Barclays Set to Report Q2 Earnings: Here's What You Should Know

Barclays BCS is slated to announce second-quarter 2025 results tomorrow, before the opening bell. The company's quarterly revenues and earnings are expected to have increased on a year-over-year basis.
In the last reported quarter, an increase in revenues, driven by a solid investment banking (IB) performance, and a strong balance sheet supported the results. However, the company recorded a rise in credit impairment charges and operating expenses.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the company's second-quarter earnings is pegged at 50 cents per share, which has been unchanged in the past seven days. The estimate indicates a rise of 19.1% from the year-ago quarter's reported number.
The consensus estimate for sales is pegged at $9.35 billion, implying 17.2% year-over-year growth.
Major Factors Expected to Impact Barclays' Q2 Results
Investment Banking Revenues: Global mergers and acquisitions were more impressive than previously expected in the second quarter of 2025. Markets plunged in early April after Trump announced sweeping tariffs, rattling business confidence. But as trade demands eased and policy direction became clearer, deal-making activities resumed in the last month of the quarter. Thus, advisory fee growth is likely to have been decent for BCS.
Further, the IPO market saw a resurgence, with a significant increase in both the number of IPOs and the amount of capital raised. This was driven by several factors, including strategic tariff pauses and positive economic data, which resulted in a rebound in market sentiment. Further, global bond issuance volume was decent. Thus, Barclays is expected to have witnessed decent growth in equity and debt underwriting fees.
Hence, growth in IB revenues is likely to have been robust in the to-be-reported quarter.
Trading Revenues: Client activity and market volatility were solid in the second quarter. The continued tariff-related uncertainty drove client activity. Volatility was high in equity markets and other asset classes, including commodities, bonds and foreign exchange.
Given the solid volatility and higher client activity, Barclays' trading business performance is expected to have been robust.
Net Interest Income (NII): In the second quarter, the central banks globally continued to exhibit a mixed approach to interest rate adjustments, similar to the first quarter. This reflected divergent perspectives on the economic outlook, with some central banks prioritizing inflation control while others focused on potential economic downturn. These are likely to have resulted in the stabilization of funding costs for Barclays and a decent rise in loan demand.
Thus, BCS's NII is expected to have improved in the to-be-reported quarter.
Expenses: Barclays' cost-control measures have been leading to improved efficiency and a lower cost-to-income ratio. In the to-be-reported quarter, expenses are expected to have been manageable as business restructuring initiatives offered support.
Barclays' Key Q2 Development
In April, Barclays and Brookfield Asset Management entered a long-term strategic partnership to enhance and transform Barclays' payment acceptance business, which was previously referred to as the merchant acquiring business.
Barclays intends to inject roughly £400 million into the business, the majority of which will be invested in the first three years of the partnership. Brookfield will offer expertise to aid this transformation and will receive a financial incentive tied to the performance of the business.
The move will enable Barclays to realize value from the business over time. After three years of the partnership, Brookfield may buy nearly 70% ownership interest in the business at market value determined at the time of sale.
Upon the sale of the business, Brookfield's initial financial incentive will be converted into an additional 10% stake in the business, increasing the total Brookfield stake to about 80%.
Barclays will continue to keep the ownership interest of approximately 20% and will use the 'Barclaycard Payments' brand. Further, it will act as the sole payment acceptance services provider to Barclays' clients for a minimum of 10 years.

IBN's results were driven by increased net interest income, non-interest income and growth in loans. However, higher operating expenses and declines in deposits and provisions were headwinds.
Deutsche Bank DB reported second-quarter 2025 earnings attributable to its shareholders of €1.49 billion ($1.75 billion) against the loss attributable to its shareholders of $143 million in the year-ago period.
This Germany-based lender reported a profit before tax of €2.4 billion ($2.8 billion), up from $411 million in the year-ago quarter.
DB's results were aided by increased revenues and lower expenses. Lower provision for credit losses was another positive.

Interactive Brokers Expands Forecast Contracts to European Market

Interactive Brokers (Nasdaq: IBKR), an automated global electronic broker, today announced the expansion of Forecast Contracts into Europe. These event-based contracts allow investors to take positions on clearly defined outcomes related to financial, economic and climate indicators. Trading is available nearly 24 hours a day, 6 days a week. Forecast Contracts provide a straightforward way to express a view or manage risk tied to a specific event. Each Forecast Contract is based on a simple yes-or-no question. For example, an investor who believes the US Federal Reserve will raise the Fed Funds Target Rate above 3.875% at the FOMC meeting ending July 30, 2025, can purchase a 'yes' contract. If correct, the contract settles at USD 1.00. If incorrect, it settles at zero. Prices range from USD 0.02 to USD 0.99, reflecting the market's perceived probability of the outcome. 'Investors worldwide are increasingly seeking tools that help them manage event-driven risks with precision and simplicity,' said Milan Galik, Chief Executive Officer at Interactive Brokers. 'By extending access to Forecast Contracts in Europe, we're giving investors more ways to act on their views and manage risk through our comprehensive, global platform.' Investors can trade through IBKR ForecastTrader, a dedicated web-based interface, or other Interactive Brokers platforms. Contracts also pay an interest-like incentive coupon based on the market value of open positions. The incentive accrues daily and is paid monthly. The current annualized rate is 3.83 percent APY. This rate is subject to change and terms apply. Forecast Contracts are available to eligible clients of Interactive Brokers LLC, Interactive Brokers Ireland Limited, Interactive Brokers Canada Inc., and Interactive Brokers Hong Kong Limited. The product is listed by ForecastEx LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Interactive Brokers and a CFTC-regulated Designated Contract Market. Availability may vary by jurisdiction and client eligibility. Foreign Minister Cho Hyun Visits Tokyo Ahead of US Trade Showdown

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya met with his South Korean counterpart Cho Hyun on July 29 in Tokyo, where Cho made a brief stop before heading to the United States for his first diplomatic tour since taking office. Cho's visit to Washington comes as Seoul engages in high-stakes talks over sweeping Trump-era tariffs. In July, President Trump announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Japan and South Korea unless agreements are reached by August 1. Given the rarity of South Korean foreign ministers visiting another capital before a US trip, some observers speculate that Seoul may have sought Tokyo's advice before advancing its trade negotiations. Japan recently struck a deal with Washington to ease its tariff burden. On Tuesday, Iwaya welcomed Cho's decision to make Japan his first stop since assuming office. "We appreciate the close communication between the governments of Japan and South Korea, including today's meeting, since the inauguration of the Lee Jae-myung administration," Iwaya said. "In the current strategic environment, the importance of Japan–South Korea relations and cooperation between Japan, the US, and South Korea is growing," he added. "Our two countries must work closely together on a range of issues, including those related to the Indo-Pacific region." Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho hold a 50-minute bilateral meeting in Tokyo on July 29. (©MOFA Japan) Cho, who was sworn in just last week, said the newly minted Lee administration is committed to strengthening ties through a pragmatic foreign policy. "The international situation is challenging," Cho said. "But I believe that by cooperating and maintaining close communication with friendly nations to co-develop strategies, we can overcome crises and turn them into opportunities." He also relayed President Lee's push to restore shuttle diplomacy following the first summit between the two East Asian neighbors. During the meeting, the two ministers also agreed that coordination among Japan, South Korea, and the US is essential for regional peace and stability. Seoul's latest diplomatic engagement comes amid rising concern over the Lee administration's perceived tilt toward China. While former President Yoon Suk-yeol had prioritized deepening ties with like-minded partners, Lee and his ruling party's seemingly pro-Beijing leanings have unsettled policymakers in Washington. Foreign Minister Cho Hyun holds his first phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on July 28, exchanging views on bilateral ties and other key issues. (©MOFA ROK) Some experts view Cho's visit to Tokyo as a subtle signal that the new government remains committed to preserving the framework built under the previous administration. Lee has also reportedly decided not to attend China's Victory Day ceremony in September. According to diplomatic sources, the president ultimately opted out, citing the need to prioritize the relationship with the US. After a short interlude, Cho departed for a scheduled meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss, among other issues, Trump tariffs. Tokyo's recent agreement with Washington, under which the US lowers tariffs on Japanese imports from 25% to 15% in exchange for Japan's long-term investment commitments and expanded access to its domestic market, has increased pressure on Seoul to secure a comparable outcome. Trump's trade negotiators are expected to seek similar concessions, possibly using the Japan deal as a benchmark. With that agreement now shaping expectations, Seoul faces difficult choices about what to concede and what to protect in key sectors such as agriculture, digital trade, and automobiles.
