Defensive linemen in Calgary Stampeders camp: 'Game-wreckers' wanted
Article content 'And then on the edges, you've got to be a full-time player … but you've got to be able to stop the run and then get after the quarterback.' Article content With 18 d-line hopefuls still in camp Wednesday, Dickenson and his staff have plenty of talent — and options — on hand. Article content Beyond Orimolade on the edge, returnee Clarence Hicks has been a standout during camp. As have fellow Americans Cedric Wilcots II and Shaun Peterson Jr., who earned two QB sacks in last Saturday's 31-4 pre-season victory over the visiting Edmonton Elks at McMahon. Article content Of the big American fellas inside, returnee Josiah Coatney, fourth-year CFLer Miles Brown and Jaylon Hutchings — who signed with the Stamps last October — are all turning heads. Article content Article content Then there's the Canadians in the mix — returnees Kail Dava, Kelon Thomas, Ryan Leder, Justin Sambu and Anthony Federico, 2024 draft-picks George Idoko and Jason Janvier-Messier and 2025 draftee — and Calgarian — Max von Muehldorfer. Article content Article content 'I think we have a lot of talent,' added Orimolade. 'I think there's a lot of guys that are still like budding, but I think number one, I think we're going to defend the run really well, and that's going to put us in a lot of opportunities to give guys behind the sticks. It makes it easier for d-line to get to the quarterback.' Article content The ending Article content So far, it stacks up as Orimolade, Brown, Hutchings and Hicks from edge to edge. Article content But with so many talents in the mix and Dickenson declaring jobs up for grabs, that could change overnight. Article content Plus Canadians starting on the d-line amounts to being ratio-breakers. Article content No matter, though … just as long as whoever's got those gigs are game-wreckers. Article content 'It's a hungrier group,' added Orimolade, when asked about the difference between the Stamps before he left and this year's edition. 'When you've had bad seasons, no one wants that taste in their mouth. They wanted the season to be over just because of all the losing, and it starts to weigh on you mentally. Article content Article content 'But now it's like everyone has the drive to be better this year. That's a big change. That was kind of missing. You get kind of complacent, and now you have the rejuvenation. It's good.' Article content Short yardage Article content The Stampeders have released American WR Ishmael Hyman, who appeared in five regular-season games for the Red and White in 2024 and made 18 catches for 220 yards and one touchdown … The Stamps signed global K Jordan Noyes, a native of Gravesend, England, who recently concluded his NCAA career with the Colorado State Rams. In two seasons with the Rams, he converted 29-of-39 field-goal attempts and added 62 converts for a total of 149 points. He also averaged 64.6 yards on 16 kickoffs. In a 2024 game at Nevada, Noyes connected on a 60-yard field goal. Noyes started his NCAA career with 30 games over three seasons with the Utah Utes. He was 8-of-12 on field goals for the Utes, a perfect 45-for-45 on converts and accounted for 79 points. He averaged 61.9 yards on 145 kickoffs … The Stamps placed rookie American FB Ryan Jones on the retired list after he underwent surgery for a broken leg suffered during the Red and White pre-season victory over the host BC Lions on Vancouver Island on Victoria Day … Stamps training camp continues Thursday at McMahon (9:15 a.m.). Article content Article content Strong performances? Check. Article content Article content A desired result? Double check. Article content The Elks didn't offer much in the way of starters — 40 rookies peppered the visiting team's roster — but it still makes for a feel-good start for a franchise in need of it this season. Article content And with that the Stampeders are off to the regular season — with a monster break between now and their first game Saturday, June 7 against the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats at McMahon (5 p.m., CHQR 770 AM/107.3 FM the Edge, TSN). Article content Here are five takeaways from the Stamps win in Langford, B.C. … Article content Fans at McMahon got their first look at Vernon Adams Jr., and the much-heralded quarterback acquired in the off-season strutted his wares. Article content Article content Points were scored on all three drives Adams engineered — a couple of touchdowns on QB sneaks by fellow pivot Logan Bonner and a 52-yard field-goal bombed by veteran kicker René Paredes. Article content After that, it was P.J. Walker's chance to show his wares at quarterback for the Stampeders. And he marched the club downfield on a handful of drives, hooking up with receiver Daylen Baldwin on a 13-yard TD on a third-and-long gamble in the fourth quarter. Article content Josh Love mopped up at QB for the Stamps.

Advertising watchdog upholds complaint against An Post for 'misleading' digital stamps ad
THE ADVERTISING STANDARDS Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint against An Post for an advertisement deemed to be 'misleading'. The advertising watchdog published its complaints bulletin in which six complaints out of seven were upheld due to the promotion of misleading content. The An Post ad in question was disseminated by direct mail and related to a recent campaign by the national postal operator which promoted its new digital stamps as alternatives to traditional physical stamps. A complainant issued a claim to the ASA of misleading information against the advertised statement: 'Send anytime, to anywhere using An Post Digital Stamps'. This was considered to be inaccurate as the digital stamps themselves expire six months after purchase, meaning consumers were not assure usage at 'any time' if their six months had passed. Advertisement Another statement made in the ad that 'Post now has no limits' was disputed by the complainant, considering the six-month expiry issue places a clear limit on their rollout, as opposed to traditional paper stamps. The ASA also upheld a complaint made against supermarket chain Aldi on the grounds of misleading information and concern about environmental impacts. An ad promoting Burn and Glow Lignite Coal, which featured claims like 'they're also virtually smokeless and an environmentally friendly option', was 'unsubstantiated and false', the ASA said. The claim that the product is 'environmentally friendly' was struck down, with the complainant pointing out the deleterious effect of fossil fuels on the environment by increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere when burned. Further to this, the complainant cited information from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in expressing concern that fossil fuel burning could be advertised as an efficient way to heat a home when even 'smokeless fuels' are capable of emitting particulate matter which damages human breathing. Other advertisers identified as having published misleading information include US real estate franchise Keller Williams, air conditioner manufacturer Daikin, BEO Wellness and Skinbae & Beyond Co. Running backs in Calgary Stampeders camp: Dedrick Mills eyes 1,000 yards
Dedrick Mills has improved his rush numbers year after year with the Calgary Stampeders. Article content Article content It was 459 yards in his rookie year with the Canadian Football League club. Article content Then came 802 in 2023. Article content And last year, with the starting gig pretty much to himself, the rumbling running back rolled up an impressive 923 for the Stampeders. Article content So you know what he's thinking for 2025. Article content 'That 1,000 goal is most definitely in my head,' admitted Mills to reporters, during Week 1 of Stamps training camp at McMahon Stadium. 'I mean … I ain't gonna set too many high goals, but I'm just taking one game at a time and just go out and play the game that I know how to play and just be the guy for my team.' Article content Article content Heading into camp, Mills was definitely the guy for this team at running back. Article content Article content In the last two off-seasons, he's seen backfield mates Ka'Deem Carey — a long-time starter with the Stamps — and Peyton Logan respectively move on to the Toronto Argonauts and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, leaving Mills as the undisputed incumbent for the Calgary crew. Article content But there is new competition in camp with free-agent Americans, a talented local and a draftee now in the mix in the Red and White running game. Article content And that mix will be explored more during Monday's first pre-season game against the host BC Lions in Langford, B.C. (2 p.m., CHQR 107.3 FM/770 AM). Article content 'Running backs is the hardest one to really evaluate in camp when it's not a game situation, because we really don't want to bring them to the ground,' said Stamps GM/head coach Dave Dickenson, of practising without tackling in training camp. Article content 'I think we've got a good group, though — they're doing a good job in their protection schemes,' added Dickenson. 'We have six guys — probably that's too many — so we'll certainly have to take a look at that.' Article content Article content THE PLAYERS Article content Article content 13 Ludovick Choquette 5'9, 206 lb. 23 Long Island 20 Jeshrun Antwi 5'11, 207 lb. 27 Calgary 23 William Langlais 6'3, 226 lb. 35 Sherbrooke 26 Dedrick Mills * 5'9, 217 lb. 28 Nebraska 28 Tiyon Evans * 5'11, 210 lb. 23 Louisville 33 Eno Benjamin * 5'9, 207 lb. 26 Arizona State 49 Ryan Jones * 6'2, 235 lb. 25 East Carolina * — denotes American* Article content It seems Mills, 28, should be a lock to be the starting guy. Article content His year-over-year improvement lends to that, of course. Article content And the Georgia native's not shying away from the competition in camp. Article content 'I mean … it helps me a lot, man,' said Mills, with a big grin. 'It helps me to come out here every day and prepare myself just for the game. I mean … just seeing other guys step up and do the right things and just everybody on top of their game right now is just making it hard for everybody.
