Adams Jr. throws three TDs, Stampeders continue dominance with 41-20 win over Bombers
Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. completed 16 of 24 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Stampeders to a 41-20 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Calgary improved to 5-1 and sits alone atop the CFL's West Division. Winnipeg dropped to 3-2 before a sold-out crowd of 32,343 at Princess Auto Stadium, an eighth straight full house.
Vernon completed TD throws of 37 and 42 yards to Damien Alford before finding Dominique Rhymes with a three-yard toss.
Calgary's defence also picked off Winnipeg's quarterbacks four times, with Damon Webb intercepting a Chris Streveler pass and returning it 15 yards for a touchdown. The convert gave the Stamps a 38-13 lead early in the fourth quarter.
It was the second time the Stamps stomped Winnipeg in the last three weeks. They beat the Bombers 37-16 in Calgary three weeks ago.
Backup quarterback Quincy Vaughn also scored on a one-yard touchdown run.
Rene Parades kicked field goals of 32 and 37 yards, and converted all seven majors.
Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros exited in the second quarter with what's believed to be a concussion after falling to the field from a hit.
He completed eight of 11 passes for 151 yards and a four-yard touchdown to Nic Demski, with two interceptions, before Streveler took over.
Streveler completed 15 of 24 passes for 128 yards and one late eight-yard touchdown to Kody Case, with two picks. Sergio Castillo kicked field goals of 46 and 58 yards and converted both TDs.
Calgary had upped the score to 31-13 when Adams completed a one-yard TD toss to Rhymes early in the fourth quarter.
After Adrian Greene picked off a Streveler pass near his own end zone to snuff out a promising Bombers drive, the Stamps marched down the field and Adams hit a wide-open Alford for a 42-yard touchdown. The Parades convert gave Calgary a 24-13 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Stamps led 17-13 at halftime.
Calgary had retaken the lead when Adams connected on a 37-yard touchdown pass to Alford.
Winnipeg grabbed a 13-10 lead when Collaros capped off a 70-yard drive with a four-yard TD toss to Demski.
The Stamps upped the score to 10-6 with a 32-yard field goal by Parades early in the second.
Castillo had connected on a 58-yard field goal to pull Winnipeg within 7-6 following Calgary's touchdown.
The Stamps had scored on their first drive, marching 70 yards on seven plays, capped off with a one-yard touchdown run by Vaughn. A Parades convert gave the Stamps a 7-3 lead.
The Bombers opened the scoring on their first possession. After a sack negated a promising drive, Castillo booted a 46-yard field goal.

Maltos' late go-ahead field goal lifts Alouettes to 23-21 win over Stampeders
CALGARY – Jose Maltos received a hero's welcome from his teammates after kicking the longest field goal of his CFL career. Maltos booted the go-ahead 58-yard field goal with 1:10 remaining as the Montreal Alouettes (5-2) earned a 23-21 win over the Calgary Stampeders (5-2) in front of 19,863 fans at McMahon Stadium on Thursday. When the Mexican-born kicker returned to his team's locker room, he was mauled by his teammates who congratulated him while chanting: 'Olé, Olé, Olé, Olé.' 'It feels good – important game, important kick,' said Maltos, whose previous longest kick was from 53 yards out. 'My teammates are great. I love them and I'm grateful to have them on my side. 'We're happy because we need these kind of wins. Every kick is important to me, so that was pretty good.' Following his heroics – which included four other field goals, a convert and a single – Maltos received praise from Montreal head coach Jason Maas. 'He's made some clutch kicks for us since he's taken over and he's got an outstanding percentage career-wise already,' Maas said. 'He just has a good knack for those types of moments and that's what he's shown us. That was a tremendous (game-winning) kick. It was one of the best kicks I've seen.' Montreal quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson completed 30-of-40 passes for 280 yards to go with one touchdown to Chris Spieker and one interception. 'Man, we needed that one,' Bethel-Thompson said. 'It feels great to finally play my role for this team. It's a special locker room. What coach Maas has built is a special place and I'm just so grateful to have done my job. That was an unbelievable kick at the end by Jose.' Dedrick Mills had a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Stampeders (5-2), who had won their previous three games. 'We ran the ball well for three quarters, but not the fourth quarter,' said Calgary coach Dave Dickenson. 'And that's when you need to run the ball … and we just didn't do it.' Calgary quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. threw a touchdown pass to Dominique Rhymes and also completed a short pass to Erik Brooks in the end zone for a two-point convert after Mills' second rushing score. Near the end of the third quarter, Adams scrambled out of the pocket and ran for a seven-yard gain before he was hit hard by Montreal linebacker Tyrice Beverette. Although he got to his feet and walked to the sidelines, he was assessed for a head injury and didn't return to the game. 'I'm expecting it was on the one hit.' Dickenson said. 'I'm not really going to speculate on what happened, but I know that he went in the tent and didn't come back, so that was obviously something that we know can happen. 'A lot of teams are playing with their backup QB, including Montreal, so we have to be able to function and get points and get first downs, and we weren't able to do it.' Defensive back Adrian Green picked off an errant pass by Bethel-Thompson for his league-leading fourth interception of the season and ran it back to Montreal's 44-yard line to help set up Calgary's first touchdown. Four plays later, Mills ran for a seven-yard touchdown with 1:53 remaining in the first quarter, which gave Calgary a 6-0 lead after a missed convert by Rene Paredes. After Tyler Snead's 42-yard diving catch put Montreal at Calgary's nine-yard line, the Stampeders held the Alouettes to a 10-yard Maltos field goal. Adams then engineered a five-play, 77-yard drive that he finished off by tossing a 33-yard TD pass to Rhymes at 5:10 of the second quarter to put the Stamps up 13-3. The Als responded at 9:18 when Spieker caught a seven-yard TD pass from Bethel-Thompson to cap off a quick eight-play, 77-yard drive. On the ensuing kickoff, Maltos booted an 88-yard single to pull the Als within two points of the Stamps. Maltos finished off the first half by making a 36-yard field goal with no time left on the clock to put Montreal ahead 14-13. The Stamps drove the ball 65 yards down the field before Mills ran in for a nine-yard score on the sixth play of the drive at 3:43 of the third quarter. A successful two-point convert gave the Stamps a 21-14 edge. Thanks to a pair of field goals by Maltos in the fourth quarter – a 28-yard kick at 6:22 and another from 20 yards out at 12:17 – Montreal cut Calgary's lead to just 21-20. 5 Takeaways as tired-looking Calgary Stampeders fall to Montreal Alouettes on late 58-yard field goal
It looked another winning week for the Calgary Stampeders … Article content Another K.O. of a contender for the Canadian Football League belt. Article content Article content But after handling everything the three-down circuit has thrown at them, it didn't go their way Thursday night in a 23-21 loss to the Montreal Alouettes at McMahon Stadium. Article content Despite two touchdowns and a pile of yards from running back Dedrick Mills and a gutsy effort amid a bunch of games in a short period of time, the host Stampeders were dropped by the 2023 Grey Cup champions, who have been championship calibre for the past few CFL campaigns. Article content Article content 'Effort was good on our end,' said Stampeders GM/head coach Dave Dickenson. 'We had the lead most of the game. It was a hard-fought game. I think both teams were digging deep on their roster. Article content Article content 'We kind of ran out of some people there, and we were trying to adjust. And I just didn't think we played winning football. We took too many penalties, and obviously, ball security (was a problem), as well. We had our chances — we just didn't get the job done.' Article content It didn't help that Stamps QB Vernon Adams Jr. was ineffective for long stretches of the game and then was lost to them for the fourth quarter, when he was sidelined presumably by a CFL spotter for a concussion check. Article content Article content Article content The end result kept the Stamps from climbing into top spot all by themselves in the CFL. Instead, the 5-2 record matches them with the Alouettes and leaves them behind the first-place 5-1 Saskatchewan Roughriders. Article content Article content 'Hard-fought game — we knew it was going to be a hard-fought battle,' said Stampeders receiver Dominique Rhymes. '(Maltos) made a 58-yarder. Hats off to them. That's a great team. It was a battle. It was what we expected.'

‘We're hoping that we can turn the tide soon'
It's been the same story with Valour FC since their inception in 2019. They consistently lose and have never come close to even sniffing contender status. Sure, along the way, they'll show the odd flash here and there that maybe — just maybe — they're capable of turning things around, but they haven't yet, and there are zero signs that this will finally be the year that they do. The club has lost five straight Canadian Premier League matches heading into Friday's road tilt against Vancouver FC (1-5-9), at 9 p.m. CT, in what is a battle of the basement dwellers as both sides have a pitiful eight points at the midway point of the season. JOHN WOODS / FREE PRESS Calvary FC celebrate Sergio Camargo's goal against Valour's Raphael Ohin (right) on Sunday. The loss was Winnipeg's fifth straight. 'I think the guys are in a good place. I mean, we keep building, and we keep working on our plan for the next game, and we're hoping that we can turn the tide soon,' said midfielder Kianz Froese. Valour supporters have heard that one before. Winnipeg's pro soccer club sits at 2-2-10 which is the worst start the team has ever had through their opening 14 matches. They've also been outscored 16-4 on their current losing streak. Vancouver had seen enough and sacked manager Afshin Ghotbi earlier this week. If Valour doesn't figure it out soon, head coach and general manager Phillip Dos Santos will likely be next. Dos Santos was asked by the Free Press on Thursday whether or not he's been assured that he will finish the season with the team. Dos Santos, who took over from Rob Gale in 2021, does not have a contract beyond 2025. 'I think that it's a legit question that you ask. It's the professional world of football. I'm a guy who always stays in my responsibilities. Assurance in football, to use the word assured, never,' responded Dos Santos. 'This is something when you sign up, you can't come in and say, 'I'm assured of what tomorrow is going to look like.' It's just not what we sign up for. And that maybe brings the adrenaline and a little fire. But I'll tell you this, I'm not one who worries too much about my future because I'm a person that lives strongly by faith, and I believe that the one who holds it all together has been taking care of me for years now and he'll continue to keep doing it, and that's all I can say about that.' Out of all CPL teams that have been in the league since Day 1, Valour boasts the worst all-time record at 45-35-81 in wins, draws and losses. Their latest defeat came last Sunday at home where they coughed up a goal in the 93rd minute to allow Cavalry FC to escape with a 2-1 victory. It was a game-winner that would even be unacceptable by rec league standards, as Valour left Cavalry midfielder Sergio Camargo all alone in the box for what has to be the easiest goal of his pro career. York United FC (6-3-6) currently holds the fifth and final playoff spot with 21 points. 'It's these micro moments that are making us go from winning a match or drawing and getting points that allow you to build for the next one, and losing,' said Dos Santos. RUTH BONNEVILLE / FREE PRESS FILES Winnipeg Valour head coach and general manager Phillip Dos Santos said Thursday that 'micro moments' are often costing the club the game. 'There are moments in games that you cannot replicate. You can't replicate in training what happened at the end of the last game. You have to keep working with the guys, and you need to find a balance between holding the guys accountable, but staying positive with them because, the truth is, there's nobody that wants to win more than the group that works together every day.' It would make a world of difference if Valour had a legitimate striker, but they don't. The past two years they trusted their attack with CPL veteran Shaan Hundal, but with nine goals in 35 matches, the 26-year-old from Brampton, Ont., wasn't the answer. Valour shipped him off to York earlier this week in an uninspiring swap for 21-year-old Markiyan Voytsekhovskyy, a Toronto product who was born in Ukraine and has three goals in 23 career games. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Valour has found the back of the net just 13 times this summer. Defender Kelsey Egwu leads the team with three goals. 'It's never just one player. I think that it's a collective and that's the way we need to look at it,' said Dos Santos. 'We need to find the solutions internally.' Valour returns home July 29 for another showdown against Cavalry (7-4-3). Taylor AllenReporter Taylor Allen is a sports reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press.
