action is needed" as "drivers without driveways still face barriers to affordable, convenient charging".
