Complacency and overconfidence cost Revolution a win in Kansas City, and Caleb Porter hopes it's a lesson

Boston Globe26-05-2025

As for complacency and overconfidence, Porter said he warned against both at halftime. But as much as those traits are despised by coaches, they come with the territory when a team hasn't lost in the league in seven weeks (4-0-3).

'Our level in the first half was as good as it gets,' Porter said, 'and if we play like that, I don't think there's a team that can beat us.'
He planned to bring his team down to earth by showing 'what went wrong there in the first 15 minutes' of the second half. That might be all it takes to prepare them for visits to D.C. United on Wednesday and CF Montreal on Saturday.

This breakdown wasn't just a matter of sleepwalking, though. SKC (3-8-4, 13 points) also capitalized on vulnerabilities against the press and defending shots from distance. In the second half, coach Kerry Zavagnin said his team 'went higher … to press the ball, and we turned them over in dangerous areas.'
Zavagnin added that
'I think that contributed to it,' Zavagnin said, 'but I say it to you like I did the players: you can make all the tactical adjustments you want. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. But without the will and the determination, it's useless.'
Zavagnin's lineup flaws also contributed to SKC's poor start, which served to lull the Revolution into a false sense of security. Three substitutes out of halftime, led by captain Eric Thommy, helped change the dynamic.
The first two SKC goals resulted from attempts from just outside the penalty area — Daniel Salloi
Garcia made it 3-2 off a counterattack, with a deflection off Brayan Ceballos past Ivacic in the 61st minute.
By then, Porter's players realized they should have listened to him at halftime, but what about tactical adjustments? Should Porter have matched Zavagnin's changes? Tweaked how the Revolution played out against the press?
Maybe, but it is up to the players to read the game. That starts with Ivacic, who usually makes the right call with the initial pass against the press. If the opponent is pressing extra high, Ivacic and the back-liners will look to go long. This time, though, the problems included not reading the situation and becoming too predictable. The result was Yusuf being caught in possession.
As Zavagnin said, SKC had to make plays to cause the turnovers, and his halftime admonitions — along with the inspiration of the recent death of
New England's Ilay Feingold wore a shirt before Saturday's match paying tribute to late Sporting Kansas City player Gadi Kinda, a fellow Israeli national team player.
New England Revolution
As for being vulnerable to tries from just outside the penalty area, the Revolution might have closed down more effectively, but those areas are difficult to defend. In fact, they're about the same places SKC left open for late attempts by Matt Polster (whose try in the 73rd failed to test goalkeeper John Pulskamp) and Yusuf.
Not to be overlooked is the Revolution's ability to threaten on dead ball situations. Bye's missed header off a corner kick followed sustained pressure on the right wing. Two other sequences — accounting for both times New England put the ball in the net after halftime — began far from goal.
After Yusuf drew a 76th-minute foul, the Revolution took a short free kick. Luis Diaz crossed with Ignatius Ganago and central defender Wyatt Omsberg making near- and far-post runs, respectively. Omsberg redirected past Pulskamp, but the shot went in off a sliding Ganago, and was nullified. Rarely will a central defender make a back-post run in that situation, but there was Omsberg, taking on the role of a withdrawn forward and seeming to catch SKC off guard.

Urruti, meanwhile, converted after a quick throw-in from the Revolution's half to Yusuf, who found Diaz on the right wing. SKC had plenty of time to retreat into defense, but could not keep up with the speed of the throw-in, Yusuf's accuracy, and Diaz's pace.
By then, there seemed no doubt the Revolution had their swag back.
'I'm hoping that it's a pivotal moment for our group to really evolve into a team that, instead of being a team that is good for periods, a team that's consistently good and drives games like we did that first half,' Porter said. 'Drives it for 90 minutes, not 45.
'This group can play at a very high level. That's why I believe in this team, I believe in the players. I believe that we have a shot this year to do big things, to accomplish our goals. But for me, it's the mentality. It's not the confidence; this group is very confident. It's the consistency, and at times the lack of sustained aggressiveness. This group, when they get overconfident, they get complacent, and that's what we need to change and correct. Hopefully, we can correct it, because if we correct it, we're going to be a team that I think is going to be very difficult to beat and has a real chance to achieve our goals.'

Quillan Salkilld vs. Yanal Ashmouz prediction, odds, pick for UFC 316

The post Quillan Salkilld vs. Yanal Ashmouz prediction, odds, pick for UFC 316 appeared first on ClutchPoints. UFC 316: Merab Dvalishvili versus Sean O'Malley 2 continues on the prelims with a fight between Quillan Salkilld and Yanal Ashmouz in the lightweight division. Check out our UFC odds series for our Salkilld-Ashmouz prediction and pick. Advertisement Quillan Salkilld (8-1) burst onto the UFC scene with an 18-second knockout of Anshul Jubli at UFC 312, showcasing his explosive power. Prior to that, Salkilld earned a unanimous decision win over Gauge Young on Dana White's Contender Series, proving he can go the distance and control the action. Now, he looks to do one better and continue his hot streak when he steps inside the Octagon to take on Yanal Ashmouz this weekend at UFC 316. Yanal Ashmouz (8-1) rebounded from his first career loss with a dominant, unanimous decision win over Trevor Peek at UFC Vegas 97, using relentless wrestling and control. Previously, Ashmouz suffered a decision loss to Chris Duncan after a stunning 75-second knockout of Sam Patterson in his UFC debut. Ashmouz will be looking to extend his winning streak to two wins in a row when he takes on the surging Quillan Salkilld at UFC 316. Here are the UFC 316 Odds, courtesy of DraftKings. UFC 316 Odds: Quillan Salkilld-Yanal Ashmouz Odds Quillan Salkilld: -550 Advertisement Yanal Ashmouz: +410 Over 2.5 rounds: -180 Under 2.5 rounds: +140 *Watch sports LIVE with fuboTV (Get Access | Save $30)* Why Quillan Salkilld Will Win Last Fight: (W) Anshul Jubli – KO/TKO R1 Last 5: 5-0 Finishes: 6 (3 KO/TKO/3 SUB) Quillan Salkilld enters UFC 316 with significant momentum and a skillset that poses major problems for Yanal Ashmouz. Salkilld's explosive UFC debut, an 18-second knockout of Anshul Jubli, showcased his fight-ending power and sharp striking, while his previous decision win on Dana White's Contender Series proved he can maintain composure and control over three rounds. With a six-inch reach advantage, superior height, and a striking rate nearly double that of Ashmouz, Salkilld is primed to dictate the range and tempo of the fight. His 100% takedown defense and black belt in jiu-jitsu further insulate him against Ashmouz's wrestling-heavy approach, making it difficult for the Israeli fighter to impose his preferred game plan. Advertisement Ashmouz is a compact powerhouse who relies on pressure and wrestling, but Salkilld's physical development and relentless training under coach Romel Luistro have elevated his all-around game. Salkilld's team believes he holds the edge in every facet, on the feet, in grappling, and physically. If Salkilld keeps the fight standing and leverages his reach, he can pick Ashmouz apart and potentially secure another highlight-reel finish. Expect Salkilld's athleticism, technical sharpness, and finishing instincts to be the difference as he continues his rise in the lightweight division. Why Yanal Ashmouz Will Win Last Fight: (W) Trevor Peek – DEC Last 5: 4-1 Finishes: 6 (4 KO/TKO/2 SUB) Yanal Ashmouz is well-positioned to secure a victory over Quillan Salkilld at UFC 316 thanks to his well-rounded skill set and proven ability to adapt under pressure. Ashmouz, who boasts four knockout wins and two submissions, recently rebounded from his first career loss with a dominant decision over Trevor Peek, showcasing his relentless wrestling, top control, and ability to grind out tough opponents. Advertisement His explosive bursts, heavy overhands, and willingness to mix up striking with takedowns make him a constant threat, especially against fighters who rely heavily on reach and distance. Ashmouz's experience in overcoming adversity, returning from a long layoff and fighting multiple times in the UFC, underscores his resilience and fight IQ. While Salkilld is a dangerous striker with an impressive debut, Ashmouz's balanced approach and strong grappling could be the difference. If Ashmouz can close the distance, neutralize Salkilld's reach, and impose his wrestling, he can wear down the Australian prospect and control the fight on the mat. With a background as an IBJJL champion and a history of grinding out wins against aggressive opponents, Ashmouz is poised to drag Salkilld into deep waters, where his pressure and ground-and-pound can secure a decision or late stoppage victory. Final Quillan Salkilld-Yanal Ashmouz Prediction & Pick Quillan Salkilld vs. Yanal Ashmouz at UFC 316 shapes up as a classic striker-versus-grappler matchup with high stakes for both lightweights. Salkilld enters as a significant favorite, riding an eight-fight win streak and coming off a spectacular 19-second knockout in his UFC debut. Advertisement Ashmouz, however, is no stranger to adversity. He rebounded from his first career loss with a dominant decision win over Trevor Peek, utilizing smart fight IQ, relentless wrestling, and top control to neutralize his opponent. While Ashmouz is giving up size and power, his experience and ability to adapt could make this a closer contest than the odds suggest. If he can weather Salkilld's early storm and drag the fight into deeper waters, his grappling could become a factor. Expect Salkilld to keep the fight standing, use his reach, and land heavy shots for a knockout win to extend his winning streak. Jessica: What can we expect from the NBA's 'most overrated player,' Tyrese Haliburton, versus MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander? Ben: Expect a fun, fast-paced brand of basketball. Both superstars play with speed — Haliburton as a playmaker and SGA as a scorer. SGA is also backed by a great defense, especially at the point of attack, which could mean all the difference when two of the NBA's best guards face off. Ben: The Pacers won championships in the ABA in the 1970s, and the Thunder won a title as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1979, but neither has worn the NBA crown for its home city. Either way, it'll be an achievement for small markets, which so rarely win in this league. These are underdog stories. Ben: Haliburton has led not one, not two, but three of the most improbable playoff comebacks I have ever seen — one in each series. Indiana's 14-point comeback in the last three minutes of the Eastern Conference finals' Game 1, including a game-tying shot at the end of regulation, paved their Finals path. Mariah May Breaks Silence On Shocking WWE Debut

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. "The Glamour" Mariah May made her official WWE debut. She did so with a surprise appearance on the June 3, 2025, episode of NXT. This marked her first appearance for a major promotion since her contract with All Elite Wrestling expired at the beginning of June. May's last high-profile match in AEW was at the Revolution pay-per-view in March 2025. There, Toni Storm defeated her in a memorable "Hollywood Ending" fight to win back the AEW Women's World Championship. Following that, May had been active on social media, indicating she was on vacation. This now appears to have been a clever misdirection before her NXT arrival. She has reportedly signed a multi-year WWE contract. Previous reports suggested WWE was very keen to bring her in and that the plan for some time was for her to start in NXT. Aug. 25, 2024 – Mariah May holds the AEW Women's World Championship high after defeating Toni Storm at AEW All In London 2024. Aug. 25, 2024 – Mariah May holds the AEW Women's World Championship high after defeating Toni Storm at AEW All In London 2024. Lee South/AEW During her unannounced NXT debut segment on June 3rd, it was noteworthy that WWE announcers never mentioned May by name. This has led to speculation about whether WWE intends to repackage her or assign her a new ring name, a common practice for new signees, despite "Mariah May" being her established and believed ring name. Following her appearance, May also spoke in a digital exclusive released by WWE, where she stated, according to those who viewed it, "She is now home." This is a major get for WWE as she is extremely talented and hasn't even reached her peak. She has wanted to go to WWE for some time now, but the company wasn't interested in her. However, that all changed thanks to her tenure in AEW. More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation May first made a name for herself on the UK independent scene before a highly successful tenure in Japan with STARDOM. She joined AEW in late 2023, initially as the protégée of "Timeless" Toni Storm. Their storyline evolved into a heated rivalry after May won the 2024 Women's Owen Hart Foundation Tournament and defeated Storm for the AEW Women's World Championship at All In 2024 at Wembley Stadium. It will be interesting to see whether WWE gets her on the Great American Bash card next month in Atlanta, which will go head-to-head with AEW All In: Texas.
