Norway on Tuesday launched a flagship
carbon capture and storage
(CCS) project, a technology seen as crucial to curbing climate change but struggling to find a viable economic model.
Bearing the English name for the Vikings' wooden ships, the
Longship project
involves capturing carbon dioxide emitted from a cement plant and later from an incineration plant, transporting it by ship to a terminal on Norway's west coast, and then injecting and storing it beneath the seabed.
The project has received significant financial support from the Norwegian state, which will cover 22 billion kroner ($2.2 billion) of the total estimated cost of 34 billion kroner for the installation and operation over the first 10 years.
Norway has presented Longship as the "world's first full-scale value chain" for capture and storage of carbon in the greenhouse gases that cause harmful climate change.

"This is not just an important moment for Norway, it is a breakthrough for carbon capture and storage in Europe," Norwegian Energy Minister Terje Aasland said.
For the capture component, the facility will be officially inaugurated Wednesday at a cement plant operated by Germany's
Heidelberg Materials
in Brevik, southeastern Norway.
It will prevent 400,000 tonnes of CO2 from escaping into the atmosphere each year.
Another part of the project, the Hafslund Celsio waste incineration plant near Oslo, is also expected to capture 350,000 tonnes of CO2 starting in 2029.
The liquefied carbon dioxide will be transported by ship to the Oygarden terminal near Bergen, where it will be injected into a pipeline to be stored 110 kilometres (68 miles) offshore in a saline aquifer 2.6 kilometres below the seabed.
The terminal has been in place since last year as part of the
Northern Lights project
-- led by oil giants Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies -- which claims to be "the world's first commercial CO2 transport and storage service".
Backed by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a way of reducing the carbon footprint of industries hard to decarbonise, such as cement and steel,
CCS technology
remains complex and expensive.
Without financial assistance, it is currently more profitable for industries to purchase "pollution permits" on the European carbon market than to pay for capturing, transporting and storing their CO2.
The total global carbon capture capacity currently amounts to only about 50 million tonnes, according to the International Energy Agency, equivalent to just 0.1 per cent of global annual emissions.

Toy company challenges Trump tariffs at US Supreme Court; claims misuse of emergency powers; seeks urgent ruling
This is a representative AI image An Illinois-based toy maker, Learning Resources Inc., has taken its tariff battle to the US Supreme Court, urging the justices to swiftly rule on the legality of former President Donald Trump's trade tariffs. In legal documents, the company emphasised the urgency, citing "the tariffs' massive impact on virtually every business and consumer across the Nation, and the unremitting whiplash caused by the unfettered tariffing power the President claims." The company contends that Trump overstepped his authority by using an emergency powers law to impose tariffs without congressional approval. It filed the appeal in a bid to bypass ongoing proceedings in lower courts. Despite securing an initial lower court victory, the ruling remains suspended whilst an appeals court evaluates a similar decision that more broadly challenges Trump's tariffs. Currently, Trump maintains authority to collect tariffs under emergency powers legislation, with arguments scheduled for late July. The Supreme Court traditionally avoids cases before appeals courts reach decisions, reducing the likelihood of granting the expedited hearing requested by the company. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트, 지금 시작하세요 [자세히 보기] 임플란트 더 알아보기 Undo Learning Resources CEO Rick Woldenberg highlighted the current impact of tariffs and uncertainty, particularly concerning the approaching back-to-school and holiday periods, which typically generate their highest annual sales. "All the people that are raising their prices are doing it with a sense of dread," Woldenberg told The Associated Press. But, "we do not have a choice. We absolutely do not have a choice," he added. The company's legal representatives proposed scheduling arguments for late summer or early autumn. The Trump administration's defence maintains that emergency powers legislation authorises presidential control over imports during national emergencies, considering the persistent trade deficit as such an emergency. Trump presents tariffs as mechanisms to encourage domestic manufacturing, generate Treasury revenue, and negotiate more advantageous international trade agreements. Woldenberg described investing substantial resources into diversifying his company's supply chain, whilst acknowledging the process as lengthy and unpredictable. "I think that our case raises uniquely important questions that this administration won't accept unless the Supreme Court rules on them," he said. Cachar bizman held for Rs 25cr GST evasion through fake ITC claims
Silchar: State GST department's Silchar unit has arrested a Cachar-based businessman for allegedly evading goods and services tax (GST) to the tune of Rs 25 crore through fake billing and fraudulent input tax credit (ITC) claims. The accused, Ishak Ahmed, listed as the director of Khushi Digital Payment Private Limited, was arrested following a raid at his business premises in Pailapool, Cachar. The raid was carried out based on inputs received from the department's Guwahati headquarters. Officials on Tuesday said documents and computers were seized during the operation. Ahmed, a resident of Alipur in the district, was taken into custody after he failed to produce valid documents for business transactions estimated to be worth Rs 100 crore. "We had specific inputs that Rs 15 crore worth of fake ITC was availed, and Rs 10 crore was passed on to other states — amounting to a total tax evasion of Rs 25 crore," said Ronit Roy, assistant commissioner of state tax on Tuesday. "Under Section 69 of the CGST Act, 2017, we are empowered to arrest individuals involved in evasion above Rs 5 crore," he added. Roy said Ahmed was summoned to produce receipts and transaction-related documents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "We deferred the hearing twice. On June 14, during the second hearing, he submitted documents that appeared forged. He claimed that a chartered accountant based in Delhi held the original papers and requested two more days, but even after three days, he failed to submit them," Roy told the media. Officials also found discrepancies in the company's directorship. While Ahmed claimed that ownership had changed hands last year, one of the listed directors denied involvement and has lodged a police complaint against him, alleging misuse of identity. Manjit Kumar Borah, joint commissioner of state tax, confirmed the arrest, saying "Following legal procedures, he was arrested and produced before the court. He has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. This is one of the major cases of GST fraud in the region through fake ITC claims." Sources in the department said that more arrests may follow as the investigation progresses, indicating that Ahmed may be part of a larger network involved in tax fraud.
